It used to be that you could only get Autocrat Coffee Syrup, now there are artisanal makers. This is a Rhode Island specialty, used on ice cream, to make coffee milks, and milk shakes. We haven't tried it yet.

This syrup now comes in all sorts of containers - but I always buy the traditional tins that I remember from my childhood.

KCS 4586 South has just arrived in Pittsburg, KS for a crew change. This train would have merited an extended chase but power problems meant a long stop in Pittsburg for the hostlers to juggle the leader and add a rear DPU. That 4004 in the background would lead this train south as darkness fell.

This syrup train originated on the IAIS at Cedar Rapids, IA and was forwarded to the KCS at KC via the DM&E from the Quad Cities.

Maryland doesn’t create much maple syrup. While Vermont creates up to 2 million gallons a year, Maryland comes in with a total of 0 gallons. But that doesn’t stop Brookside Gardens from creating a little bit from their 5 sugar maple trees. We even got to taste a little of what they’d produced by dipping a popsicle stick in this little jar of it.
