I determined the winglets on each side of the saucer shuttle bay doors were offline, they should lap over the edge of the strongback part and into the secondary hull. They were too wide too and needed to be more tapered so I carved, filed, and sanded the cured Apoxy Sculpt then added some more AVES, pulling and blending with fingers and sculpting tools to form an unbroken curve around the spinal plate atop the secondary hull.

They use the winglet 767s mostly for the Asia and South Pacific runs.

Fog in SFO had the plane circling for quite a while. We ran low on fuel, loaded up in SJC and landed in SFO. Funny, just as we reached altitude, the captain called for flight attendants to prepare for landing. Shortest flight I've ever been on.
When all was said and done, we were in the terminal 2 hours later than our scheduled arrival time.
For the 1-year anniversary of Winglet Wednesday we feature a great de-icing pic. It is dedicated to all the hard working people on the ramp who keep your planes going through the harsh winter months.
The Alaska Airmen's Trade Show is an annual event held the first weekend of May at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. It's a pretty cool event - a lot of static displays and cool things for sale for a state that relies heavily on aviation. We lucked out and had a very nice day for it. These photos are from the show held in May 2010.

The canted winglet of the MD-11 is a contemporary of the winglets used on the 747-400 and the A330/A340 which all sprang from NASA aerodynamicist Richard Whitcomb's work in the 1970s and 1980s. But the MD-11 was alone in that group of large commercial transports in adopting a lower winglet as well. Whitcomb's work did show that a downward winglet with the upper winglet offered further drag reductions. Boeing and Airbus felt the drag reductions offered with a lower winglet were offset by an increased risk of damage to the lower winglet by ground vehicles or heavy crosswind landings. McDonnell Douglas, however, wanted to exact as much performance as possible in the MD-11 and reduced the lower winglet size as a compromise. The bigger 213-foot supercritical wing planned for the MD-11 follow on, the MD-XX, had an even larger winglet with a bigger lower winglet.
