Waiting for a flight from Schiphol last Wedneday evening, and the nice weather tempted me up to the observation platform.

My love of planes and "things in a row" was just too much for me ;)

Now back home, and currently trying to recover a 2GB card full of photos from the weekend that I deleted by mistake - a r s e.

Hoping that SanDisk "RescuePRO" lives up to its name ...

[Update - Tuesday evening]

The clever software did it's stuff - nearly all of the photos recovered from the card - phew !

Late on a Winglet Wednesday, almost a Throwback Thursday so here's a photo from an 18 Feb 2017 flight in the clouds.

On April 3, 2014, I saw this KLM Boeing 747-400 on final approach to runway 25L at LAX minus the port side winglet. I wonder how often these winglets are lost mid-flight, and whether there are any problems flying in this condition?

McDonnell-Douglas winglet for the DC-10 and MD-11 increases aerodynamic efficiency by reducing lift drag at the wing tip. The winglet lowers fuel consumption by 3 percent, saving an average of a quarter of a million gallons per year on a typical MD-11 aircraft. Developed in 1981.

Our aircraft for our flight from Oklahoma City to Chicago-O'hare.

Today really was a day pretty much about travel. We travelled into the city to buy some stuff and then travelled to the airport, then travelled to another airport.

Yes, it was the return journey from Helsinki to Liverpool via Amsterdam. We were a bit nervous as the connection in Schiphol was a little tight. Fortunately we made it, but sadly our luggage didn't.

The bags aren't lost, it's just that the time was too short and the airport too big. The irony of course is that the plane they came off and the plane they had to go back on to were probably less then 400m apart on the apron, but of course it doesn't work that way!

It's no problem - I just pick the bags up tomorrow from Liverpool as it's pretty close to work and that will be quicker and easier than waiting for a courier.

The photo is the winglet at the tip of the port wing of our KLM Embraer 190, PH-EZG, somewhere over northern Europe at about six miles up.

I've possibly got more interesting photos from today (which I'll post, I'm sure) but this best serves what the day was about.

Hats off to KLM for two good flights. Shame about the luggage, but hey - it happens. :)

I believe I can fly

I believe I can touch the sky

I think about it every night and day

Spread my wings and fly away

I believe I can soar

I see me running through that open door

I believe I can fly, I believe I can fly

I believe I can fly...

Boeing 767 ER with WINGLETS in LAN AIRLINE

Standard Winglets.

This aircraft was delivered to ORIX Aviation and leased to TUIfly Germany as D-ATUI with standard winglets in Feb-11. The standard winglets were replaced with 'Split Scimitar' winglets in May-14. It was repainted in the 'Robinson Club' logojet livery in Dec-15. TUIfly became TUI Airlines Germany in Oct-17. The aircraft was transferred to TUI Airways UK as G.-.T.U.K.N. in Feb-21. It was ferried to Bristol, UK in Mar-21 for storage due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic. Stored, updated 30-Apr-21.

Note: The registration D-ATUI has been used twice previously on Boeing 737-800's. By Hapag-Lloyd on c/n 30287/1308 between Apr-03/Oct-05 and by TUIfly on c/n 34690/2184 between Feb-07/Apr-08

This "NG" 737 features the Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) split-scimitar winglets. The split-scimitar design appears to derive from APB's retrofit winglet design for Classic and NG 737s, with a modified upper tip and the second, downward pointing, airfoil.

Boeing's own 737 MAX has a straight-edged split winglet design with both the upward and downward airfoils closer to horizontal. Instead of APB's nearly vertical upper fin. Boeing's 737 solution is more like the 747-400, or Embraer 175's, slanted wingtip
