Completed on September 17, 1976, the Enterprise (shown here) was the first full scale prototype Space Shuttle. She was a test vehicle and never spent time in space. On November 18, 1985, Enterprise was retired and ferried to Washington, D.C., where it became property of the Smithsonian Institution. She now resides at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City.

Space Shuttle Atlantis at the Kennedy Space Center

All around the Atlantis Shuttle, there are interactive displays on several floors to learn more about the history and technologies of NASA's Space Shuttle Program. As we move forward, the corridor becomes orange and red, as if we felt the sudden return of the shuttle into the Earth's atmosphere …

This is just a spacecraft design I came up with. I didn't really base it off of something else, but it is meant to be some kind of shuttle.

Uploaded for Jules' May 27th Photo Challenge - Throwback 10 years ago. The NASA 747 took off from Edwards AFB CA. carrying the Space Shuttle Endeavour to it's new home at the Science Museum in LA.

They actually pulled it thru the streets of LA on a special trolley, you may have seen it on TV.

I took this as it passed over our house on it's way. We live about 13 miles from Edwards.

Words nor my picture can describe how awesome it is to stand a few feet from the Enterprise. My jaw was close to the floor and I was speechless for a good number of minutes.

Per the Smithsonian "The first Space Shuttle orbiter, "Enterprise," is a full-scale test vehicle used for flights in the atmosphere and tests on the ground; it is not equipped for spaceflight. Although the airframe and flight control elements are like those of the Shuttles flown in space, this vehicle has no propulsion system and only simulated thermal tiles because these features were not needed for atmospheric and ground tests. "Enterprise" was rolled out at Rockwell International's assembly facility in Palmdale, California, in 1976. In 1977, it entered service for a nine-month-long approach-and-landing test flight program. Thereafter it was used for vibration tests and fit checks at NASA centers, and it also appeared in the 1983 Paris Air Show and the 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans. In 1985, NASA transferred "Enterprise" to the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum."

The Space Shuttle Enterprise has been the centerpiece of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles International Airport for several years. But New York here she comes!

Preparations are under way for Enterprise to be flown to JFK Airport this spring, and in the summer, be moved by barge to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City. In her place, NASA is moving the Space Shuttle Discovery, the most traveled orbiter in the fleet, to the Air & Space Musuem for her retirement. Discovery arrives in DC April 17!

Amazing shot of an astronaught on the Space Shuttle Discovery. I had to share this rare gem. Obviously I didn't take the shot.

N2SBL was a Mercedes 709D / Alexander (Belfast) B29F purchased new by Shuttle Buses of Kilwinning in May 1996. It passed to Stagecoach Western in 1997 as part of a deal which included Shuttle Buses service work. Shuttle Buses retained the number plate N2SBL forcing the Merc to become N446TOS. It was captured in Irvine heading for the Cross when brand-new.

The Space Shuttle Atlantis now proudly rests at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida after 33 missions; serving NASA from 1985 - 2011. It was truly amazing to see the orbiter in person and was worth the long drive from Texas.

The Space Shuttle Enterprise is shown on display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles International Airport. Its career was brief, making its first flight on Aug. 12, 1977, and its last flight the same year on Oct. 26. The craft, which was not built for actual space flight, was moved in 2012 to New York City. (Scanned from a slide)
