A mixture of simple syrup (2 cups organic sugar and 1 cup water simmered under cover for 5 minutes and cooled) and Rum is liberately brushed (one would say soaked) onto the cake layers.
Note: I did not use the top crust of the genoise for this cake (had it toasted with jam and a cup of tea later...)
I found this antique American Pressed Pattern Glass syrup pitcher the other day at my favorite thrift shop...paid one dollar for it. It is 'incomplete' being the metal screw on pouring lid is missing. The lids are normally a combination of pot and tin metals and are 'quadruple silver plated'. This glass pitcher would turn violet to purple in color if left outdoors exposed to the sun's ultraviolet rays overtime because it was made with lead and manganese. The standard date is 1914 and before regards American pattern glass that has these two contents in manufacturing.

Maple Syrup is poured out onto fresh snow and allowed to cool. The thick and sticky substance is then rolled around a stick and eaten as candy.
It takes 45 Liters of sap to produce one single Liter of Maple Syrup. Each Maple Tree produces about an average of 45 Liters of sap a year.
Due to popular demand pancakes were on the menu for pudding again today. It may be Ash Wednesday but sssh! don't tell.

Pomegranate Vinegar - 3 half pints
Spiced Whole Kumquat Preserves
Makes 4 Pints (approximately)
4 quarts Kumquats
2 ¼ cups Water
¾ cup White Vinegar
3 cups Sugar
2 Cinnamon Sticks (broken in half)
1 ½ tbsp of Whole Allspice
1 ½ tbsp of Whole Coves
1. Wash and remove stems from kumquats. Cut ½ inch slits at 90° angles on blossom end.
2. Place kumquats into a pot, cover with water, and simmer over medium heat for 10 minutes or until tender. Drain.
3. In a large pot, combine 2 ¼ cups of water with vinegar, sugar, cinnamon sticks, allspice, and cloves. Heat until boiling over medium high heat. Reduce heat, and boil gently for 5 minutes.
4. Add kumquats to syrup, simmer covered for 20 minutes. Turn burner off, and allow kumquats to cool (keep covered) for 10-15 minutes. Kumquats should now be translucent.
5. Place hot fruit in jars (make sure to get a piece of cinnamon in each jar along with the other spices), fill with hot syrup, check for trapped air, and leave ¼ inch headspace in jars. Can in a hot water bath canner as normal. Process pint jars for 15 minutes.

Never been that far down the DLR before!
Shot through a fairly dirty train window, and then cropped somewhat - less than 4% of original image.
My friend Amy invited me out to enjoy a day of maple syrup making. We boiled and boiled. It was very tasty....but freezing cold.
first time i made them! my grand mother sells her home made bread and cookies on markets and these are still some of my favorite biscuits ever.
to make them you need
200 grams margarine
200 grams sugar
250 grams wheat flour
1 dl chopped almond
2 table spoons syrup
2 tea spoons baking soda
1 table spoon vanilla sugar
mix margarine and sugar first, then add all the other ingredients. the dough is quite sticky but that's how it should be. make long rolls about as thick as a finger, and place them on a cookie sheet with enough space between, they float out! place in oven for 12-15 minutes in 175 degrees celsius. when slightly brown, take them out and cut into sticks. wait for them to cool.
