Spring has returned. The Earth is like a child that knows poems. ~Rainer Maria Rilke

I want to let you all know that mind has been preoccupied with Virginia Tech. So many from Lynchburg go to school there. And it has been sad and scary wondering about many that I know. If I have not been to your streams for awhile please forgive.

Hot Springs Creek, near Mammoth Lakes. Early Oct. Hot pools provide rising steam and the early morining light give the rock formations great contrast.

We have had so much rain this week and then, finally, a spring break. Hope that everybody has a fun weekend. I'll be by to visit soon - lots to catch up on.

spring arrives in Vancouver.

I am pleased to announce that they have awakened from their long winter nap and agreed to return this year for a special limited engagement. Even though it seems they are here and then gone again so quickly we are always glad to see them. So ladies and gentlemen, let's hear it for The First Signs of Spring !!!

Saw a storm coming in after work so I hit the rims for a view. I really need to get a heavy ND filter so I can get some cool daytime long exposures. Anyone want to donate?

Just one of those moments where you look at newly open leaves and realise it is Spring!

It just can't get here fast enough

I'm a little addicted to Spring blossom at the moment!

A tranquil woodland scene is centered around a small, clear water body reflecting the surrounding trees. Sunlight filters through the emerging spring foliage, highlighting new plants and last year's fallen leaves submerged in the water.

Happy Easter to everyone!

I found a few tiny grasshoppers in my garden - I actually thought they were aphids as they were that small...

Starvation Creek spring green.

The creek (and subsequently the falls) was originally named "Starveout Creek" due to an incident in 1884. The Pacific Express train carrying 148 passengers and crew rolled out of The Dalles heading west on schedule to arrive in Portland later that day, December 18, 1884. Along the way a blizzard trapped the train between two avalanches with 25 foot high snow drifts. A relief party finally reached them on Christmas Day by foot. Among those helping the hungry passengers was "one hog who had the misfortune of being in Hood River at the time." A week later the train was able to retreat to The Dalles. It finally reached Portland three weeks late on January 7, 1885. ..." [Oregon State Archives, March 2004]

There may not be a food shortage in our contry however, in my opinion, there is a shortage of chemical free, non GMO, (genetically modified) nutritious food.

Hanoi, Vietnam.

We arrived back in Hanoi around 4 or 5 in the morning, and the hostel we used our first night there was awesome enough to just let us nap in their lobby for a few hours and then eat breakfast for free before we left for our cooking class. From the restaurant where we booked the class, our guide took us to a market to show us all kinds of food and ingredients, and then to another restaurant where the class actually took place.

The chef (who was our age!) taught use how to make springs rolls and pho bo (beef noodle soup), and then made us another dish to munch on when we were done. We also tried to make roses out of tomato peels. I failed, quite impressively. Kaley, on the other hand, must have been a carpenter (or chef) in another life and pretty much nailed it.

The whole experience was a little on the pricier side, but was worth it for everything that we got to do. The class was through Highway 4 Restaurant.

Here are the springs rolls, WITH a bonus shot of Kaley in her chef garb. The rolls weren't the most amazing, but I'm not sure if that's because I suck at cooking or if I just don't like them much anyway.
