After a recent jaunt out across the Niagara Peninsula we were returning home and as we passed through Wainfleet, Ontario, I decided I would like to stop and see what I could photography there. I have passed through Wainfleet many times over the years and it was always one of those places I was going to come back to and photography, ‘some day’. It was ‘some day’. One building in particular caught my eye. On the main street (which happens to be the highway North-South-ish) stands an old barn-like building that had once been a store, apparently a hardware, or possibly farm supply, store. Now derelict, the building had interesting textures as well as some random junk abandoned on its porch. Ideal subject matter for a few photos. - JW

Tech Details:
Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D800 fitted with an AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1:4.0 lense set to 31mm, ISO100, Daylight WB, Matrix metering, Aperture Priority mode, f/8.0, 1/50 sec with an EV+0.67 exposure bias. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: set final image size to be 8000px wide, apply Tone Mapping at default settings, use the Graduated Neutral Density/GND tool to darken the bottom of the frame and better balance its tonality with the top, increase contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, use the Shadows/Highlights tool to recover both highlight and shadow detail, boost Vibrance, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: use the Hue-Saturation-Brightness tool to slightly slightly boost the red-channel-only to bring out the red-painted siding, boost contrast slightly, sharpen, save, scale to 6000px wide, sharpen, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 3000 px wide for posting online, sharpen very slightly, save.
This photo has been waiting and never seemed to bubble to the top of my posting queue. It finally gets its day, almost two years after it was taken.
So folks today is Record Store Day. As music ties photography for my favourite pastime it is possibly the best day of the year for me. Other than my wife's birthday of course.
Taken on the balcony of The Malt Cross Victorian theatre (now top class pub) in Nottingham. So glad that vinyl is back!
One of many fascinating stores to be found in shopping centres in townships and township clusters such as Soweto. This store had used electrical goods for sale ( and perhaps repair too).

Burden's Store

Night photo of the abandoned Burden's Store and Post Office, built in 1926, shortly after the Burdens purchased it from another family. They also built an adjoining post office, which the son Charles ran even after his father passed away. The store was built when this part of Route 66 was still a dirt road, and for many decades, was the main hub of Helendale, CA.

This is one of the first photos I created with my new camera, a Pentax K-1, which was a joy to use. I've been using Nikons for many years, so finding the controls and everything else was a bit of an adjustment. I photographed up and down Route 66 at night, using Barstow as a home base. While taking this night photo, I illuminated the exterior of the building with a ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the two minute exposure. This might appear in a night photography book I am working on now.
