Waiting for my train
She was there in middle of the crowd. Looking with attention the timetable. Many people were waiting there, trying to be confortable.
Library of Birmingham, Birmingham
Big thanks to everyone that made it to Birmingham yesterday, especially those that couldn't make the full day but came to show their faces briefly for coffee and lunch - really appreciate the effort from everyone all round.
Naturally, I have to lead with this one or else Eddie will kill me for making him hang around for the extra couple of hours and besides, I think he might have eclipsed me with some of his fountain shots.
It's always good meeting up with some familiar faces as well as the new... hope you enjoyed the day out David and Simon and I hope we all meet again. Personally, I enjoy the social meetup more than the photography, but this time the relaxed, non-existent timetable and route march made it all the more enjoyable - it's the future!
Thanks to Mark for suggesting the Digbeth shoot, I enjoyed that more than my planned library night shoot and I'm sure Eddie got a lot out of it as well judging by his shutter clicks.
Mullingar’s Semi derelict west yard. Opened in 1851 as part of the former MGWR mainline route to Galway, the Mullingar - Athlone section of route has not been used since 1997. Rationalistion by GSR singled the mainline to Galway in 1928, while the diversion of Galway and Mayo trains via Portdarlington in 1973 reduced traffic considerably. The few timetabled trains remaining ceased in 1987. In recent years the line past the yard and turntable has been lifted and turned into the midland greenway between Mulling & Athlone.

In December 1996, winter storms hammered Northern California. When the clouds cleared, both the Shasta Route and the Feather River Canyon were out of service due to flood damage. The only rail line open between the Northwest and Northern California was the Modoc Line. Unneeded by new owner Union Pacific, the Modoc was pending abandonment.
However, for a couple of glorious weeks, the Modoc Line hosted detours while the damaged rail lines were repaired. For those fortunate enough to be out in Lassen and Modoc counties while the trains were running, it was a literal turkey shoot. Trains were dispatched in fleets of five or six at a time in one direction, running around 20 mph. Once the fleet reached the end of the line, a similar fleet in the opposite direction would be ready to go.
Here is a southbound (timetable eastbound) detour train near Horse Lake, California, descending the grade from Crest siding. This Kodachrome was exposed on January 12, 1997. Just a few days after this, the detours ended. Less than six months later, at the end of June, the last through trains on the Modoc Line were run.
After laying fallow for several years, these tracks would finally be dismantled in 2003. Today, this is a fine trail that you can drive in your SUV.
Teasing your hair is A) painful, and B) nearly impossible to brush out.
This is inspired by America's Next Top Model...don't hate. The photography on that show is awesome!
88006 and 68016 rest in the transfer yards at Bridgwater Nuclear Fuel depot. In truth it is all low grade waste awaiting processing at Sellafield. It seems a little bizarre to see the nuclear flasks amongst the suburban sprawl of Bridgwater. The empties arrived late on this day, the 6V74 from Crewe was due to arrive at 0643 but was just over an hour late requiring a VAR entry into the timetable for the return trip due to depart at 1408 but actually departed almost an hour early at 1317.,

The middle section of the famous Clock Tower in St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco) in Venice, Italy.
Hulleys' summer service X71 returned for its 2021 helping on 17 April, operating this year as an out-and-back between Sheffield and Alton Towers on Saturdays and Sundays. Last year saw the same level of service on Saturdays, with an increased timetable on Sundays when the dead mileage from/to Alton Towers was operated in service to/from Bakewell, with the Sunday Bakewell to Chesterfield service also running as an X71. Eight days after the X71 was reintroduced, Hulleys placed a brand new MCV Evora-bodied Volvo B8RLE into service, this being the company's first new vehicle since Enviro 200 17 in March 2011. The vehicle carries the plate Y100HOB to mark Hulleys' centenary which passed on 29 April, and on similar lines has taken the fleet number 21 from the Enviro 400 which has been renumbered 3.
Putting two-and-two together, the Evora worked the outward leg of the X71 this morning, and is seen here on the climb out of Onecote, around 15 minutes from Alton Towers. This part of the Peak District, located at the southern tip of the national park, is probably the most attractive part in my mind, not to mention the most sleepy. Bus services are few-and-far between, and Onecote is otherwise only served by the Moorlands Connect-on demand service which usurped in this case Clowes' 456 in 2010. There will be a bit more activity come next weekend as High Peak are launching a Sundays-only Alton Towers extension to the 199 which will follow the same route as the X71 from Parsley Hay.
Daylight HDDCDEN heads west ( timetable north) at MP 545 near Hadley on the Boise City sub. Kansas Pacific met the Pueblo and Salt Lake here while the court sorted it out. KP ROW was against the bluff next to the engines. First RR to be abandoned in Colorado 1877.
