With the support of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Haiti received around 1.17 million doses of oral cholera vaccines as cases continue to rise in the country.

The vaccine (Euvichol) was provided by the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision (IGC), which manages the global cholera vaccine stockpile, following a request by Haiti’s Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP, its acronym in French).

Haiti’s vaccination campaign is set to initially target populations over the age of one year in Cite Soleil, Delmas, Tabarre, Carrefour and Port-au-Prince in the Ouest Department and Mirebalais in the Centre Department – areas in which most of the cholera cases have been reported, to date.

Real simple reporting

For the Global Day of Action people in all corners of the world came together to send out the message that it’s time for the banks to help sort out the financial mess that they caused by introducing a 0.05% tax on financial transactions (aka the Robin Hood Tax). This tiny tax could raise hundreds of billions to tackle poverty and climate change. And what a great, loud and colourful message it was that people in over 40 countries sent to European leaders.

The huge diversity of events, bringing together thousands of organisations, happened across five continents.Quite clearly, there is global support for this simple idea. We’ve got loads of photos and stories on our Posterous page.

It was a lot of fun but there is a serious message behind the antics. The reckless behaviour of the financial sector has a global impact. The economic crisis triggered by financial meltdown has pushed tens of millions of people around the world into poverty and jeopardised commitments to tackling climate change.

Where possible, TAO provides oxen for farmers to share for ploughing, as here as part of our first project in the northern Ugandan districts of Lira, Apac and Oyam. Even where not funded by our donors, farmers often group together to invest in oxen because of the great benefits they bring in allowing larger areas to be farmed and reducing labour costs.

KISSIMMEE, FLA. – Four Soldiers from Mission Support Element, 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), joined thousands of service members, veterans and their families who gathered at the Westgate Resort in Kissimmee for free food, live music and heartfelt fellowship during the second annual Military Appreciation Weekend Concert held May 5, 2018.

Westgate Resorts’ CEO David Siegel opened the property to more than 1,500 military families for a complimentary, three-night stay that culminated in a free concert that featured the Chris Weaver Band.

Alongside the complimentary concessions and children activities, the 143d ESC Soldiers set up and managed two static displays featuring one of the unit’s Humvees and Light Medium Tactical Vehicle. The vehicles attracted hundreds of children, dozens of young adults and even a few veterans who climbed aboard the driver’s seat, donned an Advanced Combat Helmet and put their hands on the steering wheel.

In addition to the dozens of pop, rock, country and R&B songs played by the Chris Weaver Band, the concert offered a military flair complete with the presentation of the colors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Command Post 4287, the singing of the national anthem by American Idol contestant Alyssa Raghu and a helicopter flyover conducted by the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

Among the long list of VIPs was Florida Gov. Rick Scott who shook hands and took pictures with the 143d ESC Soldiers.

The concert concluded with fireworks that illuminated the night sky, its colorful patterns bouncing off thousands of fluttering flags and smiling faces.

One year Fallujah – Supporting stabilization and reconstruction through addressing explosive hazards

Fallujah, 7 August 2017: “The city of Fallujah is slowly getting back to normal day by day and there is hope,” said Pehr Lodhammar, United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) Iraq Senior Programme Manager. Over a year ago, on 26 June 2016, Fallujah was retaken from Da’esh. Booby-traps and other improvised explosive devices (IEDs) where left behind causing victims among the returning civilians. Through survey, clearance and explosive hazard awareness campaigns, UNMAS supported stabilization and reconstruction efforts to enable the population to return to their homes safely.

Speaking for the local government in Falluja, Mayor Issa Modgen commented, “UNMAS contributed greatly to the clearance of infrastructure and making rehabilitation possible. All these sites are cleared from explosives now and provide services to the people of Fallujah.”

Awareness of potential explosive threats saves lives. UNMAS provided mine risk education sessions in IDP camps and Fallujah neighborhoods including Ramadi and Habbaniya to returning civilians, warning them of the explosive hazards. Through over 4,900 life saving risk education sessions through partners, UNMAS and partners reached over 127,000 beneficiaries of which 89,400 children and 19,200 women. A mother of a family who returned to Fallujah in 2016 used her new knowledge when she, upon return to her home, saw wires sticking out of the mud oven. Suspecting it could be an IED she warned her husband and children to leave the house, reported to explosive experts who could confirm that it was an IED placed inside the oven and later cleared the item.

UNMAS responded with security risk assessment missions into the city starting July 2016 with follow up survey and clearance in August 2016. In the last year UNMAS conducted 263 tasks in Fallujah working on water points, power plants, sewage sites, schools and healthcare facilities.

One of the tasks was the General Hospital in Fallujah. Nine operating theaters where destroyed during Da’esh occupation. After UNMAS conducted survey, reconstruction of the hospital buildings could start and staff could return in September 2016. The hospital is now functional again with 300 beds and 900 staff of which 65 specialist doctors and 30 resident doctors. The hospital in Fallujah serves a community of over 800,000 people. An average of 10,000 people a month receive treatment including major surgery.

In Fallujah UNMAS cleared 5,247,655 sqm over the last year removing 313 IEDs and 613 Explosive Remnants of War (ERW). Through this UNMAS is enabling humanitarian assistance and stabilization activities to take place so that key infrastructure, schools, health care centers and roads can be restored.

The work of UNMAS in Fallujah was made possible through the generous support from Australia, Denmark, Estonia, the European Union, Finland, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
