This train is named after the Nilgiri (Tamil / Hindi / Sanskrit: English - (Nil - Blue; giri - Mountain)) Hills. The train is primarily intended for travellers to these hills, especially to the towns of Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri. Mettupalayam is near Coimbatore, which is at the foot of these hills, and the Nilgiri Express links to the Nilagiri passenger train operated by the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) at Mettupalayam station, enabling passengers to complete the journey to Udagamandalam by rail.
This train had a dark blue colored rake distinctly spottable from other trains till 1997/98 when all the other train shad Maroon/brick colored coaches.When the rake color of the other train changed for conversion to Vacuum brakes even this train got the same color as the other trains.
The train is hauled by a WAP electric locomotive from Chennai Central to Coimbatore Junction. At Coimbatore, there is a loco reversal. Since the 38km long Coimbatore-Mettupalayam stretch is not electrified, hence a WDM diesel locomotive is used to pull the train in this section in both directions.

A friend and I came across this former Eastern Counties timetable case affixed to the interior of a North Norfolk Bus Shelter some time ago, but as we were riding on a bus at the time I could not get a shot of it. Although the stop is still served on a daily basis by Sanders it has been many years since ECOC passed this way. This one is unusual, for although the glass has gone the removable frame is still in place, although the additional pieces of wood on either side are not original.
The Norfolk County Council timetable case situated opposite the Telephone Box in Ingworth is out of date, but much of the displayed information is still correct. Dated to commence from 5th September 2010 it gives details of Sanders service 18 with two journeys each way per day from Monday to Saturday, although a couple of the Saturday timings are slightly different to those used from Monday to Friday. Today, the current service 18 timetable continues to offer the same level of service, but due to changes introduced since 2010 all of the timings are now incorrect as apart from one later running journey the remainder run a few minutes earlier than shown. Nice to see that someone has tried to clean off the moss/mildew.
Returning home via Birmingham Moor Street Station after a weekend in Nottingham.
Journey out was to have been on the Shakespeare line, but got a taxi instead to New Street (after all the signal problems during week).

Although commendably an up-to-date timetable, it is of no particular use to passengers since it does not actually show the times of the (two per week) services that actually call at the station.
