I arrived in Manchester shortly after the riots of 2011. There were police officers literally on every single street corner. You could also see the boarded up windows of shops that had been looted and it was the talk of the town. Most Mancunian's were pretty pissed at the people who did riot, and a wall of peace was started at the Arndale Center that was in the center of the looting. And make no mistake about it, the riots were about looting. There were reports of some people smashing windows to a shoe shop and then trying on shoes to make sure they looted ones that fit. I suppose the saying "if criminals were smarter they wouldn't be criminals" applies here.
Taken when the subject was in labour, the hand belongs to her sister/ support person who was massaging her back.
The only light source was a tealight candle as the mother went into "primal mode" and wanted to be in a dark room and not talk... and this is how it all happened.
I personally love this photo because it shows a woman still looking elegant and beautiful during one of the most empowering yet vulnerable times of her life - I also love the bond that these sisters had. The sister didn't leave her side during this period of labour.

On March 16, 2013, I photographed this sleeping toddler outside Lewisham Hospital. Despite heavy rain, hundreds of protestors gathered outside the hospital to support the ongoing "Save Lewisham Hospital" campaign at an event entitled, "Born in Lewisham," in which those born in Lewisham Hospital were encouraged to come along and share their stories and photos.
The campaign was established in October 2012, when Matthew Kershaw, an NHS Special Administrator appointed to deal with the financial problems of a neighbouring trust, the South London Healthcare Trust (based in Greenwich, Bexley and Bromley), recommended that Lewisham Hospital -- which is not part of the SLHT and has no financial problems -- should merge with one of the SLHT's hospitals, the Queen Elizabeth in Woolwich, and should have its A&E Department closed and other frontline services -- including maternity -- severely downgraded. In Lewisham, this would mean tens of thousands of emergencies having to be dealt with elsewhere, as well as 90 percent of Lewisham's mothers having to give birth outside the borough.
The "Born in Lewisham" event on March 16 followed two huge marches, in November and January, and although Jeremy Hunt, the health secretary, approved Matthew Kershaw's plans on January 31, judicial reviews have been launched by Lewisham Council and the Save Lewisham Hospital campaign, on the basis that the Special Administrator exceeded his remit when he included Lewisham in his proposals.

Soldiers from the Gate City-based 1032nd Transportation Company provide transportation support to United States Navy Sept. 14, 2013, at Norfolk Naval Air Station. Twenty four Soldiers in 12 vehicles carried six unserviceable target boats from Norfolk to Fort Pickett where they will have a second life as hard targets on Range 13. The Soldiers returned to Gate City Sept. 15 after traveling more than 10,800 total miles without accident or incident. In addition to providing a valuable service to their fellow services, the Soldiers gained valuable experience in mission planning and convoy operations as well as their time on the road behind the wheel. PANMUNJOM - With weapons at the ready, members of 194th Combat
Sustainment Support Battalion set out at dawn to conduct convoy
live-fire training here, March 25.
The fast-paced exercise exposed Soldiers to many of the real-world
perils found on today's asymmetric battlefield, culminating in a series
of drills designed to hone their skills in reacting to road-side bombs
and enemy small-arms fire.
"These Soldiers have been training for the past six months to prepare
for this day and their hard work is evident in the outstanding
performance I've seen throughout the battalion," said Command Sgt. Maj.
Nichelle S. Fails.
At times gritty and intense, the Soldiers worked in teams to zero in on
enemy targets with their rifles and machine guns.
"This scenario is interesting and very realistic," said Pvt. Jiwoo Kim,
a KATUSA assigned to the battalion.
Pvt. Dylan Florres, a battalion mechanic and one of the day's enemy
combatant role-players, sees the training as realistic and a good way to
build unit cohesion. "What we are doing is basically helping Soldiers
learn how to train safely and work as a team," he said.
"Everybody is highly motivated and ready to fight," said Chief Warrant
Officer 4 Joseph Williams, HHC, 194th Combat Support Sustainment
Battalion, safety officer. "Taking care of our Soldiers is very
important, we don't want any injuries. That's why we do risk assessments
and go over all of the details to make this a very safe, yet realistic,
training environment."
Master Sgt. Kenneth Ashley, the day's pyrotechnics NCO, described the
training as important in building teamwork within the battalion. "Here
in Korea and in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, we need to make sure
our Soldiers know how to react under fire and to ensure they are
prepared for anything the enemy throws at them."

MTA Bridges and Tunnels is rebuilding the Harlem River Drive southbound ramp leading onto the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge. The project, expected to be completed by the end of the year, is part of the nearly $1 billion in capital improvements planned over the next 15 years for the 75-year-old bridge, which serves a combined average of 170,000 vehicles daily. A temporary ramp, with a quick detour through local streets, is in place, continuing to give motorists access to the RFK Bridge ramp at 125th Street. This photo shows the original steel support columns are the only piece of the old ramp that remain.
