This is a visual journal I'm making as I work through the book "Your Heart's Desire" by Sonia Choquette. I've decided to work differently than I usually do--I'm "prepping" the pages before I do the journaling instead of doing it all at the same time.

03/28/2014 - 9 years ago, a boy equally aged found his interest in anime and manga. He quickly learned Japanese from evening school and watching Japanese shows. He even started to blog in Japanese! Two years later he started playing the guitar, and quickly found a talent for that too. Today his name is making headlines around the world (including CNN and Yahoo, as well as the German TV station RTL), Japanese guitar magazines have given him a lot of attention for his guitar skills, and he is fully endorsed by Japanese guitar brand ESP.

He has been in countless TV shows. He has even been hosted by the famous lunch TV-show "Waratte Ittomo" which has over 10 million regular viewers in Japan. He has also appeared in many major national Japanese TV shows, and Universal Japan is making huge marketing campaigns for him.

When he was 16 years old, his solo debut mini album ‘REACH the SKY’ was released in Japan with by Universal Japan, closely followed by a debut full album in Japanese released in the summer of 2013. Today he is 18 years old, dresses in the classic lolita style, and performs the Visual-Kei (visual style) genre.

He also tours around the country and plays fully booked shows in Sweden where he is from. He has gotten the Gold Award for his debut album, the Platinum Award for his single "Heartbreak Hotel", and his debut album in Sweden landed on 1st place on the Album chart, while the DVD of his Swedish tour got the 1st place on the Swedish DVD chart! He placed second in the Swedish Eurovision Song Contest Final last year (only after the jury placed him second, the viewers’ votes put him miles ahead of second place!).

We are talking about none other than the famous YOHIO! This year he made it to the finals of the Swedish Eurovision Song Contest once again and he will be playing a concert Friday night at J-Popcon 2014 for his Danish convention fans! He will be singing his songs in Japanese, as well as his newest hit single "To the End

Figure 8.1 - The Triple Analogy. Illustration by Alfred Gell (1999), “The Language of the Forest,” reprinted in The Art of Anthropology.

Great Diagrams in the History of Anthropology: Iconism, Ecologism, and the Wild Man (Savage Minds)

Great Diagrams in Anthropology, Linguistics, and Social Theory

Savage Minds:

..From Gell’s essay, “The Language of the Forest,” which relates phonological iconism to the ‘auditory culture’ and sylvan mode of being of Umeda people in New Guinea. I quote at length:

Phonological iconism [...] depends on tracing connections between the sound-substance of individual words and morphemes and their meanings. As a culturally elaborated expressive mode it is probably quite rare, if only because the regular processes of sound-shift which all languages undergo would ensure, other things being equal, that phonologically iconic forms evolved into non-iconic ones after a lapse of time. Only where things are not equal, that is, where there are specific cultural vectors tending to preserve, generalize and intensify expressivity against the countervailing forces of morphological change, should one expect to encounter elaborate phonological iconism as opposed to sporadic onomatopoeia.

From Gell's original text (Gell 1999 at 242):

“One can indeed imagine the Umeda world/landscape as a series of articulatory gestures, syllabic shapes moulded within the oral tract (microcosm) and the macrocosm consisting of the body, social relationships mediated through the body, and other natural forms, particularly trees, and the encompassing physical ambiance” (242).

“In the New Guinea forest habitat [dense, unbroken jungle]… hearing is relatively dominant (over vision) as the sensory modality for coding the environment as a whole… Umeda, and languages like Umeda, are phonologically iconic, because they evoke a reality which is itself ‘heard’ and imagined in the auditory code, whereas languages like English are non-iconic because they evoke a reality which is ‘seen’ and imagined in the visual code” (247-8).

“Even vicarious participation in alterity is subversive of the conceptual restrictions which motivate our own sense of the real, and, by derivation, our conceptions of the poetic” (257).
