When I reached the last line of dunes on this windy afternoon I observed something new. About a half dozen crows or ravens were frolicking in the updrafts over the dunes.
Superb fliers, the crows could easily have flapped their way up and into the winds. But what fun would that be?
Instead, as seen here, the crows were waiting for just the right gust to lift them into the air and sweep them away. They were patient. They had to be, since not just any gust would do.
What I wasn't able to capture was the sight of the crows, now airborne, skimming over the dunes like cruise missiles on their way to a target.
Now, there may be some dry, sociobiological explanation for this afternoon of aerobatics, but I prefer to think that crows just want to have fun!
This type of walking transporter was used in spaceports across the galactic disc. They were common sight and often loaded with palettes of light cargo, such as fuel canisters.

New imagery from the Hubble Space Telescope is revealing details never before seen on Jupiter. Hubble’s new Jupiter maps were used to create this Ultra HD animation.
These new maps and spinning globes of Jupiter were made from observations performed with NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. They are the first products to come from a program to study the solar system’s outer planets – Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune and, later, Saturn – each year using Hubble. The observations are designed to capture a broad range of features, including winds, clouds, storms and atmospheric chemistry. These annual studies will help current and future scientists see how these giant worlds change over time.
Scientists at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the University of California at Berkeley produced two global maps of Jupiter from the observations, which were made using Hubble’s high-performance Wide Field Camera 3.
The two maps represent nearly back-to-back rotations of the planet, making it possible to determine the speeds of Jupiter’s winds. Already, the images have revealed a rare wave just north of the planet’s equator and a unique filament-like feature in the core of the Great Red Spot that had not been seen previously.
In addition, the new images confirm that the Great Red Spot continues to shrink and become more circular, as it has been doing for years. The long axis of this characteristic storm is about 150 miles (240 kilometers) shorter now than it was in 2014. Recently, the storm had been shrinking at a faster-than-usual rate, but the latest change is consistent with the long-term trend.

Cacti bloom once a year for only one or two days and I was lucky to be there and document his 3.5 hour event. Following morning flower did not open any more
I watched an awesome thunderstorm that occurred east of the Anza-Borrego Desert. Shot this from the "Hollywood & Vine" area which is near the where Vallecito Creek Road and Arroyo Hueso intersect. The old street sign went missing about a year and a half or so ago. This time-lapse is made from 482 frames shot at f/4.5 6 sec ISO 1000 from 12:17 AM - 12:44 AM on August 21, 2016 with my Canon 6D and Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens. A mostly-full moon illuminates the sand, cholla, ocotillo, and other desert scenery in the foreground. I didn't add an audio track to this video as it was a calm and silent night in the desert which I shot this sequence (the storm was too far away to hear any thunder).

A magnetic filament of solar material erupted on the sun in late September, breaking the quiet conditions in a spectacular fashion. The 200,000 mile long filament ripped through the sun's atmosphere, the corona, leaving behind what looks like a canyon of fire. The glowing canyon traces the channel where magnetic fields held the filament aloft before the explosion. Visualizers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. combined two days of satellite data to create a short movie of this gigantic event on the sun.
In reality, the sun is not made of fire, but of something called plasma: particles so hot that their electrons have boiled off, creating a charged gas that is interwoven with magnetic fields.
These images were captured on Sept. 29-30, 2013, by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, which constantly observes the sun in a variety of wavelengths.
