Caught this guy riding down Nicollet Mall one day. I fortunately had my camera with me, so i chased him (on foot) for a block as i pulled it out of my bag and then snapped this shot just as the light turned green.

Mr. Agoo is definitely one of the most talented men I've ever met.

On Friday 6th August a brass ensemble comprised of recent students of the Oldham Music Centre represented the borough’s talented musical youth, performing at a variety of locations as part of the Lake District Summer Music Festival.

The group consisted of trumpets, horn, trombones and tuba and featured players that have gone on from the Music Centre to continue their instrumental studies at the UK’s premier conservatoires and universities These include The Royal Academy of Music in London (James Kelly & Benjamin Hartnell-Booth), The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (James Slater), The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (Adam Saville), The Royal Northern College of Music (Patrick Cooke & Laurie Wood), Chetham’s School (Georgia Payne).

This very special ensemble, brought together especially for the Festival, gave three performances to appreciative audiences as part of a whistle-stop, one day tour that took in Grange-over-Sands as well as two performances in Bowness-on-Windermere. A performance at the National Trust’s Sizergh Castle was also scheduled but had to be cancelled at the last minute due to a Covid outbreak.

Lake District Summer Music Festival Director, Stephen Threlfall said,

‘I am personally delighted to have the Oldham Music Centre Brass Ensemble with us on their mini-tour of the Lakes as part of our festival. Its highly appropriate that some of the lovely bandstands and venues form part of this tour and I hope that this will be the first of many visits. Thanks to the Oldham Music Centre musicians and team for making this possible’.

Returning musician, trumpet player, James Kelly said,

‘It is good to be back playing with my Music Centre friends. The Oldham Music Centre fired my love of music and gave me the springboard to start my musical career’

Former principal cornet of the Oldham Youth Brass Band, Georgia Payne, said,

‘A year without any ensemble playing has been really strange and it’s nice to be back collaborating with other musicians’

Oldham Council’s Director of Music, Gerard Booth, said,

‘After such a turbulent couple of years we were delighted to be given the opportunity to take part in this prestigious event. Bringing back such talented musicians from the Music Centre’s recent past seemed like an ideal way to participate on very little rehearsal and I am so pleased with the way these fantastic young musicians have immediately gelled into a really polished ensemble. It’s great to see how they have developed musically and the fine performers that they have all developed into thanks to the start they received here in Oldham.’

Joan Schenkar's The Talented Miss Highsmith, a book I brought back to the library only partly read. I haven't read much of Highsmith since the 70s, when I read just about everything she put out. I did see Matt Damon and Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Talented Mr. Ripley, which was based on one of her books -- and whose title is the obvious inspiration for the one on this book.

Why did I not finish reading it? It was too granular -- way more daughter-to-mother, mother-to-daughter, lover-to-lover, and where-she-lived-next detail than I could find interesting. I might go back to it someday, but not soon.

A trio of musicians playing in downtown Asheville. Was dining at a local restaurant al fresco and listening to them. They're really talented. Music was better than the food!

I tend to wear a lot of black but today I felt like colour. I think I looked pretty cool in my favourite skirt and this lovely torquoise ... perhaps I should wear colours more often :)
