This old general store and wheat store building was opened in 1859 for Seickmann and Moule as a store and wheat depot. That partnership was very successful but it ended in 1878 when Moule retired and Seickmann retired not long after. The store and wheat store was then taken over by Matthew Partidge. He ran it from 1888 to about 1920 as a store and wheat store as he was a wheat buyer. The northern part of the store was added in 1873. After Matthew Partidge's time it was taken over by S and G Crawford who were hay chaff and wood merchants. Later Ray Hannaford owned the store. At times it was vacant or just used for storage. Lance Vater sold it to the Historical Society and it became a museum.
When Crawfords sold the store they moved into a new store in Belvedere Road the main shopping street of Saddleworth.
109 Courthouse Square
Reportedly, the land at 109 Courthouse Square was purchased by W.S. Warnock, founder of the Citrus County Chronicle and George Demuro, Clerk of the Court, in 1908. The building was constructed and operated by City Savings Bank in 1910. Edward Sasser ran a dry goods store here in the 1930's, and first served as a City Councilman in 1918 and again from 1935-1951.
West & Reaves Lumber Co. purchased the building in 1920, and operated it as a commissary for the lumber mill across the street, in the vicinity of what is currently N. Apopka Ave. The building was then purchased by Wilson Plumbing in 1936 and sold in 1939 in a tax deed sale for $17.26. G.W. and M.C. Scofield, attorneys at law, occupied the building from 1945-1952. The Citrus Co. Chronicle occupied the building during the late 1950's.
Balasch Dry Cleaners is remembered in this building for many years, owned and operated by both Paul Balasch, Sr. and Paul Balasch, Jr. A steam boiler was used in the dry cleaning process prior to modern day cleaning and technology. Paul's wife Kathleen, served on City Council for 17 years and was the first woman Mayor from 1972-1973. Dr. Jackson Straub and his wife Roseann occupied the building from 1983 - 1993. They owned and operated Endangered Species Antiques and Collectibles that was successful for many years. Other occupants of the building include Lovick Williams Law Office and DigiCell Communications.
While running a bank errand I noticed this sign at the other end of the parking lot.
[typo is that it should be "Lucifer's"]
Does this store sell only Demon Rum, I wonder?
(right, I see the "Wine" signs, they're pretty hard to miss. Work with me, here :P )

Route 66 mural on the side of Zettlers Store on Ash Fork. Homer and Marie Zettler arrived in Ash Fork about 1930 and opened a bakery there. It became Zettler’s Market after World War II. Vernon, the couple’s oldest son, kept the business going until he and his wife retired in 1983.
Casual Male XL in Temecula is officially closed, I wanted to go in and take a look but it was already closed, their merchandise still inside being packed by the employees to be shipped to another location...
A closer look at the best damn 'Store Closed' sign you'll ever see! You can even see the employee thru the door, it's a shame they closed so now I'll have to go my shopping elsewhere...

The central hub of shopping activity in the bustling metropolis of Curlew, WA.
A great little store, tons of character and a surprisingly wide variety of stuff. There isn't a better place to buy a Mountain Dew in Ferry County. If you are on your way north to Canada from eastern Washington, make a point to stop by this place. Check out the Ansorage Hotel down the road to see some very interesting history and what life in the late 19th and early 20th century was like in the area.
Image stuff:
Original image was processed in photoshop using my own 'vintage wash' technique (I use it on most of my photos to varying degrees) followed by some dodging and burning, and I smoothed the sky with the reduce noise filter - the effect was masked in to preserve texture and sharpness in the building.
Some additional items for my store diorama. I added some produce I had to little stryafoam trays Also made a balogna and cheese from polymer clay. Now I need to make shelving for the items that don't need to be refrigerated.
This store has some sort of extra sensory perception that allows it to be closed every time we go to Silver Islet.
You can read about it here.
