am getting braver about asking people if i can take their pictures :) this is the very talented carpenter who has been rehabbing shops at the mall. to him i am the russian spy ~grin~ cause i take pics of everything!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
peter, my get-pushed partner for round 20, has challenged me to take pictures of people with recognizable faces (not hidden or obscured).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

i learned several things about myself as a photographer whilst doing these pics.

* i am SHY, asking ppl if it's ok is a bit tough (worry about rejection?).

* doing street photography can be a bit harrowing when you only have a little P&S without much zoom potential

* i need to take more ppl pics

* taking pics from in a bright blue car just screams,"look i'm taking pics of *you*!!!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the album with the pictures i shot is here:
i am planning on continuing to add to it, so thank you, peter, for the challenge :):)
Adam was born to a multi-talented beauty queen Mother and a Father who, in addition to being a US Army Spy and a Counter-Intelligence Special Agent, was also a highly accomplished entrepreneur. Adam was taught at a young age that, in both life and business, loyalty is a requirement for success. He’s had the honor of working directly with his father in several of the family businesses. In fact, this is where he learned crucial entrepreneurial skills and honed his talents with international business strategies and venture capitalism.
Adam earned his Bachelors of Science Degree in International Business and Marketing from the University of Utah. He was hand-picked by the President of the University’s renowned School of Business to compete with dozens of other ambitious nationwide-graduates for the opportunity to secure a lucrative job within a prestigious Fortune 100 company.
Adam‘s hard work and creativity helped him land this job of a lifetime. He obtained incredible business experience there and spent years innovating, improving processes and setting sales records. Although this dream job in Traditional Corporate America was a fun challenge for him, and something he truly enjoyed mastering, Adam’s natural entrepreneurial spirit kept nudging him to do something more significant with his time and talents.
Since 2001, Adam has been involved in the Health and Wellness Industry as a successful Entrepreneur, Broker, Product Developer and Manufacturer of Cosmeceutical products. During his career, he has worked with some of the most recognizable Fortune 500 businesses along with many top international Network Marketing companies. Adam has consistently proven his unique ability to help his clients achieve their goals through creative Distribution-Channel Placement, innovative Product Development and custom Manufacturing. Adam currently owns three profitable businesses.
Admittedly, Adam was not initially a fan of Network Marketing. He did not understand the business model because it was new to him. However, once he learned that the REAL focus of Direct Sales is to help average people get a taste of entrepreneurialism --- with minimal risk and at a low cost --- Adam was absolutely convinced of the potential with Multi-Level Marketing.
Since joining the company as one of the original 11 founding distributors, Adam has discovered that many of his life-goals truly do align perfectly with Network Marketing. Adam enjoys helping others find significance. Adam is most grateful for the complete time-freedom he has with his fantastic wife and five children. It’s my pleasure to introduce you to Adam Paul Green, MXI Corp Ambassador and Multi-Millionaire Earner.
A TALENTED artist is set to make a splash at one of Darlington most prestigious charity fundraising events with her under the sea designs.
Darlington College national diploma art and design student Danielle Wheatley had her artwork chosen from dozens of entries by new Mayor Bryan Thistlethwaite to publicise the annual Mayor’s Ball - one of the highlights in the town’s social calendar.
Programme leader for art and design at Darlington College Donna Slyfield said: “Our art department has worked in partnership with the events team for the Mayor’s Ball for seven years competing to design artwork to promote the event.
“The completion is an important part of our curriculum and it gives the students a chance to work to a live brief, meet deadlines and develop their professionalism within the industry.
“This year Mayor Thistlethwaite, a keen sub aqua diver, gave our students the brief of under the sea to come up with nautical designs based around Whitby and the fishing industry, and they have produced some incredible designs.
“Danielle has worked really hard and I’m really pleased that her work was chosen.”
The winning artwork will be used on promotional posters as well as flyers, tickets, menus and table plans for the charity event which will be hosted by the Mayor and Mayoress at The Dolphin Centre in October to help raise thousands of pounds for the charities – Diabetes UK, Click and the RNLI.
Danielle, 19, of Darlington said: “I’m so pleased. This is the first time I have ever won anything.
“I’m really looking forward to going to the ball to see my artwork on the menus and posters - and buying a new dress.”
Mayor Thistlethwaite, who has been pursuing his passion for diving for over 40 years said: “It is a real privilege to dive down to things under the sea that most people will never see so I wanted the students to capture that in their artwork.
“Whitby also holds a lot of childhood memories for me, fishing with my father off the pier, and even now when I go back it still looks the same so I was delighted that so many of them managed to capture the spirit of such a special place.
“It was very difficult to pick just one winner and as the students did such a good job and there were so many fabulous entries I have decided to use 12 of the images for my calendar this year.”
All the student entries are currently on display in the foyer of Darlington College and will be auctioned for charity at the Mayors Ball.
Principal Tim Grant added: “Once again we are delighted to support the Mayors ball and the chosen charities.
“There is some incredible artistic talent in Darlington College and it is a great opportunity for our students to showcase their skills.”
E. C. Segar (8 December 1894 – 13 October 1938, USA) is widely regarded as having been one of the most influential and talented cartoonists of all time, among the first to combine humor with long-running adventures.
Around age 20, he moved to Chicago and met Richard F. Outcault (creator of ‘The Yellow Kid’), who introduced him to the “Chicago Herald”. On 12 March 1916, that paper published his first strip, ‘Charlie Chaplin’s Comedy Capers’. He published in Chicago through 1919 and then moved to New York City.
There, Segar went to work for King Features Syndicate. His most famous strip, ‘Thimble Theatre’, began in the “New York Journal” on 19 December 1919. Its lead characters were Olive Oyl, Castor Oyl, and Ham Gravy.
Nine years later, at the beginning of 1929, he introduced a sailor named Popeye in the feature. Popeye soon took over the storyline and became the main character. He is now a global pop-culture icon and in the 1970s the name of the feature was finally changed to ‘Popeye’.
In 1971, the National Cartoonists Society created the Elzie Segar Award for outstanding contributions to the profession.
Norwegian actress and dancer Lillebil Ibsen (1899-1989) started her career as a young talented dancer and later became one of Norway's most distinguished stage actresses ever. As Lillebil Christensen, she acted in a few European silent films by major directors.
Lillebil Ibsen was born Sofie Parelius Monrad Krohn in 1899 in Öre Aker (Christiania, now Oslo), Norway. She was the daughter of engineer Georg Monrad Krohn and actress Gyda Andersen (Gyda Monrad Krohn). Later on, her mother married Halfdan Christensen, the managing director of Nationaltheatret in Oslo, the national theatre stage in Norway. Lillebil received ballet training from her mother, who was a professional choreographer and ballet instructor. At the age of ten, she made her debut as a dancer at Nationaltheatret in the ballet pantomime 'Prinsessen på erten' (1911), directed by her mother. It was an adaptation of the fairytale 'The Princess and the Pea' by Hans Christian Andersen. Over the next few years, ‘Madame Lillebil’ had an adventurous career abroad. She studied ballet with Hans Beck in Copenhagen, and later with Russian choreographer Mikhail Fokine in Paris. In 1912, she went on a music tour to Berlin with her mother and conductor Johan Halvorsen. Later, she would also dance to Halvorsen's 'Danse visionaire', in 'Krokodilletaarer' (1914) and 'Dukken' (1915), the Norwegian version of 'Coppélia' by Léo Delibes. Her sensitive and dramatic dancing made her famous far beyond Norway. She made her debut as a stage actress in 'Den uskikkelige Lille princesses' (The Naughty Little Princess). When she was sixteen years old, German stage director Max Reinhardt engaged her as prima ballerina ‘Lillebil Christensen’ for the theatres he managed. From 1915 to 1918, Lillebil played leading roles in Reinhardt's pantomimes 'Die Schäferin', 'Lillebils Hochzeitsreise', 'Prima Ballerina', 'Sumurun' and 'Die grüne Flöte' (The Green Flute). In Berlin, Lillebil Christensen made her film debut with a supporting role in E. A. Dupont's crime story Europa postlagernd/Europe Mail Storage (Ewald André Dupont, 1918) starring Max Landa and Lu Synd. In 1919, she married writer-director Tancred Ibsen, the grandson of both Henrik Ibsen and Nobel laureate Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson. The young couple travelled through Europe. Lillebil played one of the two leading female roles in the Swedish film drama Sången om den eldröda blomman/Song of the Scarlet Flower (Mauritz Stiller, 1919), with Lars Hanson. It was a huge success. A year later, the Danish director Urban Gad brought her back to Berlin to play the central role of Paris dancer Eva Sorel alongside Conrad Veidt and Fritz Kortner in the two-part film Christian Wahnschaffe (Urban Gad, 1920-1921). She also appeared in the Norwegian film Pan (Harald Schwenzen, 1922) with Gerd Egede Nissen, based on a novel by Knut Hamsun. In 1921, her son Tancred was born and in 1923, the family settled permanently in Norway. She was engaged by the Centralteatret, first for the pantomime 'Scaramouche' (1923) with music by Jean Sibelius, then for the play 'Kameliadamen', a production of Alexandre Dumas fils' 'The Lady of the Camellias', and a year later Ibsen appeared in the revue theatre Chat Noir. Her songs, dances and parodies became very popular and she gave guest performances in London, Paris, Stockholm and Copenhagen.
From 1928 to 1956, Lillebil Ibsen was a member of the ensemble at Oslo's Det Nye Teater (The New Theatre). She played classical comedy roles as well as a series of Ibsen characters, such as Nora in 'Nora or A Doll's House' or Mrs Alving in 'Ghosts'. She became one of Norway's most distinguished stage actresses ever. In 1931, Tancred Ibsen directed Norway's first feature-length sound film, the comedy Den store barnedåpen/The Great Christening (Tancred Ibsen, 1931). Lillebil did not appear in this film but she starred in her husband's experimental comedy Op med hodet/Cheer Up! (Tancred Ibsen, 1934). The title of the film is a reference to the opening line of a poem in Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson's novel 'En glad Gut' (A Happy Boy). She also appeared in the Swedish melodrama Lika inför lagen (Gustaf Bergman, 1931) with Karin Swanström and Unno Hennbing. It was an alternative language version of the Paramount production Manslaughter (George Abbott, 1930) and was filmed as Les Studios Paramount in Joinville-le-Pont, France. Through the 1930s. Tancred Ibsen would 'dominate the Norwegian film industry. During the Occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany, Tancred was arrested in 1943. He was imprisoned in Schildberg and then Luckenwalde until the camp was liberated. Lillebil and Tancred Christensen co-directed the film Et spøkelse forelsker seg/A ghost falls in love (1946) starring Per Aabel. She also acted in a few more films, including the Swedish mystery Mannekäng i rött/Mannequin in Red (Arne Mattsson, 1958) with Anita Björk, where she played a notable supporting role as a fashion house mogul. This popular film is part of the Hillman-thriller series, directed by Arne Mattsson and written by Folke Mellvig. The cult series contains five mysteries with the name of a colour in the title. In 1979, she reunited with director Mattson for her final film, Somewhere, Sometime
(Arne Mattson, 1979). From 1956 to 1969, Lillebil was a permanent member of Oslo's Nationaltheatret. She appeared in many classic plays by G.B. Shaw, Moliére, Henrik Ibsen and William Shakespeare. She enjoyed particular success in Friedrich Dürrenmatt's revenge drama 'Der Besuch der alten Dame' (The Visit of the Old Lady, 1957) and Edward Albee's 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?' (1964). She also successfully played the part of Abby Brewster in Joseph Kesselring's comedy 'Arsenic and Old Lace' (1968). In 1961, she received a Critics' Award for her role as Mrs Patrick Campbell in Jerome Kilty's two-person play 'Dear Liar' with Per Aabel. She played 'Mrs. Pat' more than 300 times in Norway and neighbouring countries since its premiere in 1961, both on stage and in radio and television theatre versions. She published her autobiography 'Det begynte med dansen' (It began with the dance) in 1961. Ibsen was decorated Commander of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav in 1969. When Ibsen celebrated his seventieth anniversary as a performing artist in 1981, she once again played Mrs Pat in 'Dear Liar'. In 1983, she received the Karl Gerhards Hederspris, a Scandinavian art award. Lillebil Ibsen died in Oslo in 1989 aged 90. She was married to Tancred Ibsen from 1919 till his death in 1978. Their son Tancred Ibsen Jr. (1921-2015), was a Norwegian diplomat. Tancred and Lillebil Ibsen are buried at Vår Frelsers gravlund, Oslo.
This is probably the most serendipitous encounter I have experienced during my Strangers Project.
I was sitting in a coffee shop with a friend and we were discussing the movie Philomena which I had recently seen. This is a 2013 movie starring Judy Dench and Steve Coogan. It is the story of a young Irish Catholic girl who has a child out of wedlock and her story as a woman over 50 years later who along with a BBC corespondent attempt to find her son. The story is based on the Martin Sixsmith book, The Lost Child Of Philomena Lee.
The story encompasses many facets of how teen pregnancy was viewed years ago including, family shame, economic circumstances, religious beliefs etc. The Catholic Church and their view of these events and their part in the adoption process.
www.philomenamovie.com
During this conversation a woman sitting nearby, apologized for interrupting and asked if we minded if she "made a comment?"
'That is my story, I was adopted under similar circumstances"
Meet Shirley:
Shirley was born in Halifax Nova Scotia, her mother was English and her father was Syrian, Shirley was adopted by a French Canadian Family, through the Catholic Church in Nova Scotia. Like in Philomena, Shirley's mother did not voluntarily put her up for adoption, but was coerced for various reasons to give up her child.
This turn of events has had a significant effect on Shirley and when she watched the movie Philomena the parallels to her own life experiences were profound.
Shirley is an active member of Parent Finders Ottawa, which is part of Parent Finders Canada. She was fortunate to have found her birth mother, helping her to put some missing pieces into her life.
www.parentfindersottawa.ca
As it happens Shirley is a very talented Visual Artist/Designer who has lived in both Montreal and Ottawa. She has a Visual Arts Diploma from Dawson College in Montreal, Shirley also holds a Diploma in Museum Studies from Algonquin College in Ottawa. She has worked as a museum exhibit designer and curator. Her CV is extensive.
Shirley was in the coffee shop to meet her writer friend Seymour Hamilton. He was bringing in his newly published illustrated novel, The Laughing Princess, which Shirley had illustrated. Shirley showed me a copy of the book and truly the illustrations were magnificent.
When Shirley shared her story I was gobsmacked, what were the odds of this encounter happening?
I explained my 100 Strangers Project to Shirley and she readily agreed to participate.
I have only scratched the surface of this woman's talents, I would suggest you take a look at her website at:
www.artspace59.com
Thank you Shirley for being so generous with your time I'm sure we could have talked all afternoon. I wish you much success in your career.
