Gail is a vintage grocery store doll from the early 1960s. I found her just by chance, when I was 'channel surfing,' so to speak (looking aimlessly) on etsy.
Her face is very similar to Sweet Sue Sophisticate and Revlon dolls of the 1950s-very early 1960s who have a somewhat square-ish jaw and mature look in contrast to the more oval-faced, turned-up-nose, cute look that became more common after the 1950s and can be seen, for instance, in Candy Fashion dolls and DeLuxe Reading's various grocery store dolls, as well as in top-line dolls.
***Her body, like many grocery store dolls, is stuffed with kapok and consists of only 2 pieces: the head (not stuffed but regular vinyl); and a body made of ONE piece--the arms, legs, etc. are all together. Thus, there is no movement of arms and legs.
Kapok stuffing can lead to a kind of warping of the legs--they can became swayed to one side, for example, probably from not being able adequately to support the weight of the doll while left standing (that's just a guess). Luckily, Gail's legs are in good condition. I have put her on a stand so her legs will stay relatively straight.
One advantage is that though grocery store dolls were CHEAP--let me say that again:
CHEAP! CHEAP and PROUD!
--her hair is wonderful.
When I got her, her hair was limp, flat and bedraggled but I rinsed it with conditioner and it was very soft and manageable. Plus, just several minutes in curlers and her hair hair curled like a dream! Her hair is not thick yet it looks like a full bouffant-ish style just because of how great it curls.
Blessed, cheap 50+ year old grocery store doll (that I never had until now), I love you!

This old general store and wheat store building was opened in 1859 for Seickmann and Moule as a store and wheat depot. That partnership was very successful but it ended in 1878 when Moule retired and Seickmann retired not long after. The store and wheat store was then taken over by Matthew Partidge. He ran it from 1888 to about 1920 as a store and wheat store as he was a wheat buyer. The northern part of the store was added in 1873. After Matthew Partidge's time it was taken over by S and G Crawford who were hay chaff and wood merchants. Later Ray Hannaford owned the store. At times it was vacant or just used for storage. Lance Vater sold it to the Historical Society and it became a museum.
When Crawfords sold the store they moved into a new store in Belvedere Road the main shopping street of Saddleworth.

The central hub of shopping activity in the bustling metropolis of Curlew, WA.
A great little store, tons of character and a surprisingly wide variety of stuff. There isn't a better place to buy a Mountain Dew in Ferry County. If you are on your way north to Canada from eastern Washington, make a point to stop by this place. Check out the Ansorage Hotel down the road to see some very interesting history and what life in the late 19th and early 20th century was like in the area.
Image stuff:
Original image was processed in photoshop using my own 'vintage wash' technique (I use it on most of my photos to varying degrees) followed by some dodging and burning, and I smoothed the sky with the reduce noise filter - the effect was masked in to preserve texture and sharpness in the building.
This store has some sort of extra sensory perception that allows it to be closed every time we go to Silver Islet.

You can shop on line at shop.cbmm.org, with all proceeds benefiting the people and children served by this non-profit museum.
