Mespelbrunn Castle is a late-medieval/early-Renaissance moated castle on the territory of the town of Mespelbrunn, between Frankfurt and Würzburg, built in a tributary valley of the Elsava valley, within the Spessart forest. It is a popular tourist attraction and has become a famous Spessart landmark.
The first precursor of Mespelbrunn Castle was a simple house. The owner was Hamann Echter, vizedom of Aschaffenburg, a title which means that he was the representative of the ruling prince, the Archbishop of Mainz Johann von Nassau-Wiesbaden-Idstein (de) at the castle and town of Aschaffenburg. On 1 May 1412, Johann gave the site, a forest clearing next to a pond, to Echter, a knight, who constructed a house without fortifications. It was a reward for Echter's services against the Czechs. The Echter family (de) originates from the Odenwald region. Their name presumably means "der die Acht vollstreckt", the executor of the ostracism. In the 15th century the Spessart was a wild and unexploited virgin forest, used as a hideout by bandits and Hussites, who despoiled the regions nearby. Therefore, in 1427 Hamann Echter, the son of the first owner, began to rebuild his father's house to a fortified castle with walls, towers, and a moat using the nearby lake.
In 1957, Mespelbrunn Castle was one of the locations of the German film Das Wirtshaus im Spessart (The Spessart Inn, 1958), based on the novella by Wilhelm Hauff.

Un couple de martins-pêcheurs élève normalement 2 nichées par an, voire 3 ou 4, si les conditions sont favorables ou si une nichée a été détruite.
La première ponte a lieu dès la mi-mars en Europe occidentale, un mois plus tard en Europe orientale. De 4 à 8 œufs sont pondus à un jour d'intervalle, à même le sol de la chambre de ponte. D'un beau blanc brillant et de forme presque sphérique, ils ont un diamètre moyen à peine supérieur à 2 cm et ne pèsent guère plus de 4 grammes.
Le couple se partage, à parts à peu près égales, le temps de couvaison et se relaie par factions de 2 à 5 heures. L'incubation dure trois semaines et ne commence qu'une fois le dernier œuf pondu ; les éclosions ont donc toutes lieu au même moment.
Nus à l'éclosion et incapables de maintenir leur température interne, les petits sont réchauffés par les adultes pendant une semaine, jusqu'à ce qu'ils se couvrent de courtes plumes. Les parents peuvent alors se consacrer tous deux à leur ravitaillement.
Les poissons apportés aux jeunes sont légèrement plus longs que ceux que les adultes capturent pour eux-mêmes : entre 4 et 7 cm, avec un maximum de 10 cm. Pendant la becquée, les petits, disposés en étoile à l'intérieur de la chambre, sont nourris chacun à son tour durant les deux à trois premières semaines. C'est l'époque où le sol du nid se couvre de leurs pelotes de réjection, et où les parents se baignent souvent. A pair of kingfishers normally rear 2 broods a year, or 3 or 4, if conditions are favorable or if a brood has been destroyed.
The first spawning takes place in mid-March in Western Europe, a month later in Eastern Europe. From 4 to 8 eggs are laid one day apart on the floor of the laying chamber. They are bright white in color and almost spherical in shape. They have an average diameter of just over 2 cm and weigh little more than 4 grams.
The couple share, roughly equally, the brooding time and relays in factions from 2 to 5 hours. The incubation lasts three weeks and begins only once the last egg laid; hatching therefore takes place at the same time.
Naked at hatching and unable to maintain their internal temperature, the young are warmed by adults for a week, until they cover themselves with short feathers. Parents can then devote themselves to their food.
The fish brought to the young are slightly longer than those that the adults catch for themselves: between 4 and 7 cm, with a maximum of 10 cm. During the beak, the little ones, arranged in a star inside the chamber, are each fed during the first two to three weeks. It is the time when the ground of the nest is covered with their balls of rejection, and where the parents bathe often. A little later, the youths all turn to the inlet hose, huddled together, or walk down the hallway to meet the adults.

Groynes reduce longshore transport by trapping beach material and causing the beach orientation to change relative to the dominant wave directions. They mainly influence bedload transport and are most effective on shingle or gravel beaches. Sand is carried in temporary suspension during higher energy wave or current conditions and will therefore tend to be carried over or around any cross-shore structures. Cascada de Aigualluts, La Ribagorza, Huesca, Aragón, España.
La Besurta-Collado de La Renclusa-Aigualluts-La Besurta
Esta ruta de senderismo visita uno de los parajes más bonitos del Valle de Benasque: Aigualluts. El recorrido se puede hacer sin mucho esfuerzo en cuatro horas, pero vale la pena entretenerse a cada tramo para observar con detenimiento el paisaje. Empieza y termina en el mismo lugar, el aparcamiento situado en La Besurta.
El camino discurre al principio en dirección sur, por un camino muy evidente, hasta llegar en 50 minutos al refugio de La Renclusa. Lo rodeamos (hay un poste indicador) para continuar en dirección sur hacia el collado de La Renclusa. La senda va virando hacia el este hasta alcanzar el collado, el punto más alto que alcanzaremos hoy, al que llegamos en algo menos de hora y media desde el inicio.
Seguimos por la senda en dirección este, ya en descenso, hasta el Plan de Aigualluts (dos horas y veinte minutos).
Aquí tomamos hacia la derecha para rodear el llano por un camino equipado con algunas palancas (puentecillos) que salvan los numerosos barrancos y arroyos que llegan hasta este llano.
Después de rodearlo, podemos ver a la izquierda el Forao de Aigualluts, una sima por donde se cuela el agua que baja del glaciar del Aneto para ir a dar a L'Artiga de Lin, en el vecino valle de Viella, y tributar, por tanto, al Garona y no al Ésera.
Al final del llano que encontramos a continuación podemos continuar de frente para volver a La Besurta por el camino viejo o ascender un poco a la izquierda para ir a buscar el camino de ascenso a La Renclusa.
La Besurta-Collado de La Renclusa-Aigualluts-La Besurta
This hiking route visits one of the most beautiful spots in the Benasque Valley: Aigualluts. The route can be done without much effort in four hours, but it is worth taking the time to observe the landscape in detail. It starts and ends in the same place, the car park located in La Besurta.
The path initially runs southwards, along a very obvious path, until reaching the La Renclusa refuge in 50 minutes. We go around it (there is a signpost) to continue southwards towards the La Renclusa pass. The path turns eastwards until reaching the pass, the highest point we will reach today, which we reach in just under an hour and a half from the start.
We continue along the path in an easterly direction, now descending, to the Plan de Aigualluts (two hours and twenty minutes).
Here we turn right to go around the plain on a path equipped with some levers (small bridges) that cross the numerous ravines and streams that reach this plain.
After going around it, we can see on the left the Forao de Aigualluts, a chasm through which the water that comes down from the Aneto glacier seeps to flow into L'Artiga de Lin, in the neighbouring valley of Viella, and therefore flows into the Garonne and not the Ésera.
At the end of the plain that we find below, we can continue straight ahead to return to La Besurta along the old path or ascend a little to the left to find the path that goes up to La Renclusa.
I think that autumn is often the best season for leaves. Whilst we all enjoy seeing new leaves in spring after the barren season of winter, it is in autumn that we get to notice all the fine veining, delicate textures and sharp edges of the leaves as they change colour and array themselves in their autumnal costumes of reds, browns, oranges and golds.
Autumn is now well and truly with us here in Melbourne, and the cooler winds of seasonal change are blowing away the remnants of summer, like it tosses the red, gold and orange leaves that carpet the ground.
The other day was a perfect autumnal day in Melbourne: sunny, but not too bright, warm, but not hot, and perfectly still. Therefore I thought I'd go for a walk and take advantage of the sunny conditions and take some photographs. This includes these wonderful golden yellow English maple leaves in the inner northern Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy.

The Weather was grey, it was not a day to make nice pictures outside. This did not prevent us to take a walk in the charming old town of Tournus, a well preserved town with a lot of typical old houses.
Other places to visit are the Hotel Dieu, and a museum dedicated to the painter Greuze, a famous painter of the 18th century native of Tournus. Both were closed, it will be for me the occasion of another visit when the weather will be better.
Returning to the Abbey Saint-Philibert we had visited on our arrival, we began to see it illuminated in the distance as the afternoon ended. Therefore, I pulled out the camera. . .

L'abbaye s'illumine
Il faisait gris, ce n'était pas un temps à faire de belles photos dehors. Cela ne nous a pas empêchés de faire un petit tour dans la charmante vieille ville de Tournus, une ville bien préservée avec pas mal de vieilles maisons typiques.
On peut aussi y visiter l'hôtel Dieu, et un musée dédié au peintre Greuze, célèbre peintre du 18ème siècle natif de Tournus. Les 2 endroits étaient fermés, ce sera pour moi l'occasion d'une autre visite lorsque le temps sera meilleur.
En retournant vers l'abbaye Saint-Philibert qu'on avait visitée en arrivant, on a commencé à l'apercevoir illuminée au loin alors que l'après-midi se terminait. J'ai alors ressorti l'appareil photo . . .

Remembering a lovely and adventurous day spent wandering the streets of Hội An, Vietnam.
Located in Hoi An Ancient Town - A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Bridge is one of the most attractive cultural destinations in Vietnam. Being built in the 16th century, this monument has witnessed numberless changes in the town.
The Bridge, known as Cau Pagoda (Chùa Cầu), was built in the 16th century with Japanese businessmen’s assistance. The bridge has been associated with a monster’s legend called Namazu, a Japanese mythological monster whose movements cause earthquakes and floods. Its head is located in India, while its body is in Vietnam and its tail in Japan.
The bridge was built with the belief of a magical sword to pin down Namazu’s back. Therefore, the monster could not wriggle, preventing natural disasters in Vietnam, Japan, and India. Hence, the lives of people in these three countries would happen in peace and prosperity.
The Bridge has gone through seven renovations over 400 years, particularly in 1763, 1815, 1875, 1917, 1962, 1986, and 1996. Some small adjustments have been made on the roof, floor, and pillars.

Positano, coneguda com La Divina, és una de les destinacions més populars i concorregudes no només de la Costa Amalfitana, sinó de tot Itàlia. Declarada Patrimoni de la Humanitat per la Unesco, és a uns 75 minuts de Nàpols i a 20 minuts de Sorrento. Positano ja era un lloc de vacances favorit dels antics romans, però va viure la seva època daurada després de la Segona Guerra Mundial, quan va passar de ser un pobre poble de pescadors a ser el destí favorit d'artistes i famosos. Davant la costa de Positano, es troba un dels llocs més bells del Mediterrani: les anomenades Isole delle Sirene (Illes de les Sirenes). I would like to try to explain the magic of one of the destinations we chose for our special edition tours. The Magnifica Amalfi and Capri itinerary is a hiking tour in one of the most beautiful places on earth. A place where gods would live.
There is so much I could say but for now I will focus on Positano and save Amalfi and Capri for another blog. I am very excited about Positano because it is a unique and beautiful place, full of interesting legends and stories.
The area of the Amalfi Coast is a Unsesco World Heritage Site and it is curious that Condè Nast Traveler listed Positano in its top 20 list of the most beloved places on Pinterest therefore giving it social media validation and I think that is worth something.

La Besurta-Collado de La Renclusa-Aigualluts-La Besurta
Esta ruta de senderismo visita uno de los parajes más bonitos del Valle de Benasque: Aigualluts. El recorrido se puede hacer sin mucho esfuerzo en cuatro horas, pero vale la pena entretenerse a cada tramo para observar con detenimiento el paisaje. Empieza y termina en el mismo lugar, el aparcamiento situado en La Besurta.
El camino discurre al principio en dirección sur, por un camino muy evidente, hasta llegar en 50 minutos al refugio de La Renclusa. Lo rodeamos (hay un poste indicador) para continuar en dirección sur hacia el collado de La Renclusa. La senda va virando hacia el este hasta alcanzar el collado, el punto más alto que alcanzaremos hoy, al que llegamos en algo menos de hora y media desde el inicio.
Seguimos por la senda en dirección este, ya en descenso, hasta el Plan de Aigualluts (dos horas y veinte minutos).
Aquí tomamos hacia la derecha para rodear el llano por un camino equipado con algunas palancas (puentecillos) que salvan los numerosos barrancos y arroyos que llegan hasta este llano.
Después de rodearlo, podemos ver a la izquierda el Forao de Aigualluts, una sima por donde se cuela el agua que baja del glaciar del Aneto para ir a dar a L'Artiga de Lin, en el vecino valle de Viella, y tributar, por tanto, al Garona y no al Ésera.
Al final del llano que encontramos a continuación podemos continuar de frente para volver a La Besurta por el camino viejo o ascender un poco a la izquierda para ir a buscar el camino de ascenso a La Renclusa.
La Besurta-Collado de La Renclusa-Aigualluts-La Besurta
This hiking route visits one of the most beautiful spots in the Benasque Valley: Aigualluts. The route can be done without much effort in four hours, but it is worth taking the time to observe the landscape in detail. It starts and ends in the same place, the car park located in La Besurta.
The path initially runs southwards, along a very obvious path, until reaching the La Renclusa refuge in 50 minutes. We go around it (there is a signpost) to continue southwards towards the La Renclusa pass. The path turns eastwards until reaching the pass, the highest point we will reach today, which we reach in just under an hour and a half from the start.
We continue along the path in an easterly direction, now descending, to the Plan de Aigualluts (two hours and twenty minutes).
Here we turn right to go around the plain on a path equipped with some levers (small bridges) that cross the numerous ravines and streams that reach this plain.
After going around it, we can see on the left the Forao de Aigualluts, a chasm through which the water that comes down from the Aneto glacier seeps to flow into L'Artiga de Lin, in the neighbouring valley of Viella, and therefore flows into the Garonne and not the Ésera.
At the end of the plain that we find below, we can continue straight ahead to return to La Besurta along the old path or ascend a little to the left to find the path that goes up to La Renclusa.

This photo show a very small part of the surface of a leather vaulting buck. The vaulting buck was exposed to the weather, on a balcony and not very well cared for, when I bought it.
Therefore, especially at the edges, the leather has many cracks, and partly broken out of the upper port of the leather. Cracks of different sizes, length, shape and form depending of the usage and the exposure to sun and rain.
As for the size, the longest parts shown are shorter than 60 mmm, to many pictures and no ruler.

During the second Empire, this neighbourhood, known as 'little Poland', underwent significant redevelopment following construction work by Haussmann – broad straight avenues were laid out and people flocked to live in the new houses built there, greatly increasing the population. A parish was therefore established and a church built, and great care was taken that the church matched the elegance and wealth of the surrounding housing. The architect called in to design Saint Augustin was Victor Baltard, famed for his previous work on the Halles de Paris

Truth to say I had never heard of Athelhampton Hall and had therefore no plans to visit it. We were driving from Dorchester to Tolpuddle to visit the Tolpuddle martyrs museum when we spotted the house through a gate , we pulled in and decided to take a look. Glad we did we could only see the gardens but they were splendid . I will post some images in due course but for now a view of the handsome house
Athelhampton Hall is a Grade I listed 15th-century privately owned country house on 160 acres of parkland. Sir William Martyn had the current Great Hall built in about 1493. A West Wing and Gatehouse were added in 1550, but in 1862 the Gatehouse was demolished.
In 1891, the house was acquired by the antiquarian Alfred de Lafontaine, who carried out restoration to the interior and added the North Wing in 1920–21.
At the same time de Lafontaine engaged Inigo Thomas to create one of England's great gardens as a series of "outdoor rooms" inspired by the Renaissance 20 acres of formal gardens are encircled by the River Piddle, and consist of eight walled gardens with numerous fountains and pavilions, plus a balustraded terrace, statues, obelisks and vistas through gate piers. Great Court contains 12 giant yew pyramids set around the pool by the great terrace. The lawn to the west has an early 16th-century circular dovecote, and the south terrace features a vast Magnolia grandiflora and a Banksian rose. Pear trees cover the old walls and support roses and Clematis.
The house was regularly visited by Thomas Hardy; his father was a stonemason and worked on the house. It was during this time that Hardy painted a watercolour of the south front including the gatehouse. Hardy set the poem "The Dame of Athelhall" at the house.
