Since December 15, 2013, the violence which broke out in South Sudan has forced thousands of South Sudanese to flee their homes and seek refuge to neighbouring countries including Ethiopia. The total number of South Sudanese refugees who have entered to Ethiopia since the outbreak of the conflict in mid-December 2013 is now over 300,090 individuals and there are also 32,880 refugees who are residing within the host community (UNHCR: 17 February 2017).The number will also continue to increase since there are still new influxes on daily basis.

Teignmouth Grand Pier old supports

THE BIRTH OF TEIGNMOUTH PIER.

The Pier at Teignmouth was built in 1865 by an engineering consultant from London, called Joseph Wilson.

As a boy, Joseph William Wilson yearned to be an engineer, much to his fathers disapproval, he’d always hoped that he would follow the family tradition and take up a clerical post. After his sons initial schooling as a cleric, Joseph’s’ father was eventually persuaded to send him, as an apprentice, to work under his cousins tutelage in Fox and Henderson, an engineering firm. Later on in his career he acted as an assistant engineer for the firm, on the construction of Crystal Palace, London. He had an inventive mind, and introduced many improvements to the machinery used on the construction. When he left there, he set up in partnership with his brother-in-law and opened The Oldbury Engineering Works. Then, due to ill health, he left Oldbury and set up as a Consulting Engineer in Banbury, where he and his son carried out the construction of Teignmouth Pier. Joseph Wilson died in 1898.

CONSTRUCTION

The Pier is constructed of cast-iron screw piles, these are literally screwed into the sand with a large hexagon on the pile. They are screwed down to the clay level or infact until refusal. Any new steel piling has been driven 80ft right to bedrock. The deck is open and made up of wood from the Yellow Balou, a hard wood from Borneo. The deck was only recently renewed and will last for another 25 years, withstanding the continuous assault from the sea.

A total of 89 piers were built in England & Wales between 1814 and 1910. Only 50 of the original piers are still standing, however, some of those no longer function as a pier. They are forgotten structures pointing out to sea, reminders of another era. Those of us who like to be reminded of days gone by, can still take a stroll out on the few remaining, safe and attractive piers.

Although Teignmouth Pier has undergone many changes in its history, it is one of only two piers left on the South West coast of England, and that is something, Teignmouth, Devon and the English Heritage should be proud of.

VICTORIANS.

Teignmouth became a popular seaside destination in 1817, when the Victorians frequented coastal resorts in favour of the “big smoke” cities they lived and worked in. Doctors used to prescribe a get away for their ails and some even advised their patients to drink the sea water! It was believed to have healing properties.

Initially, Teignmouth Pier was a landing stage. It’s purpose was to enable steam boat passengers to get to the shore. The Victorians used to enjoy their stroll along the promenade, but for some the pull of the sea was too much, so they would walk out to the end of the Pier and look at the view. They could imagine being on board a ship, with the added advantage of a stable footing. But as the jetty was used more and more frequently for promenading, the need for entertainment did not go un-noticed. Some entrepreneurs saw the potential of a captive audience and decided to build on the jetty, giving refreshments and other amusements. For instance the old machine “what the Butler saw” was one of the first to be installed on the Pier.

During the 2nd World War, a 60 foot section of deck was removed so that the Germans could not breach us if they invaded England. Nearly all the piers on the East and South coasts were dealt with in the same way.

Compensation was paid out for replacement of that section but many remained in that state for a considerable period. Our own wasn’t brought to its original width until the early 1960’s.

KABUL, Afghanistan – Army Brig. Gen. Francisco Espaillat, commanding general, 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), an Army Reserve unit headquartered in Orlando, Fla., traveled to various locations throughout Afghanistan to visit Soldiers and civilians from the 143d ESC. In his travels Espaillat met with leaders from the 207th Regional Support Group, a unit headquartered in Ft. Jackson, S.C. and aligned under the 143d ESC when not forward deployed. Members from both the 143d ESC and 207th RSG provided Espaillat a mission overview while sharing experiences and posing for photos.

Many members of the 1st Theater Sustainment Command serving in the New Kabul Compound were originally assigned to the 143d ESC. Espaillat met with each section to discuss an array of topics and provide guidance to the Soldiers.

The 143d ESC and 207th RSG are currently deployed throughout Central Command’s area of responsibility in direct support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Both units are scheduled to redeploy later this spring.

Area Support Group Afghanistan (ASG-A) personnel were among more than 500 participants in the annual Army Ten-Miler shadow run at Bagram Airfield Oct. 4. Shadow runs are held at various locations throughout the Combined Joint Operations Area Afghanistan and in locations throughout the globe. The race is held annually in Washington, D.C., in October. Beginning as a way to promote the Army, build esprit de corps, support physical fitness, the Army Ten-Miler began with nearly 14,000 participants in 1985 and has capped at 35,000 in recent years. It is the second largest ten-mile race in the United States and the third largest ten-mile race in the world. The race generally sells out in less than 12 hours. More than a quarter million people have participated since its inception.

Both Anna and Elsa are now fully deboxed. They are posed standing side by side, supported by the included doll stands. Their skirts are in the 'normal' closed position.

Review of Anna

Anna is in her coronation gown, with a velvet black bodice and green skirt. The bodice is form fitting, with multicolored embroidery and jewels, with a dark green satin shoulder straps. Her outer skirt is made of panels of yellow green embroidered and jeweled satin alternating with plain dark green satin panels, the pattern repeating ten times. The lighter green panels are tacked together with plastic T-tabs, so we don't see the full extent of the skirt. When the sections are freed, the skirt can expand to a full semicircle. Under the skirt is a full length yellow green satin slip, with a wide lacy hem. Under that is a 3/4 length stiff tulle petticoat. Under that are yellow green satin knee-length bloomers. Finally under that are full length stockings or leggings. Anna is certainly dressed for cold weather. Her legs are wired to the doll stand at the ankles and knees. Her feet are posable, and she is wearing black flats, which is rather disappointing given the gorgeous and unique shoes that Elsa is wearing. She is wearing a necklace, with the pendant stuck to her chest.

Her face is very movie accurate. She has a round face, with huge blue green eyes, long gently curving rooted eyelashes, thin dark brown eyebrows. She has a small pointy nose, thin dark pink lips in a slight smirk, and large round ears. She has orange freckles all over her face, extending down to her neck, shoulders and chest, and even on her upper back. She has a very pale complexion, but her sister Elsa is much, much paler. Her body is the usual LE Princess body, with full articulation in her arms and legs, and an upper torso joint. Her rusty red hair is fashioned into a large bun in the back of her head, with a spiraling braid around a small bun in the middle, out of which comes several thin ponytails, including two very skinny braids, and also several satin ribbons. In front are long curly bangs, and a tight flat braid over it. There is a streak of white hair from her right side, and ending in one of the thin pony tails hanging off the small bun.

Anna is very beautiful and elegant, very much a Disney Princess.

Review of Elsa

Elsa is very elegant and powerful looking in her Snow Queen gown. It consists of a light blue green satin full length dress, and a oversized blue green sheer organza cape, which is permanently sewn to the top of the dress. The dress has rectangular clear crystals covering the bodice, and round clear gems scattered throughout her floor length skirt, iwth a long slit down the front right side. The back of the dress ends in a long circular tail. The dress is fully lined with dark blue satin. The full length sleeves are sheer blue organza decorated with blue jewels, as is the collar. The cape is truly spectacular. It can wrap around the front to hide the skirt, or be extended to the sides and the back. It is circular, and trails a considerable distance behind her. It is double layered sheer blue green organza, with a pearly sheen, and is quite flexible, unlike the the organza cape of the Classic Elsa, which is stiffened by all the glitter glued to the cape. However, it is not as sheer as the Classic Elsa's cape, as it is two layered, as opposed to the single layer organza capes of Classic Elsa, and also Singing Elsa. The cape is covered in embroidered ice and snowflake patterns, with clear round crystals placed as part of the patterns. There is no glitter used anywhere on Elsa's outfit, unlike the Classic and Singing Elsa dolls.

Elsa has unique shoes. They are iridescent blue high heeled shoes with a snowflake design in the front and back. They have a metallic look to them, even though they are plastic. She also bucks the trend of fully articulated legs in the Limited Edition dolls, by having fixed angled feet. She looks much more elegant with fixed feet in the high heels.

Elsa is a very accurate depiction of the movie character. She has a very striking angular face with pronounced cheekbones, and large bright blue eyes that are glancing to her righ. She has an extremely pale complexion with a purplish tint, and a pearly iridescent sheen to her skin, which is similar to that of the organza gown. She has an elfin look to her face, although her ears are normally sized and shaped, and considerably smaller than Anna's. She has a few freckles across her cheeks, and a solitary freckle on her forehead. She has long gently curving rooted eyelashes, elaborate eyeshadow above her eyes, small thin eyelashes below her eyes (and none above). She has dark heavily applied rouge on her cheeks right below her eyes. This gives her a darker, more serious look than the other Elsa dolls, and very different than Anna's cheerful, carefree look. She has thin blood red lips, in a slight smile. Her body has the same articulation as Anna's, except for the lack of ankle joints, and of course her entire body has the same pearly pale blue skin as her face. She has long light blonde hair that is fashioned into a long braided pony tail, and long flat curves over her head. There is a single side curl over her left forehead, and short sideburns. There are three snowflake shaped crystal hair ornaments in her hair.

Elsa is a truly beautiful and unique doll, and represents the Snow Queen character very well, with a confident, dark look, otherworldly features, and a spectacular gown.

Purchase Details

First look at the Harrods special edition of the Disney Store's Limited Edition Anna and Elsa Doll Set. I purchased it through a reseller, as it was only sold at the Harrods London store. It was released on November 1, 2013, in an edition of 100. The retail cost is more than four times that of the separately sold LE Anna and Elsa dolls (which will be released worldwide on November 20, 2013, in an edition size of 2500). My set is #39 of 100, and I received it on November 11, 2013.

They are 17'' fully articulated dolls, with doll stands and certificated of authenticity. Anna is in her coronation gown, Elsa is in her Snow Queen gown. As might be expected, the dolls are considerably different in details than the ''regular'' limited edition dolls. In particular there is considerably more crystals on the outfits, and embroidered snowflakes completely cover the outer gown (cape) of Elsa.

National Guard Soldiers and Airmen from the D.C.-based 33rd Civil Support Team and the Fort Pickett-based 34th Civil Support Team trained together April 7, 2015, at the Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue Training Site, Lorton, Va. The two-day exercise brought together the two teams as well as firefighters from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. Both units can identify chemical, biological, and radiological substances, assess current and projected consequences, advise an incident commander on response measures, and assist with requests for additional state support. The CSTs are federally resourced, trained and sustained and operates under the control of state leadership. The Adjutant General of each state or territory may employ the CST to support the state response under the direction of the governor or to support another state’s response under a supported governor. The rotating wafer support maintains flatness and position of 4", 6", 8", 10", 12", and 13.625" diameter wafers in order to achieve contamination-free contact angle readings while preserving flatness. Each wafer support is hand lapped to a high-tolerance. The support incorporates a rotating stage plate which is graduated in 1° increments with displacement holes for creating the appropriate suction. The wafer support mounts directly to the leveling stage of the Contact Angle Goniometer. Model 400 supports and includes an 8" wafer support (and other sizes can be added). Models 190, 200, 250, and 290 support the 4" wafer support only. Larger supports may require an upgrade kit which will extend the focal length of the camera and extend the microsyringe fixture. We offer kits which include all of the necessary parts.

In support of the Corps STEM initiative, four Buffalo District team members put on a "Flash Training" event for teachers of Mullen Elementary School, Tonawanda, NY. The training was a one-hour program that involved each team members developing a simple science activity, demonstrating the activity to the teachers and explaining the scientific theory behind the activity. The purpose of the training was to save the teachers time in researching and experimenting with STEM activities for the classroom and instead, create and bring an activity to the teachers so they could see it first-hand and learn how to present the activity in the classroom. The "flash" portion of the training referred to the concept of demonstrating an activity "in a flash" and moving the teachers onto the next demonstration. Four rounds of "flash training" were held for approximately 30 faculty and staff members of the school.

The four science activities demonstrated were: Flower Pressing, Wetlands Demonstration, Making Silly Putty and What is a Glacier. Teachers rotated through the different activities and took away with them the theory behind the activity, a description of how to utilize the activity for that grade level, and a handout with instructions and supply lists.
