Built at Cockatoo Island Dockyard in Sydney, Australia, during the 1980s, she is the only ship of the class to be constructed outside of France, and the only one to originally not serve in the Marine Nationale (French Navy). The ship was part of the Australian contribution to the 1991 Gulf War, and was deployed to East Timor in response to incidents in 1999 and 2006. The ship was fitted with a double hull during the first half of 2011, to meet International Maritime Organisation standards.

This weekend, the students of DePauw University will unite with a tremendous display of campus support for the 2005 Special Olympics Indiana Women's State Basketball Tournament. Thirty-eight Special Olympics Indiana basketball teams will compete Saturday and Sunday, March 12 and 13 in state championship competition at the University's Lilly Physical Education and Recreation Center. The event takes place, in part, thanks to the support of the Finish Line® Youth Foundation.

"DePauw basically adopts this event and does the nuts and bolts to make it happen," said Scott Mingle, assistant director of sports management for Special Olympics Indiana. "The students do so much, from getting tables and special olympics logo.gifchairs in place to providing volunteers to run registration and serve as court captains, timekeepers, scorers and announcers. They house Special Olympics athletes, throw parties for the teams, and ensure that the athletes experience this as a big-time tournament."

Thirty-eight teams consisting of 382 players will compete Saturday and Sunday at the annual state championship -- the world's largest Special Olympics women's basketball tournament. Athletes range in age from nine to 61.

Tournament competition includes rounds of play in 10 divisions organized by team ability level. Prior to competing in the state tournament, all teams completed a required minimum of eight weeks of training and played at least two games within the Special Olympics Indiana basketball program. All state tournament games will play on the courts of the main gymnasium at the Lilly Center.

My initial reaction to these two Scottish fellas was to think how refreshing it was to have some music that was plain & simple. 2 acoustic guitars, 2 voices: nothing less, nothing more. No trying to be cool, no trying to be the next big thing. Just plain & simple. The downside of this however was that it got a bit boring. Actually I quite like 'cool' or 'quirky' or whatever else. Plus it seemed a shame that their lovely Scottish accents seemed to disappear when they were singing.

Josef Noldin (born November 25, 1888 in Salurn, † December 14, 1929 in Bolzano) was a lawyer and organizer of private schools in South Tyrol during the time of fascism.

Noldin passed at the Franciscan Gymnasium Bolzano in 1906 with distinction his school leaving examination and then studied after completion of his military service from 1907 in Innsbruck law. He became an active member of the AKV Tirolia in the cartel association of Catholic non-colour-bearing academic associations in Austria (ÖKV). In 1912 he graduated with distinction with the doctorate and became a lawyer. At the outbreak of the First World War Noldin was drafted immediately and wounded shortly afterwards. In 1915 he came into Russian captivity, which he had to spend in Siberia - most recently in Vladivostok - and lasted until 1920. In the winter of 1920, he was finally released and was able to return to his homeland, where he arrived in April 1921. He then settled down as a lawyer in Salurn.

When he was released from Vladivostok, Italian officers demanded a written declaration that he felt like an Italian citizen. This explanation denied Noldin.

As an opponent of Italianization, he was still close to its prohibition, a representative of the German Association.

When the German language was banned at the South Tyrolean schools in 1923, he organized private schools with canon Michael Gamper, who was also a member of the Innsbruck fraternity Tirolia, to enable German-language instruction in private homes. These schools were called "Catacomb Schools". When the teachers were arrested by the Italian police, Noldin defended them in court. Because of his support of these schools, he was sentenced in 1925 to prison and fines. In 1926, when a law was passed in Italy, according to which people could be arrested and exiled without a court order, Noldin was arrested in 1927 under this law and banished to the island of Lipari for five years.

In February 1928, the South Tyrol question and the banishment of Noldin was treated in Parliament in Vienna. Mussolini suggested that the exile of Noldin was justified because his behavior was "anti-fascist, that means, counterrevolutionary". The KV demanded several times, most recently at its representative meeting in July 1928 in Fulda, the release. Noldin, however, was released only on December 12, 1928 from exile and returned to Salurn, but had a professional and exit ban.

In the summer of 1928 Noldin had become infected with a malaria-like fever in the hot climate of Lipari, the Italian authorities forbade the departure for a cure. Noldin died as a result of this disease at just 41 years old. He was buried in Salurn, on his grave cross were allowed only his initials.

At the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of Noldin's death, Canon Gamper described him as the "martyred figure" of the Bozener Unterland.

Tomb of Josef Noldin in Salurn

In Tramin, Laives, Innsbruck and Vienna streets are named after Noldin. The Municipal Council of Salurn decided in 1988 to rename the street where Noldin's birthplace is located, from "Romstraße" to "Dr. Josef Noldinstraße ". The birthplace is now a youth hostel and serves to meet German and Italian youth.

The daughter Traudl Noldin († 1994) was married to the South Tyrolean politician Alfons Benedikter. His grandson Thomas Benedikter wrote in 2000 a book about Noldin ("I do not want grace, but right"). The book was filmed in 2012 by director Luis Walter, while Noldin was played by his grandson Rudi Benedikter.

Josef Noldin (* 25. November 1888 in Salurn; † 14.

The photo shows the tools I used to hold a 2x4 against the ceiling of my garage. I was attaching 2x4s to the ceiling to make it easier to hang things and brace things (like free-standing shelves).

The picture was taken part-way through the process of pressing the board to the ceiling. I was acting alone. Based on something I saw in a magazine, and heavily influenced by my make-it-as-complicated-as-possible philosophy, the method I used was this:

1. Mark location on ceiling for the 2x4 ceiling board (hereafter referred to as "ceiling board").

2. Nail two small string cradles to the ceiling near the ends of the proposed position of the ceiling board. The ceiling board will hang temporarily in these cradles.

3. Insert one end of the ceiling board into one cradle, then the other end into the other cradle. Result: the ceiling board is hanging in the two cradles about two inches (5cm) below the ceiling.

4. Place two clamps within easy reach of each end of the ceiling board. They will be used later.

5. Grab two other boards: a pre-cut board that is almost as long as the floor-to-ceiling distance and a short board. These, clamped together, will act as temporary supports for the ceiling board. Stand on a stool under one end of the ceiling board, holding the two supports together vertically.

6. Keeping the supports pressed together, move the short board upward as far as possible, elevating the end of the ceiling board. Clamp the two supports together. RESULT: the very end of the ceiling board is pressed against the ceiling. The other end of the ceiling board is still lying in its cradle.

7. Repeat the raising process at the other end of the ceiling board. RESULT: this end of the ceiling board is now pressed against the ceiling, but the other end is still a bit loose.

8. Return to the first end of the ceiling board, loosen the clamps, repeat the raising process, and re-clamp the supports. RESULT: this end of the hanging board is tight enough against the ceiling to require no more raising.

9. Return (again) to the second end and repeat the raising process there. RESULT: the ceiling board is pressed tightly enough against the ceiling to allow drilling of pilot holes for the screws that will attach the ceiling board to the ceiling.

10. Drill holes, install screws, remove the hanging cradles and supports.

The process is tedious to say the least. But it worked: I attached four 2x4s to the ceiling in this manner. After this work was finished I realized I could have simplified this process by using my stepladders as bases for holding the 2x4s in place. One can buy devices called "third hands" (often used by carpenters and drywall installers) to hold things in place, but I am too cheap to shell out $50 for a tool that gets little use.

I am in a rare fit of industriousness in the garage. That's why I've been inactive on Flickr lately. The goal is to create a better working environment on my side of the garage and enough additional storage space that we can park my wife's Jeep in the garage again.
