I'm working on a string quilt for a friend who is having a baby soon. Samantha's quilt inspired me to rummage through my scrap bin. oh and this quilt too by katxn and this one by Rickrack and Ribbons

(Huge bonus points if you can guess what music this is resting on. Clue: it's a violin concerto. Clue #2: it's the 3rd movement of 3.)

I'd noticed that the A string on my violin was looking rather worn close to the peg, and it'd been about a year since I last switched my strings. So since we have a concert in a couple of weeks, I replaced my then-current strings (Pirastro Tonica brand) with Dominant strings (my usual brand) a couple of days back.

Imagine my surprise when I unwound the A string and saw that it was actually BROKEN under the purple wrapping end that went around the peg! Seriously, there was only ONE metal strand still holding it together under the purple. I'm astounded it didn't snap a month ago. I took it down and showed my non-musician roommates, who were like, "whoa, dude."

Anyway, it feels good to have new strings. May these not come close this to snapping any time soon.

It's finished, but it's not done...

The first two pairs of stringers went in without any dramas. The rebates already cut in the stem needed nuancing a little so that the slot tilted downwards a bit- easily achieved with handsaw and chisel. The angle on the leading edge of the stringer was easily scribed by running a pencil along the stem itself, marking a line parallel to the notch a little in front of the stem. This extra length caused by the thickness of the flat carpenter's pencil proved to be about right for good length when the stringer was tucked into its slot.

I'm afraid I am sick of making these blocks, and I have 35 more 12" blocks to go. Ugh.

This was based on this quilt. www.filminthefridge.com/2009/04/24/a-colorful-string-quilt/

OurDailyChallenge "String"

A "String Course" is a line of bricks or other raised material running around or along the ourside of a building. Often it marks the level of the second floor on a residential building. In this case, there are three different strings, each featuring a different brick style and all painted to show it to the best effect. The house is located on Cherry street in Stayner, Ontario.

I have been going through one of those everything going wrong in the high speed photo area.

A complete rebuild of the flash head, down to the wires. The ozone and UV from these things is epic and destroys all forms of insulation like a blast from a supernova, although with less planetary consequences. :-)

The projectile sensor on the Axe is doing funny stuff, so I went back to the old school setup. The devil that I know.....

Cheers.
