Franklin Liquors Is Now On flickr!!

Rainbow-colored neon sign over now-defunct meat-market. When I took this shot the grocery store next door was still open; now it's a vacant shell, and the sign itself has come down, destination unknown. 17th St NW, south of R St. Washington, DC.

An exploration of what it is like to build one's own store and dye studio in Oakland, 2010 - on a shoestring budget.

Ahhhh! Finally, the new store is open!! Wednesday, November 20th was our first day of business.

I love this cupboard Adrienne made for the new classroom! Aren't the ladybugs darling??

Welcome to Bebe's, an amazing 2 level Miniature Toy Store Diorama (1/24 scale. This is a collectible piece (not a toy) that I created with hand-sculpted toys and hand-crafted furniture pieces. Some of the toys are manufactured to add variety to the scene.

This nugget* has two levels that are separated by clear plexiglass glass. This is done so that you can display the office and shop side by side as well. The toy store comes with a music box and has lights that are battery operated. The Diorama comes complete with everything you see in the video. AA Batteries are not included due to potential fire hazard during transport.

The dimensions are

Toy Shop - Lower Floor with base 13" W x 9 1/4"D x7 5/8"H

Office - Upper floor with patio area 13" W x 9 1/4"D x 5 1/4"H

Both shops on top of each other 12"W x 9 1/4 "D x 11"H

* Nuggets are exquisite gifts for very special people. Nuggets preserve memories of beautiful moments or items, they let you dream, and arouse passion and emotion. Let yourself be enchanted by my range of tiny miniatures from 1/24" to 1/12" scale. Custom requests are always welcome - just contact me.

"Solicitors will be asked to buy something they don't want."

Amanda Shires at Jake's Backroom on 11/10/06

We started off our morning with my father trying to find a hat at the right price. For myself, I can never understand bargaining, trying to lower the price by twenty American cents. What's the bleeding point? Also, I suck at it.

Mrs. Francis doesn't have alot but she has the better prices. This is one of the 3 small grocery stores, 2 ailes, yep thats all, the biggest store is double this size, thats right 4 rows!!!! You really have to be creative in your cooking that's for sure. Fruits and veggies are brought in once a week here and there is a line waiting, very little is grown on the island. The gov. is trying to motivate peple to do more agriculture, but this new generation is not too motivated to do that kind of work.

The town's past is recalled in Freckleton's Store (c.1900) and the even older (1891) building which stands next to it. Freckleton's is well worth a visit. It has changed little over the last century. Mr Freckleton is only too happy to talk about the area and his store although he threatens that if he becomes a tourist attraction he'll start charging people for his reminiscences.

Alright, I'm making fun of the wedding dresses at the Salvation Army. But before you think I'm a thrift store snob, I"m not! I've become enamored with entering the store, finding t-shirts that are practically new, for $1 and shorts for $2. And was offended at the Goodwill for charging $4 for the same! :-)

But a wedding dress from a thrift store, I just don't know if I could do it...but then again... ;-)
