Die Großen Karlsteine nördlich von Osnabrück gehören zu den bekanntesten Megalithanlagen Niedersachsens. Ihr Name leitet sich von einer Legende ab, wonach Karl der Große ein göttliches Wunder an den Steinen vollbrachte. Karl spaltete einen der gewaltigen Decksteine mit einer Peitsche, nachdem der heidnische Sachsenfürst Widukind ein göttliches Zeichen verlangte. Der Ruf des Megalithgrabes wird durch den hervorragenden Erhaltungszustand und die monumentale Wirkung, die durch seine Lage an einem steilen Hang in einem Laubwald verstärkt wird, getragen. Spätestens seit dem 17. Jahrhundert waren die Karlsteine ein beliebtes Motiv in Literatur und bildender Kunst.
Im Gegensatz zu allen anderen Anlagen in der Weser-Ems-Region sind die Karlsteine nicht aus eiszeitlichen Findlingen (Gneis oder Granit) erbaut worden. Man bediente sich vielmehr des Sandsteinvorkommens am nahen Piesberg. Die Grabkammer ist mit 8,5 x 3 m nicht übermäßig groß, doch sind die verwendeten Steine umso eindrucksvoller. Der größte Deckstein misst 3,70 x 2,20 x 0,80 m. Trag- und Decksteine sind nahezu vollständig erhalten. Frühe aber schlecht dokumentierte Ausgrabungen brachten einige Funde zum Vorschein.
Nur weniger Meter südöstlich der Großen Karlsteine liegen die Kleinen Karlsteine, eine ungleich bescheidenere und sehr stark zerstörte Grabanlage. Auch sie bestand aus Piesberger Sandstein. Die Grabkammer besaß ursprünglich vier Joche.

The Großen (great) Karlsteine north of Osnabrück are among the most well-known megalithic graves in lower Saxony. Their name derives from a legend whereupon Charlemagne worked wonders on the stones. Charlemagne split one of the enormous capstones in half with his whip, after the pagan Saxon duke Widukind had asked for a divine revelation. The excellent state of preservation and the immense impression, increased due to the grave’s position at a steep slope in deciduous forest have established the reputation of this megalithic grave. As early as the 17th century the Karlsteine were a popular motif in literary work and fine arts.

They were made of sandstone from the nearby Piesberg quarry. The grave chamber is not exceedingly big, only 8.5 x 3 metres, but the stones used are all the more impressive. The biggest capstone is 3.7 x 2.2 x 0.8 metres. Orthostats and capstones are almost completely preserved. Early but poorly documented excavations came up with some findings.
Just a couple of metres south-east to the Großen Karlsteine are the Kleinen (small) Karlsteine. This grave is contrastingly modest and very much damaged. But it was also built of Piesberg sandstone. The grave chamber originally had four bays.

In der ersten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts errichtete die Aachener Bürgerschaft unter Leitung ihres amtierenden Bürgermeisters Gerhard Chorus (1285–1367) als Zeichen ihrer bürgerlichen Freiheit ein neues Rathaus. Bis dahin hatte das Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts errichtete Grashaus als Rathaus gedient. Als Zugeständnis an die römisch-deutschen Könige musste die Bürgerschaft sich allerdings verpflichten, im neuen Rathaus einen Saal für das festliche Krönungsmahl (im Anschluss an die Königskrönungen im Aachener Dom) einzurichten. Mit dem Bau wurde 1330 begonnen, wobei das Gebäude auf den Grundmauern eines verfallenen Palastbaus aus der Karolingerzeit, der Aula regia der Kaiserpfalz, errichtet wurde.
Der aus der Zeit Karls des Großen stammende Granusturm wurde übernommen und um 14 Meter aufgestockt. Auch in der Rathaussüdseite sind noch Teile des aufgehenden karolingischen Mauerwerkes vorhanden.[1] Die Fertigstellung erfolgte 1349. Bis zum Jahr 1531 fanden im so genannten Krönungssaal die Festessen anlässlich der Aachener Königskrönungen statt. Während das Rathaus als Verwaltungsgebäude und Festhaus für die Reichsfeiern diente, wurden im Granusturm Urkunden und ein Teil der städtischen Waffen und Munition untergebracht. Der Turm diente außerdem zeitweilig als Gefängnis.
Das gotische Rathaus von Aachen gilt als architektonisches Vorbild zahlreicher Rathausbauten im flämischen Raum dieser Zeit.

Aachen Town Hall (German: "Rathaus") is a landmark of cultural significance located in the Altstadt of Aachen, Germany. It was built in the Gothic architecture style in the first half of the 14th century.
Aachen Town Hall was built in the first half of the 14th century under the leadership of the mayor Gerhard Chorus (1285 – 1367). The new hall also hosted the traditional coronation feast that was part of the coronation ceremony of the Holy Roman Empire. Before that, the coronation was held at the nearby mid-13th century Grashaus which is one of the city’s oldest still-standing buildings nowadays. Construction began in 1330 on top of the foundation walls of the Aula Regia, part of the derelict Palace of Aachen, built during the Carolingian dynasty. Dating from the time of Charlemagne, the Granus Tower and masonry from that era were incorporated into the south side of the building.[1] The structure was completed in 1349, and while the town hall served as the administrative center of the city, part of the city’s munitions and weaponry was housed in the Granus Tower, which also served as a prison for some time.

Parma besitzt eine der größten Taufkapellen der Welt aus dem 12./13. Jahrhundert. Reich mit Fresken und vielfältigen Skulpturen ausgeschmückt, steht in ihrer Mitte auch ein großes Becken, in dem im Mittelalter noch Ganzkörpertaufen von Erwachsenen vollzogen wurden.

This day was all about freight transport at the RTM. Various steam and diesel locomotives drove freight trams or passenger trams with freight wagons. The weather was excellent and the trams were again magnificent.

Ferdinand haut Zeichen in die Tasten,
bald erscheinen sie in seinem Kasten.
Ferdinand gibt bald dem Bild Gestalt,
das er malt, der Kreis erhält Gehalt.
Ferdinand plant sorgsam alle Zeichen,
schleudert rundweg in den Lösungsweg,
was er weiß, und sei es etwas schräg.
Bald schon ist ihm eines gegenwärtig:
nur noch wenig, danach ist er fertig.
Als er dann auf sein Ergebnis schaut,
scheint es ihm, es wäre ihm vertraut.
Er entdeckt am Schlusse seiner Reise:
Das ist ein Quadrat aus einem Kreise.
