Good thing I brought my own syrup to Pancake Rocks.

This one almost felt like work. Numerous shots, and yet, this was the best I could get.

Nothing beats REAL maple syrup. This is a sampling of the fruits of my husband's labor. The bottle in front is one of the last from last year's season. The other two bottles are part of this year's run. Canned in recycled Snapple bottles.

first time i made my granny's syrup sticks. my grand mother sells her home made bread and cookies on markets and these are still some of my favorite biscuits ever.

 

to make them you need

 

200 grams margarine

200 grams sugar

250 grams wheat flour

1 dl chopped almond

2 table spoons syrup

2 tea spoons baking soda

1 table spoon vanilla sugar

 

mix margarine and sugar first, then add all the other ingredients. the dough is quite sticky but that's how it should be. make long rolls about as thick as a finger, and place them on a cookie sheet with enough space between, they float out! place in oven for 12-15 minutes in 175 degrees celsius. when slightly brown, take them out and cut into sticks. wait for them to cool.

An old school method of testing the syrup to see if it's ready, was demonstrated by the ranger. A twig is bent into a loop (like a bubble wand) then dipped into the syrup. If it sticks and spreads across the loop, it's ready to bottle.

Only after I finished shooting and cleaning up did I realize that the ISO was set way too high, thus the grainy quality... Ah well, still tasted great.

My Dad's been making maple syrup almost every year since I can remember. I swear it tastes different (and better) than any other syrup around. :)

I remember this stuff from when I was little, though I do not remember the word 'PERTUSSIN' on the side of the bottle. This bottle is slightly deformed by a lump on the other side which has a hole in it (see insert) Was this for inserting a straw?

My first gallon of maple syrup this year

Maple syrup reduced over the fire is called Kettle syrup. Ours is delicious, it has a slight smoky taste.

I might need to make a return trip soon for this home made syrup given to me by Geoff Gevalt

I canned up my batch of elderberry syrup for the year. We generally eat this mixed with homemade yogurt or in tea. Elderberries grow wild all over the place around here, make sure you are positive on your identification so you don't accidentally harvest ink berries.
