Or at least I thought spring had arrived when I shot this yesterday. It snowed again in the night. Just a thin layer though, that should disappear later in the day ... I hope!

Spring Mill Pond is a popular swimming hole at Island Lake State Recreation Area near Brighton Michigan. I suspect it is an old gravel pit which makes the water very clear.

Rack: I feel like a lot of grief is for ourselves. A pre-grieving for our own ends. I had a similar grief as you describe when my father died. I came back from Dublin and one night just roared and wailed, an extreme weeping. It felt very efficient. I stopped and it felt as if I was largely done with the loss of him. Nothing as simple with the mother.
I really like the idea of euthanasia on demand. I think I would relax a lot knowing it was there.
Ruin: That quite reminds me of Gerard Manley Hopkins’ poem ‘Spring and Fall’. It’s written to a girl called Margaret. It begins with “Márgarét, áre you gríeving”, and ends with the lines “It ís the blight man was born for, It is Margaret you mourn for.”. It’s strange, but I was reading it yesterday and then you left this message. Yes, we grieve for ourselves, and 35 years is a lot of grieving, perhaps leading to that pithy diagnosis, PTSD. I think we are doing rather well, and have somehow pulled some sanity out of where we have got/found ourselves. I think our capacity to put it down, write it out, make images, whatever, might have leavened that somewhat, made it easier even.
Yes, it’s there, that euthanasia more or less on demand. They even give you a little handbook describing the possibility, and the route to get there. I am not at all sure what this does to your psyche. I suspect it might be double-edged, like everything else.
Natalie Merchant recorded a song based on the poem:
