The canted winglet of the MD-11 is a contemporary of the winglets used on the 747-400 and the A330/A340 which all sprang from NASA aerodynamicist Richard Whitcomb's work in the 1970s and 1980s. But the MD-11 was alone in that group of large commercial transports in adopting a lower winglet as well. Whitcomb's work did show that a downward winglet with the upper winglet offered further drag reductions. Boeing and Airbus felt the drag reductions offered with a lower winglet were offset by an increased risk of damage to the lower winglet by ground vehicles or heavy crosswind landings. McDonnell Douglas, however, wanted to exact as much performance as possible in the MD-11 and reduced the lower winglet size as a compromise. The bigger 213-foot supercritical wing planned for the MD-11 follow on, the MD-XX, had an even larger winglet with a bigger lower winglet.

Air New Zealand 767-300 with winglets

Early evening departure from Chieng Mai Airport (CNX) heading back home in Bangkok. As seen from the picture, we were banking left as the sun shined from the west, illuminating both two engines and winglet. We was going to arrive in Bangkok as Thai Airways 115, B747-400, in an hour.

Winglet touched by late afternoon sun captured from the last row of economy class cabin. Nice cloud formation over the Gulf of Tonkin can be spotted in the background. On board Thai Airways B747-400 flying from Bangkok to Hong Kong.

Getting kinda dirty after flying only 3 hours so far...

This Thomas Cook/Condor 767 is the only one I have ever seen with winglets. Dave in the tower got some photos of this bird on a previous occasion but it still looks a bit odd to me. Anyway, here she is on the roll on 26L at CYVR.

From the plaque below the blended winglet exhibit:

The Future Is On The Wing

This Blended Winglet was test flown on a Boeing 747-200 in 2000 to prove the viability of Blended Winglets for big transport aircraft.

Blended Winglets are gracefully curved wingtip extensions that measurably enhances the aerodynamic efficiencies, flight characteristics and environmental benefits of corporate and commercial aircraft.

Aviation Partners of Seattle introduced the patented Blended Winglets in 1991. They are now flying on airliners and corporate jets worldwide saving fuel and protecting the environment.

The Museum of Flight is grateful to Aviation Partners, Inc. and Aviation Partners Boeing for their enormous contribution to the world of flight and aerospace.

Delta Boeing 737-700 Winglets

while taxiing to the gate we passed this delta airbus on a parallel taxiway. at a quick glance the winglet from our B737 creates the illusion that it could be the tail of the delta airbus. madness!
