This is the inside of a “dollar store”. Dollar stores sell items which are not available in the ration stores and which must be purchased using US dollars or convertible pesos. This is half of the store, with the food section to the rear of the lady viewing the liquor. There is equal space on the facing side devoted to clothing and electronics. Even if one has dollars, the selection of food available to purchase is not abundant.
Two days after this was taken, I went to my local Vons Supermarket. The contrast could not have been more dramatic

Old feed store in Cambridge, Idaho. I'm not sure whether it's still a feed mill or if it's used for something else. There was activity around, so someone is using it for something.

Daiso is like a Japanese dollar store. They sell Japanese livingware for good prices. Most of their stuff is $1.50. There are only nine stores in the USA. Most of them are in California while we have four in Washington. However, most of them (2,500 stores) are located in Japan.

This shopping center is under complete transformation and renovation. The shopping center originally contained a SAFEWAY Supermarket along with a Sav-on Drug Store, side by side. To the left of these two stores were a row a smaller shops. In 1988, when SAFEWAY Supermarkets' Southern California Area Stores were taken over by VONS Supermarkets. VONS renamed this store PAVILIONS and it has remained a PAVILIONS since that time. (SAFEWAY took over VONS in 2006) Next door to the left was a Sav-on Drug Store, which converted to a CVS Pharmacy Drug Store in 2006.
In the last couple of years SAFEWAY has worked on plans to replace the PAVILIONS with a larger store. The original store at this location was in the same design as the former SAFEWAY Supermarket location in Venice, California. The CVS Drug Store was relocated in 2007 to the opposite end of the shopping center. The PAVILIONS and the old CVS were demolished last fall. Photos on this date show the new Pavilions being built. One of xx photos of this shopping center.
