Republicans cast a jubilant vote on immigration reform. The Congressional Simulation Exercise on April 4 was designed to give about 150 West Point cadets in the SS202 and SS252 (American Politics) courses a hands-on, real-world simulation of government in action. Participants absorbed the role of legislators, journalist, lobbyists and presidential advisers in a daylong capstone exercise to see who can best use political capital to create the best outcome for their group. Helping Mo with the court room simulation for the 2018-9 MSc Forensic Information Tech students. Great fun, and great to see Tobi and Soraya, both former FIT students, and both now lecturers at the University.
Simulation day at #CityCollegeFTL! We conducted a scenario involving a mass casualty situation with five victims, in which students from several programs participated. The results were outstanding! The medical assisting students came to the aide of one victim and called the EMS team to take over. The most severe patient was taken to the operating room for surgery, with the anesthesia and surgical technology students. Amazing work was done by our students.
MOUNTAIN HOME AIR FORCE BASE, Idaho -- Senior Airman David Vaughner, 366th Civil Engineer Squadron pavement and equipment operator, drills holes with a skid steer in preparation for a revetment at a simulated deployed location here March 19, 2013. A revetment is a barrier that protects military assets and personnel from harm. (U.S. Air Force photo/Staff Sgt. Roy Lynch)

The simulation software reduced training expenses for Farmers Insurance by reducing the amount of travel that prospective claims agents had to make, and by eliminating the need to train with costly real-world materials. In addition, by prescreening applicants in the virtual world, real-world training only occurred for candidates that had a good chance of succeeding to become insurance adjusters, as demonstrated in their training simulation scores.
Don't be fooled by the familiar pattern. The graceful spiral structure seen in this computer visualization does not portray winding spiral arms in a distant galaxy of stars. Instead, the graphic shows spiral shock waves in a three dimensional simulation of an accretion disk -- material swirling onto a compact central object that could represent a white dwarf star, neutron star, or black hole. Such accretion disks power bright x-ray sources within our own galaxy. They form in binary star systems which consist of a donor star (not shown above), supplying the accreting material, and a compact object whose strong gravity ultimately draws the material towards its surface. For known x-ray binary systems the size of the accretion disk itself might fall somewhere between the diameter of the Sun (about 1,400,000 kilometers) and the diameter of the Moon's orbit (800,000 kilometers). One interesting result of the virtual reality astrophysics illustrated here is that the simulated disk develops instabilities which tend to smear out the pronounced spiral shocks.

Who says it needs to be real to be a snapshot? Railworks 4 a.k.a trainsimulator 2013 is a virtual simulator which allows one to drive trains through many countries, and lines including the UK. The game allows the player to take pictures as they embark on their journey. Needless to say I like driving on the Brighton Mainline...

The Millennium Run used more than 10 billion particles to trace the evolution of the matter distribution in a cubic region of the Universe over 2 billion light-years on a side. It kept busy the principal supercomputer at the Max Planck Society's Supercomputing Centre in Garching, Germany for more than a month. By applying sophisticated modelling techniques to the 25 Tbytes of stored output, Virgo scientists have been able to recreate evolutionary histories both for the 20 million or so galaxies which populate this enormous volume and for the supermassive black holes which occasionally power quasars at their hearts. By comparing such simulated data to large observational surveys, one can clarify the physical processes underlying the buildup of real galaxies and black holes.

Same picture as before, but testing to see if new Pro account keeps the upload at its original size. The other one seems to be gone now, even though Flickr said I couldn't delete it - weird. I'm using the latest version of the add-on "shuttle fleet" for Orbiter to simulate the upcoming STS-118 shuttle mission. The included AutoFCS entry and landing autopilot is amazing. Here is the starting dialog, requesting a landing at KSC runway 33. The autopilot does the rest.
