These winglets keep a lot of wind off the rider

Winglet originally installed in 2000 on a Boeing 747, to evaluate the viability of winglets in large transport aircraft. Now on display by the Museum of Flight street entrance.

Functional artwork at the Museum of Flight, located south of downtown of Seattle, Washington. I visited this place on August 25, 2017.

From the plaque below the blended winglet exhibit:

The Future Is On The Wing

This Blended Winglet was test flown on a Boeing 747-200 in 2000 to prove the viability of Blended Winglets for big transport aircraft.

Blended Winglets are gracefully curved wingtip extensions that measurably enhances the aerodynamic efficiencies, flight characteristics and environmental benefits of corporate and commercial aircraft.

Aviation Partners of Seattle introduced the patented Blended Winglets in 1991. They are now flying on airliners and corporate jets worldwide saving fuel and protecting the environment.

The Museum of Flight is grateful to Aviation Partners, Inc. and Aviation Partners Boeing for their

enormous contribution to the world of flight and aerospace.

Wingtip of a Saudia 777 ER. Many modern airliners feature winglets to decrease drag and increase lift, the Boeing 777 ER does not. The raked wingtip of the 777 ER does much the same thing as a winglet, without the designers having to worry about flutter problems that can occur with winglets.

Wing tip and winglet of a KLM 737-800 plane on its way from Stavanger to Amsterdam (KL1204). View towards the east. Another KLM plane is cruising alongside. This could be the flight coming from Kristiansand or perhaps Oslo. Both planes are avoiding the congested Danish airspace on a friday afternoon by flying over the North Sea in Scottish airspace. A few minutes later the two planes crossed eachother.

I deliberately 'placed' the winglet at the bottom of the picture, because I wanted the blueness to be the main part of this photo.
