Every year, disasters caused by weather, climate and water-related hazards impact on communities around the world, leading to loss of human life, destruction of social and economic infrastructure and degradation of already fragile ecosystems. Statistics from the Center for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) at the university of Leuven, Belgium, reveal that from 1992-2001, about 90% of natural disasters were meteorological or hydrological in origin; the resulting economic losses were estimated at $446bn, or about 65% of all damage caused by natural disasters.

Moscow metro system is famous for its art, murals, mosaics, and ornate chandeliers. It started operation in 1935 and immediately became the centerpiece of the transportation system. More than that it was a Stalinist device to awe and reward the populace, and give them an appreciation of Soviet realist art. It became the prototype for future Soviet large-scale technologies. Lazar Kaganovich was in charge; he designed the subway so that citizens would absorb the values and ethos of Stalinist civilization as they rode. The artwork of the 13 original stations became nationally and internationally famous. For example, the Sverdlov Square subway station featured porcelain bas-reliefs depicting the daily life of the Soviet peoples, and the bas-reliefs at the Dynamo Stadium sports complex glorified sports and the physical prowess of the powerful new "Homo Sovieticus." (Soviet man).

The metro was touted as the symbol of the new social order—a sort of Communist cathedral of engineering modernity. Soviet workers did the labor and the art work, but the main engineering designs, routes, and construction plans were handled by specialists recruited from the London Underground. The Britons called for tunnelling instead of the "cut-and-cover" technique, the use of escalators instead of lifts, and designed the routes and the rolling stock. The paranoia of Stalin and the NKVD was evident when the secret police arrested numerous British engineers for espionage—that is for gaining an in-depth knowledge of the city's physical layout. Engineers for the Metropolitan Vickers Electrical Company were given a show trial and deported in 1933, ending the role of British business in the USSR.

Today, the Moscow Metro comprises twelve lines, mostly underground with a total of 203 stations. The Metro is one of the deepest subway systems in the world.

Esbern Snares TOUR, MAY 29 2014

May 29 SALTO Systems Nordic Cycling was honored to participate in the Esben Snares Tour. This year the Esben Snares Tour saw an all-time high record of participants: 480 riders in total, of whom 38 represented SALTO! As you can see from our pictures, we had a great time, with great people, in great weather, and for a great purpose. Important to take notice of in this respect is also the fact that our Kilometer Bank now can proudly add 5.300 kilometers (of which 28 did the full Tour of 150 kilometers and 10 did 110 kilometers round). Kilometers will certainly be added to our ongoing contributions to the handicapped and the severely ill! — Kalundborg, Denmark.

This shot of the underside of Atlantis perhaps illustrates one of the reasons why the shuttle never quite lived up to its billing as a truly inexpensive and re-usable space vehicle. Yes, it was re-usable, but prior to being sent back to space, all the heat resistant tiles needed inspecting - a sizeable job when there are over 24,000 of them!
