Witte klokjesbloem
The campanula is originally a mountain plant. It is therefore not surprising that this plant does well between the stones. The flowers are also called bellflowers. They owe this name to the bell shape. The flowers bloom in many different colors, including white, pink, purple and blue. The campanula brightens up the stones completely with its flowers in these beautiful colors and therefore also works well as a filler between stones and pavement.

Ah the goldrims, when raising these beauties you never know how long you might have them in protective custody. My past experience with them has been that they take their time eating, they are very messy and they will emerge on their own time.
I have had them eclose (hatch) anywhere between fourteen days to ten months after pupation. When they stick around they take up a lot of space. Therefore, I chose not to raise any last season. Instead, I ended up releasing the hold over's from the season before.
Reluctantly, this season I have decided to give them a boost. So, I brought in several clusters of eggs when I saw them on the vine. The eggs have hatched and the caterpillars are munching away in protective custody. Now, if they will only eclose within a couple of weeks instead of several months, I shall be a happy gardener.

There is a horrid native plant that grows abundantly in my garden - called Horsetail or Shavegrass. It is so far impossible to get rid of in my garden, having tried everything in my defensive arsenal. Perhaps it is time to bow to the persistence of this ancient plant which goes back 300 million years to the Devon era. If we were ever to have a nuclear holocaust which I don't even want to contemplate, I'm sure that this plant will survive! It does have herbal uses, but I don't even want to imagine that!! If only it didn't crowd out my wanted plants!!! The spore-bearing stalks are shown in this photo.

A fellow photographer and friend from the UK wanted to learn more about masking in Photoshop, and Zoom to the rescue. I started with one of my shots that never thrilled me, but thought it was a good simple shot to start with. As far as the dime a dozen shots of '55 Chevys go, IMO, it was just OK, and it's color was not my favorite. Kind of a peach color, ergo the title. I showed him the power of the new Object Selection tool in Photoshop, and if any further cleanup is required a few other tools can be used. However, typically I use the Polygonal tool for that. I went on to tell him that if you are selecting the subject (car here) but want to do something with the rest of the image, (the background) and not the subject, you must click Inverse before doing any of that. I told him that if you are going to spray out the background like above, you can pick any color you want, but a color already in the image usually works well, or as in the case here, a complimentary color. Maybe a bit of a stretch here, and being that the cars color is in the red family, the compliment of red is green, and therefore my reasoning for going with a shade of green. So, as I'm working my way through this demo process with him my original feelings about not liking the image started to change, and I actually kind of like it now. I think it's proof as to how, with a little extra play, you can turn a mediocre image into something a little more special. So, the takeaway here is don't throw in the towel on those "so so" images, there just may be hope for them.

Invermoriston Bridge was initially started in 1805, but it took eight years to complete, the delay caused by 'idle workers' and a 'languid and inattentive contractor'! It consists of two stone arches, straddling the two channels either side of a large rock 'island' in the middle of the channel. While the location and angle of the bridge may seem odd compare to the modern road layout, it must be remembered that shallow arch bridges were only proven later in the century, and that Telford always played it safe, looking for longevity rather than ease of use. He therefore chose to make use of the rocky outcrop in the middle of the river, to ease the crossing and provide it with extra strength in time of flood. It would also have been a lot easier to build!

The town of Gräfenberg is located at the southern end of Upper Franconia in the valley of the Kalkach River, which borders the historic old town. The valley lies directly on the slope edge of the Franconian Alb. Therefore, Gräfenberg has considerable differences in altitude (400 m to 550 m). The highlands around Gräfenberg form the area of the White Jurassic. Cherries are often grown there.

Lake Constance was in thick fog in the morning. Colorful pictures were therefore unfortunately not possible. At least this red life ring gave a color accent, so I decided to edit in B&W and red.

In the midst of the COVID19 lockdown (2019), the globally acclaimed muralist ROA finished this masterpiece on the façade of the GUM (Ghent University Museum).
This new Science Museum is located in the heart of the city of Ghent, ROA’s place of birth, and an important part of the natural history collections are hidden in the depositories underneath the museum. Therefore, ROA was able to find his source of inspiration literally just a few metres from his artwork.
You see a magnificent pile of skeletons, including that of an elephant, a rhinoceros, a grizzly bear and an okapi.
This work of art, which is spread out over about 290 m2 of museum wall.
ROA is known for his impressive black-and-white wall paintings featuring animals, with or without skin, fur or hair.
He creates vibrant, detailed murals, that bring wildlife back into the heart of the city. With his work he points out the disappearance of the habitat of animals in places where man has settled. He invites us to take a closer look at the natural world we are all a part of.
His work can be seen all over the world and he is counted among the very best contemporary street artists.

The New Synagogue on Oranienburger Strasse in the district of Berlin-Mitte is a building of outstanding importance for the history of the Jews in Berlin and an important architectural monument. It was inaugurated in 1866. The remaining part of the structure is a listed building.
It was once the largest and most important synagogue in Germany and today is not only a place where Jewish life is practiced, but also a popular tourist attraction.

Today's Sunday is national mourning day, in Germany a public holiday to commemorate those who fell in the Second World War. therefore with these pictures I include the memory of the fate of the Jewish fellow citizens who were inflicted so much suffering in this period and who have an infinite number of deaths to mourn.

Hardenstein Castle is a ruin on the middle Ruhr between the Herbede district and the core town of Witten in what is now the Ennepe-Ruhr district in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is surrounded by the Hardenstein nature reserve of the same name and is located near the Muttental. Until the completion of the Ruhr Valley Railway (today's museum railway) in the nineteenth century, the castle lay directly on the river. Typologically, the complex, which has long been known as a castle, is a "solid house" - i.e. a manor house.[1] It mainly served as the residence of its noble owners and was therefore only able to defend itself to a limited extent.

After the small orchids presented in my last uploads, I now present to you an exuberant flower of Brazilian origin, and know as Bráunia, Rosa da mata, Rosa da montanha, Chapéu de sol (see the names in english below).
Although quite large (the ones I photographed here are approximately from 15 to 20cm in diameter), they were also difficult to photograph properly because they are hanging on the branches, wrapped in the shadow of numerous leaves, therefore with low light.

.Popular Names: Rose of the jungle, Brownea, Mountain's Rose, Sun Hat
.Origin: The species is native to Brazil, but not endemic, being also recorded in Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela and Bolivia. Its occurrence in Brazilian lands was officially registered in Amazonas, Pará, Federal District and Rio de Janeiro. Possibly it is also present in other states, a fact that can only be confirmed by more comprehensive botanical studies.
.Average height: 6-8m in cultivation, 10-20m in the forest.
.Morphological characteristics: They have large leaves and, when young, have a pinkish-purple color, turning green when adults.
The inflorescences are showy, large and composed of several dense flowers in the form of pendant balls, which appear at the end of the branches; the color of the flowers can vary from orange to red.
Very ornamental tree due to the beauty of its flowering, which especially attracts hummingbirds. The wood can be used to make crates. The flowers are used in traditional medicine as an anti-hemorrhagic, property already partially confirmed by scientific studies.

Eco park Sigiriya is also known as “Hurulu park”, “Sigiriya wildlife reserve” or “Habaran national park”. It is a wildlife reserve located near Habarana on the A9 road. Eco park Sigiriya is a biosphere reserve since January 1977. The wildlife reserve is a habitat for a large number of wild elephants and therefore it is one of the best places to spot wild elephants on the island.
Eco park Sigiriya is a good alternative for Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks, especially in the rainy season.

Unfortunately this tawny owl did not appear until long after sunset. so i had to set the Camera on 6sec. of shutter speed at iso 2500 Therefore the picture quality is not that good..still happy about my first tawny owl...never before photographed a bird with long exposure😂

CORNWERD - The Afsluitdijk, length 32 km (19,88 miles) is protecting the Netherlands from the Sea for more than eighty years. However, the dyke no longer meets the current requirements for flood protection.
Rijkswaterstaat is therefore going to reinforce the Afsluitdijk. The body of the dyke will be widened and raised by about 2 metres and the cladding on the outer side will be replaced. Concrete blocks will be placed over the existing basalt blocks on the lower slope. These 'Level blocks X Plus' weight 6,500 kilograms each and have a wave retardant effect. Because of their symmetry and the regular way they are positioned, the blocks have a tranquil appearance that reinforces the austere and autonomous character of the dyke. Every block will be GPS chipped, making them easy to inspect and maintain.

Der Kleiber (Sitta europaea) ist eine Vogelart aus der Familie der Kleiber.
Name
Der Name bezieht sich darauf, dass der Kleiber den Eingang von Bruthöhlen anderer Vögel, zum Beispiel die von Spechten, mit Lehm verklebt, um sie selbst zu nutzen. Der Begriff „Kleiber“ stammt aus dem Mittelhochdeutschen und bezeichnete Handwerker, die Lehmwände erstellten. Um die Höhle vor dem Zugriff von Mardern oder Krähen zu schützen, „mauern“ die Kleiber den Eingang zu ihren Bruthöhlen mit einer Mischung aus Lehm und Speichel so weit zu, dass sie gerade durchpassen. Der Kleiber wird auch „Spechtmeise“ genannt, da seine Lebensweise und sein Aussehen an beide Vögel – Spechte und Meisen – erinnert.

Merkmale
Der Kleiber erreicht eine Körperlänge von 12 bis 14,5 Zentimetern. Der Körper ist gedrungen mit großem Kopf, sehr kurzem Hals und kurzem Schwanz. Der Schnabel ist lang, spitz und grau gefärbt. Die Oberseite des Gefieders ist blaugrau und die Unterseite je nach Unterart weiß bis ockerfarbig oder rostrot gefärbt. Auf den immer rotbraun gefärbten Oberschwanzdecken sind große, weiße Flecken. Der Kleiber hat einen schwarzen Augenstreifen. Die Wangen und die Kehle sind weiß. Die Iris ist schwarz und die Beine sind orangegelb.
Stimme
Der Kleiber ist sehr ruffreudig und laut, daher ist er meistens als erster anhand seiner Stimme zu bemerken. Er hat ein umfangreiches Repertoire. Bei der Nahrungssuche ruft er einen scharf und spitz, etwa wie „zit“ klingenden Kontaktruf. Bei Erregung ruft er den kräftigen, lauten und etwa wie „twett“ klingenden Warnruf. Dieser wird oft in schnellen, kurzen Folgen mit kurzen Pausen zwischen mehreren Folgen gerufen.
Der Gesang besteht aus mehreren, lauten Strophen unterschiedlichen Typs, die von einer erhöhten Sitzwarte aus vorgetragen werden. Meist sind es langsame Folgen gleicher Pfeiftöne, die etwas an- oder absteigen können, etwa wie „wuih wuih wuih wuih...“ oder „wiiü wiiü wiiü wiiü“. Manche Varianten der Strophen können auch schnell, klar und trillernd, etwa wie „wiwiwiwiwiwi“, oder langsamer und rhythmischer gereiht, wie „djüdjüDJÜ djüdjüDJÜ“, klingen.

The Eurasian nuthatch or wood nuthatch (Sitta europaea) is a small passerine bird found throughout the Palearctic and in Europe, where its name is the nuthatch. Like other nuthatches, it is a short-tailed bird with a long bill, blue-grey upperparts and a black eye-stripe. It is a vocal bird with a repeated loud dwip call. There are more than 20 subspecies in three main groups; birds in the west of the range have orange-buff underparts and a white throat, those in Russia have whitish underparts, and those in the east have a similar appearance to European birds, but lack the white throat.
Its preferred habitat is mature deciduous or mixed woodland with large, old trees, preferably oak. Pairs hold permanent territories, and nest in tree holes, usually old woodpecker nests, but sometimes natural cavities. If the entrance to the hole is too large, the female plasters it with mud to reduce its size, and often coats the inside of the cavity too. The 6–9 red-speckled white eggs are laid on a deep base of pine or other wood chips.
The Eurasian nuthatch eats mainly insects, particularly caterpillars and beetles, although in autumn and winter its diet is supplemented with nuts and seeds. The young are fed mainly on insects, with some seeds, food items mainly being found on tree trunks and large branches. The nuthatch can forage when descending trees head first, as well as when climbing. It readily visits bird tables, eating fatty man-made food items as well as seeds. It is an inveterate hoarder, storing food year-round. Its main natural predator is the Eurasian sparrowhawk.
Fragmentation of woodland can lead to local losses of breeding birds, but the species' range is still expanding. It has a large population and huge breeding area, and is therefore classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as being of least concern.

The adults can be observed on the flowers of plants during the day, where they capture small soft insects such as aphids, caterpillars and the like on which they feed, as well as pollen. The larvae stay on the ground where they eat small slugs, snails, and other plant pest larvae. It is therefore a useful insect for pest control.

Its Italian name is “Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti” and composed of 12 ramps and 135 travertine steps, it is considered the widest and longest staircase of Europe, welcoming millions of tourists and Romans who visit at all times of the day.
The ‘Spanish steps’ in Rome, built in Rococo style between 1723 and 1726, are the steps that lead from the Piazza di Spagna square to the French monastery church Trinita dei Monti (built between 1502–1587). There are 135 steps and three different terraces, referring to the Holy Trinity (the Trinità). The top of the stairs near the Egyptian obelisk offers a beautiful view, albeit one shared with throngs of other tourists. The name can be a bit confusing, as the construction of the steps was actually commissioned by the French (Louis XII). In the 17th century, the Spanish embassy was located on the square – ‘Piazza di Spagna’ – at the base of the stairs, hence the name ‘Spanish Steps’. The official name is therefore not Spanish steps, but Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti.

This temple is located on the fridge of the Kyoto Basin, where the gentle slope leading Arashiyama Mountains begin. It is known as having a moss garden. The moss stays green around the year. Therefore, I didn't feel the sense of seasons just as I had been there the last time in late November.

"The black-tailed deer is one of nine subspecies of the mule deer. It was first recorded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-06.
Black-tailed deer live in the temperate coniferous forests along the Pacific coast. These forests are characterized by cool temperatures and lots of rain, but an overall mild climate. Black-tailed deer do not therefore migrate in response to seasonal changes, unlike some of the other mule deer subspecies. Instead, black-tailed deer often spend their entire life in the same general area.
Black-tailed deer can be distinguished from mule deer by their larger tail, the back of which is completely covered with black or dark brown hairs. Mule deer have smaller tails in which only the tip is covered with black hairs. Black-tailed deer are generally smaller than mule deer."

More info for future photographers:
Currently (Dec 2016), lava enters the ocean at Kamokuna (best access road is from Kalapana). Check with rangers at Volcanoes National Park before leaving. Sometimes, the road is closed (mainly due to wind and smoke direction). Don'r expect to see clear lava. Most of the time, you see is smoke and every minute for a moment you see the red lava. Since the red lava glows in dark, I recommend to go there before sunrise or after sunset. The sun sets behind the lava at the location. Therefore, in afternoon, you are shooting in sunset direction.
You definitely need a telephoto zoom lens. I recommend at least a 300mm zoom lens. The other essential element is trip pod since you are shooting mostly in low light time of the day. Have a cable shutter release is very important. Try to get to the location at least one hour before the sunset (since a large group of people gathers to see the scene).

The Trinidad motmot is endemic to the forests of Trinidad and Tobago. Despite the bold colours and large size, it can be difficult to see in the forest gloom. I was lucky to catch this one in relatively good light. A relative of the Old World rollers, it feeds on lizards, insects, fruit and snails. It cracks open the shells of snails to get at the flesh using a stone as an anvil, in the manner of the European song thrush (Turdus philomelos).
On being approached by a predator -- there are ocelots on Trinidad -- the motmot rapidly switches its prominent racquet tail from side to side. This has the effect of saving both parties energy: the motmot signals that the predator has been spotted and that the prey is agile enough to escape; it therefore does not bother to expend energy on fleeing. The ocelot knows that pursuing the motmot will probably be a waste of energy which might be conserved for more successful projects; it therefore does not bother to try to catch the motmot.
