Support Our Paras, Old Sarum Airfield, Wiltshire

One of my dear friends is battling breast cancer right now, and so we at work have been trying to show our support and to cheer her up with her favorite things (which are the color purple and butterflies).

So, first we made her a mobile, where each person who wanted to made a butterfly, and I made the mobile and put everything together.

It was hanging in her cubicle while she went through chemo therapy, and she said it really helped through those nauseous days when she needed a bit more motivation.

Then her dog suddenly developed tumors and died, so we made her a butterfly with her dog's portrait, which went into her cubicle, as well.

Right before Lori's surgery, my supervisor had an idea, which I made into reality ^_^

I made a cocoon, with a butterfly (which my supervisor made) inside. And everyone who wanted to in the department wrote notes for our friend, which I folded and attached to the cocoon. Lori took it home to read the notes, but is not allowed to open the cocoon itself until she comes back (then the butterfly can come out).

This is the shot of everything on Lori's last day before her surgery. As I'm thinking of her, I decided to share this shot, so maybe if there is someone in your life who is going through something hard like this, it can give you an idea on cheering them up through little things like these.

Soldiers and Airmen of the Virginia National Guard’s Fort Pickett-based 34th Civil Support Team conduct a joint hazardous material response exercise at James Madison University with JMU Police, Harrisonburg Fire Department and Harrisonburg Rescue Squad May 27, 2015, in Harrisonburg, Va. The mission of the 34th CST is to support first responders in potential biological, chemical, nuclear, radiological and explosive incidents, and the exercise at JMU provided an opportunity for the team to train with area first responders and raise awareness of their capabilities. In the exercise scenario, multiple students and teachers reported signs and symptoms believed to be caused by an unknown hazardous material and the 34th CST was brought in to assist the locality with the incident. Members of the team searched room to room in an empty dormitory for a possible source as well as provided mission command and communications assistance to the incident commander. The 34th CST can identify chemical, biological, and radiological substances, assess current and projected consequences, advise an incident commander on response measures and assist with requests for additional state support. Building a partnership with local emergency response organizations helps the team be able to rapidly respond when needed and effectively function as a member of a joint domestic operations team. As part of IT Customer Support for The Software Partnership (later Deluxe Data International Operations then eFUNDS), one of my accounts was GiroBank in Denmark. This involoved maintaining a Periphoics Voice Processing System and occasional trips to troubleshoot issues to Høje Taastrup. I found these pictures on the internet as my only memory of that time (1994) as it pre-dated my digital photography interests. I thought I would put them on Flickr as a placeholder for my Flickr Map.

BG Bank’s history

BG Bank is Denmark’s third-largest bank. The bank serves both retail and corporate customers through a nation-wide branch network. BG Bank’s roots go back to a number of savings banks and the now extinct post office giro system, making BG Bank the only Danish bank with branches in post offices.

The bank’s history starts in Copenhagen in 1857, when Dansk Spare- og Præmie og Børne- og Alderdomsforsørgelses-Forening (The Danish Savings, Premium and Children and Old Age Protection Society) was founded. The name was later changed to Sparekassen Bikuben (The Beehive Savings Bank).

From money in the mail to money orders

For about 200 years the Danish post office was in charge of sending letters, packages and money. This meant that paper money was sent directly from the remitter to the receiver. However, in 1851 money orders and cash-on-delivery were introduced, following a German example.

The number of savings banks was increasing, and a large network of local brokerage firms was also emerging. In 1894, Sparekassen Bikuben had to set up a trust department in order to administer the large amount of inheritance, legacies and endowment funds entrusted to it.

Post office giro in 1920

After many years’ debate, the Danish government decided to introduce the post office giro system on January 1, 1920. As long as the banks kept their monopoly on cheques, they didn’t object. Savings banks, on the other hand, worried about competition for the working class customer’s money.

The post office giro system quickly caught on. By the 1960s, several smaller savings banks around the country could not keep up. Starting in 1967, Bikuben began to acquire various banks, large and small. The result was 73 mergers in total. As early as the 1970s Bikuben was operating throughout Denmark, and it ultimately became the largest savings bank in the country.

The post office giro system turned out to be a great success for the Danish Post and Telegraph service. In 1986, Post Office Giro was made into an independent unit under the leadership of P&T. Two years later, Post Office Giro became a state-owned company, and in 1991 it was privatised under the name Girobank.

Bikuben and Girobank

In 1989, Bikuben became the first savings bank to be converted into a joint-stock company, and the company’s shares were listed on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange. By 1994, Bikuben’s head office was toying with the idea of expanding, perhaps through a merger, while Girobank was concurrently looking for a partner. In 1995, Sparekassen Bikuben, with its large base of retail customers, merged with Girobank, which had a large base of corporate customers. BG Bank was born.

The 1998 merger of BG Bank and Realkredit Danmark

In 1995, BG Bank began co-operating with Topdanmark in order to satisfy its customers’ needs for pension plans, life insurance and non-life insurance.

BG Bank also joined forces with Realkredit Danmark in order to offer mortgage financing of real estate, which plays a major part in the finances of most Danish households. The collaboration led to the merger of BG Bank and Realkredit Danmark in 1998, under the joint holding company Kapital Holding A/S. The well-known names of the two original companies were kept intact.

BG Bank and Realkredit Danmark became part of the Danske Bank Group in 2001.
