Herkunft:
In der Antike, wie auch im Mittelalter und der Moderne war und ist Eisen ein häufig verwendetes Material zum Schmieden.
Es kann nur verformt werden, solange es heiß und somit auch weich genug ist, ansonsten bricht es eher, als dass es verformt wird.
In der Politik sollte man diese Formel noch mal bedenken. Seitdem unsere Stahlwerke in den 70er und 80er Jahren demontiert und nach China verkauft wurden, ist dieser Gedanke verloren gegangen.

In politics, this formula should be reconsidered. Ever since our steel mills were dismantled and sold to China in the 1970s and 1980s, that thought has been lost.

In "my area", for most of the winter and with a peak in March, there were numerous extreme low tides and minimal high tides, this due to the over 1040hpas of adiabatic pressure and the continuous currents prevailing from the East or North-East.
So, every +1hpas over the terrestrial average pressure (gravity) value of 1013hpas corresponds to 1cm less in the level of that sea placed under the adiabatic pressure of the anticyclone and obviously vice versa in case of decreasing pressure.
The north-eastern currents tend to move the water masses towards the West and then towards the South following the anti-clockwise current that goes up the Adriatic along the Dalmatian coast and descends it from the Italian side.
All these factors "empty" the Gulf of Trieste which is also the Northernmost Spot of the entire Mediterranean Sea!
The exact opposite occurs with Low Pressure and the activation of persistent "long currents" from the South or South/East, in which cases not only Venice ends up under the surface of the Northern Adriatic Sea.

Describing the Bora, an orographic wind, therefore local, katabatic, therefore falling from areas at higher altitudes, ALWAYS coming from E/NE towards W/SW, would require a degree thesis and in any case would never be complete.
I've been traveling around all these areas for the past 40 years, but I always discover something new, so I won't go into the specifics of the area, which has so many variables and unknowns (within a very few kilometres, there are areas where it doesn't blow, despite being similar and contiguous to those around, where instead it even prevents standing), but a brief general description.
The Bora (international term in Italian), called Bura in Croatian and Burja in Slovenian, is considered the strongest and most frequent local/orographic wind in the Mediterranean (once there were dozens of episodes like this every winter and as many in the other seasons combined), but in some episodes, close to 200km/h, is probably one of the strongest orographic winds in the world at SEA LEVEL. It can be compared, at least isobarically, to the winds that are generated along the Atlantic coast of Greenland, which "fall" from the frozen plateau to the ocean, when the strong Greenlandic thermal anticyclone is present, in the heart of the island.
The Bora generally activates when a mass of cold and stable air, coming from the EAST or NORTH/EAST, tends to press on the Dinaric Alps and the eastern Julian Alps, seeking an outlet towards the sea where, in the meantime, a depression is generated.
Within a few hours between the Dinaric watershed and the coast (generally around 6-15km in northern Croatia and 20-25km for Trieste) a strong isobaric gradient is created between the high pressure in the 'danubian hinterland and low on the Adriatic, to the point of having a difference of 15hpas in a few kilometers of thickness.
This generates the wind, but then it is the orography that makes it gusty, violent, irregular; this happens because the colder air is denser than that which rises from the sea and tends to be channeled into the Dinaric gates (the first is actually in the Julian Pre-Alps, Cividale area) which are (at least) 9 from north to south, but the main ones are certainly the "Triestina" one (from Postojna-Ravbarkomanda), the one Podkraj-Col-Vipava (Vipavska dolina) the one from Gornje Jelenje towards Grobnik (Rijeka racetrack), the one from the Lić-Fužine plain towards Bakarac-Kraljevica and Most Krk and the Senj one, from above Vratnik pass.
Channeling itself and physically rolling down the mountains/reliefs, the wind strengthens by friction, turbulence and depressurization, thus becoming the Bora.

The Lemon Butterfly overwinters as an adult butterfly and can therefore be seen early in the year. Due to this wintering, the species can grow very old. Maybe even a year!
The female of the butterfly is light green, only the male of this butterfly is really lemon yellow.
The species is found from Western Europe and North Africa to Siberia.
The caterpillar lives on the trees Sporkehout and Buckthorn. Both the caterpillar and the pupa are green in color.

The Origami Institute for Strange Flying Things (STF) has investigated it and comes to the conclusion, that it is not Santa Claus, but the Witch Queen of New Orleans, also known as Marie La-Voodoo-Veau, the Wicked Witch.
Her help has been enlisted by other witches with less magical powers for one of the famous potions, temporarily turning you into a skeleton. And why???
Well, tomorrow a party is organized by Smile on Saturday! :-) - group and you only may enter if it has something to do with 'Bones'.~~~~

This 1948 Vignale bodied Packard started life on a 1938 Packard 120 chassis, and drivetrain, and was finally completed and registered as a 1948 automobile! More of the story below.
Throughout the Second World War mysteries would abound; pieces of art and precious metals would be hidden or disappeared. Then there would be the mysterious case of a Vignale-bodied Packard. In the years following the Second World War, American automakers wanted Europe as much as European builders needed America. This mutual need for each other would produce a one-off Packard that would cause many to wonder what could have been.
In 1948, Alfredo Vignale's firm in Turin would produce a purpose-built Packard. The combination would be intriguing in its own right. However, the story surrounding it would make it all the more captivating.
According to Ralph and Adeline Marano, the current owners of the 1948 Packard Vignale Victoria, 'Nobody knows much about it'. The legend the Marano's believe true would include the 1938 One Twenty chassis being shipped to Vignale's studio before the war and then being hidden away until it was completed in 1948. While plausible, there would be the simple fact Vignale had not established his own carrozzeria until after the end of the war. It is entirely possible he took on the project fully intending to establish his own place, then came the outbreak of the war and everything would be put on hold.
However, there is another theory about the order of events. Following the war the United States was stronger economically than Europe. However, Packard would actually be on the decline and would need that 'something' to help bolster its sales and widen its market. Amongst American audiences, Packard was synonymous with quality. Unfortunately, the company's sales base appeared to be reaching its limit. Therefore, the company would not only seek a new look to foster sales at home, but, they would also look to those more affluent customers in Europe who could still afford to pay for the quality of one of their cars.
In addition to longing to widen its possible market, Packard would realize that there was a market for the smaller European sportscars in the United States. Throughout the war, American servicemen had had the opportunity to see, and perhaps drive, some of the smaller coupes from European automakers. Returning to the States, this would be a potential market Packard believed it could address.
Packard was keen to test the waters. Therefore, they would take one of their One Twenty chassis, originally registered in 1939, and would send it across the Atlantic to Italy. The chassis' destination would be a coachbuilder in Turin, Italy by the name of Carrozzeria Vignale.
Alfredo Vignale had started out working for none other Pinin Farina. After the Second World War Vignale would decide to start his own effort and would soon earn praise for his designs. This recognition and praise would lead to Vignale creating bodies for the great Italian automakers Ferrari and Maserati. Vignale's reputation was well deserved and was the perfect place for Packard to send their chassis in hopes of receiving a fresh and inspiring design.
Vignale would set to work. Abiding by the purpose and the inspiration Vignale would end up designing and building a convertible coupe to rest atop the One Twenty chassis. The result would be striking. Though the chassis underneath would be nearly a decade old, the body resting on top would be ahead of its time and of great quality.
Some of the features of the car include a hood capable of being opened from either end and beautifully-blended sheetmetal that wraps completely around the undersides of the car to form belly pans. Right down to the Fiat model taillights, the overall design of the car would a European flair to it. Lighter than a standard One Twenty and powered by a straight-eight engine producing around 120hp, it is more than likely the Vignale Packard would be faster. But, even if the car wouldn't win a drag race with its more standard brethren, the Vignale Packard would go on to win a number of awards in major concours events
Unfortunately, while much of the story surrounding the car's birth would be something of a mystery, so too would its early years. It would seem clear the car would be owned for a period of time by Mark Smith and Norman Wolgin. What is much more obvious is the fact the Maranos would negotiate to purchase the car in 1989 and has remained with them ever since.
In 1954, Packard would purchase Studebaker in hopes of benefiting from the company's larger dealer network. Unfortunately, the merger would be fraught with conflict, which would hurt both companies terribly. Looking at the merger of Packard with Vignale's design, while it would be a surprising, if not strange, marriage, there are a whole lot of questions based around the notion of what could have been. Perhaps Packard and Vignale could have been one of the first to bring two continents together in car design. In the end, both companies would eventually fade from existence altogether. Packard would be lost forever while Vignale would be absorbed by an American company in Ford, but, would well and truly cease to exist by the mid-1970s. Perhaps Packard needed Vignale and Vignale needed Packard, and, the 1948 Packard Vignale Victoria is a mere taste of what the future might have held.

Howard (Northern Cardinal) loves peanuts and millet. He beat Robbie (Gray Squirrel) to Robbie's feeding station again today. Actually, this is everyone's feeding station but the only one Robbie is allowed to access.
The palm tree stump where this was located has finally collapsed from the inside out. Therefore the stone has been moved to what may or may not be it's new permanent location.
I find that where I need to stand in order to get a photo is too close to the other feeding stations and the other birds feel I might be too close for comfort. Therefore, they tend to fuss at me until I move further away, then they go about their business of eating.
That standing location does not detour them from going to Robbie's station though. While I was standing there, one of the catbirds, a wren and a tufty came to grab a bite. I just happened to be looking at Peter Pan (Eastern Bluebird) who was sitting on the bluebird box and missed those shots.
It looks like Peter is starting to re-consider his decision not to have children this year but he is having great difficulty getting Lady B to become interested again. Oh the drama, the nature shows in my yard are so much more entertaining that those so called reality shows everyone is so fond of these days. There is most certainly plenty of drama and it's all real.

As the night winds sing and temperature starts to drop, many hydrangeas have changed colour. This one is one of the few Endless Summer Hydrangeas which manage to keep their beautiful pink, among others with shades of mauve and blue. My gardener said it was because I have not spread my coffee grounds out evenly and therefore the soil varies in pH levels. Suits me very well.
Bumblebees fly from sunrise to sunset. Their entire life cycle depends on pollen and nectar from flowers for food. Flower pollen is rich in protein, and nectar is rich in sugars. Nectar therefore provides bees and bumblebees with the energy they need to fly. Pollen and nectar also serve as food for their larvae.

It's a bit the same phenomenon when looking at an object at the bottom of a swimming pool. The object is not really where it appears to be. There is therefore a deviation of the rays of the sun, and a decomposition of the light, as a prism can do.
The more red colors are closest to the sun, and the more blue colors are opposite. This is mainly visible when the sun is low on the horizon. The rays thus pass through a greater number of ice crystals and the effect is then increased.

Mulafossur, Gasadalur. This well known viewpoint (and therefore quite unoriginal) is only 15 minutes away from where we are staying. - I am also photographing analog but expect development in about 3 weeks. - I did not bring my wife's 24-70 f/2.8 but a cheaper lens. Forgot that I had no step up ring for my ND-filter so just held it in front of the camera.

BIG BIRD in a small body.
These little guys are smaller than your thumb, but seem to have NO FEAR! Huge birds like Herons and Egrets run for their lives, if they happen to notice you can see them, a half mile away.
Yet when I spot these tiny little birds almost anywhere they couldn't care less if you see them or not. In fact sometimes they become so curious about what you're up too, the will come land on a branch right next to your head so close there's no way your camera can even focus on them. Some times even Hummingbirds will do that, almost willing to land on your nose to get a good look.
While even flocks of thousands of geese or ducks will scramble for their lives if you merely drive by in a truck a quarter mile away. What's up with that?

It is one of those winters again in Berlin: hardly any sun, therefore often gloomy, grey weather.

«Aesculus is a Latin name of a type of oak sacred to Jupiter cited by the Romans and therefore attributed by Linnaeus to this species, even if, as he well did know, included in a family well distinct from those of the Fagaceae. After some Authors, it should get its origin from the Latin “escare” = to eat, due to the fruits eaten by some animals (especially sheep and goats).
The name of the species hippocastanum, comes from the two Greek terms “hìppos” = horse and “kástanon” = chestnut (chestnut tree or horse chestnut) in reference to the fact that the Turks used the seeds, rich in starch, for feeding the horses suffering from broken-wind and for stimulating them.
The genus Aesculus includes, after various Authors, 20-25 species of the temperate regions of the Boreal Hemisphere, in particular Boreal America.
The original home range of the horse-chestnut is located in the south-eastern European-Illyrian region (Balkans). It was introduced in Central Europe and in Italy in 1557 by the famous Sienese botanist Matthiolus, who got its seeds from Constantinople.
Despite its vulgar name of “Indian Chestnut”, in its natural habitat (Greece, Bulgaria, Albania) it forms mixed woods with ash, alder and maple. A meticulous historical reconstruction of the researches of the pre-historic range of this enigmatic species was published in 1936 by the Prof. Antonio Baldacci edited by the Academy of Sciences of Bologna Institute “Sull’ Aesculus hippocastanum L. – A proposito di un relitto dendroide eurasiatico della flora balcanica e specialmente illirico-ellenica”.

City park the “Leidse Hout” is one of the largest city parks in Leiden.
The construction of the “Leidse Hout” started in 1930 as a job creation project, as did the “Zuiderpark in The Hague, the Amsterdamse Bos and the Rotterdam Kralingse Bos”. The park officially opened its doors on June 30, 1961. The park was designed by landscape architect Klaas van Nes. The “Leidse Hout” is mainly planted with typical Dutch trees and plants. There are therefore still many oaks, ash, beech and alder to be found in the park. Mushrooms are also doing well in the “Leidse Hout”, more than 140 species grow there. The “Leidse Hout” is the only place in Leiden where the red-tailed bat can be seen.
In the park you will find the tavern "Het Theehuis", a deer park, a duck pond and a bandstand.
The “Grote Speelweide” (Large playground) is on the north side of the park. The free pop festival “Werfpop” is held here every year.
