The week after Labor Day is for the locals down the Jersey Shore, seen in the empty parking spaces usually filled with beachgoers. Without the summer crowds, a Bay Head shuttle holds to schedule entering Belmar after crossing the Shark River. Powering the train is veteran NJT GP40PH-2B locomotive no. 4209.

I enjoyed watching the Space Shuttle Endeavour pass over Moffett Airfield this morning! It was a fun festival atmosphere at Moffett with a crowd of 20K, music blaring out of loudspeakers, everyone gathered on the airfield, news crews and military and Nasa folks. The funniest thing was that the shuttle's approach was hidden by the Moffett hanger so I and most of the rest of the crowd mistakenly first thought the approaching fighter jet escort was the shuttle. Just as we realized it was the wrong plane the Shuttle appeared with a roar above us. I swung around to get a few quick shots before it vanished. It was pretty funny to be part of a few thousand people having a duh moment at the same time!

This is my take on a minifig-scale UCS scale Imperial Shuttle from Return of the Jedi. Since I wasn't sure where to start, the worm gear mechanism is loosely based on the official set. However, the rest is a mix of my design with subtle cues taken from Marshal Banana's MOC and 10212. It features gear-driven wings, detachable landing gear, poseable weapons, and an opening canopy with room for 4 minifigs. It measures 62 cm in height and 68 cm in width when wings are fully extended.

THX642S was a Leyland Fleetline FE30ALR / Park Royal H71D new as London Transport DMS2642 in August 1978. On disposal it passed to Midland Fox before reaching Shuttle Buses in 1995. This shot was taken in Irvine and shows THX working on a school contract.

One of the first National's if not the first, to roll off the Leyland production line in 1972 at Workington, was this SELNEC liveried dual door Leyland National TXJ507K (EX30), now part of the Manchester Museum of Transport collection.

At the NASA Space Center in Galveston they have a mock-up of the Space Shuttle. The cockpit is cramped so I took this photo hand held with my Sigma 8mm fisheye lens.

Shuttle buses were bought in to shuttle between 30th street station and Penn Medicine. The track was closed due to construction near Arsenal interlock. SEPTA trains during this time were using the lower level Platform at 30th street station for the Wilmington line.

Another guest locomotive at the gala was Ian Riley's 'Black Five' 45407, masquerading as 45157 'The Glasgow Highlander' (complete with Scottish blue smokebox number and shed plates). Seen here drawing into Ramsbottom with the 2 coach shuttle service - 2E32 - which forms the 10.10 to Bury. The original 45157 was one of only four (put of a class total of 842) 'Black Fives' to carry names in LMS/BR service. She was withdrawn from St Rollox shed, Glasgow on 31 December 1962.

Space shuttle Atlantis sits on display inside the new 100 million dollar exhibit hall at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. The grand opening will be held on June 29, 2013.

Shuttle Buses continue to thrive on the local commercial and tendered work right across Ayrshire just now. YJ59PKO is one of several Solos now on the fleet which can be seen working anywhere between Largs in the north, to Kilmarnock in the east and Colmonell in the south.

That this thing used to glide and not just drop out of the sky like a stone is impressive!

This is just a spacecraft design I came up with. I didn't really base it off of something else, but it is meant to be some kind of shuttle.

Space Shuttle Enterprise (OV-101) arrives in New York, NY at John F. Kennedy International Airport atop the modified NASA Boeing 747-100. The Enterprise will become the cornerstone exhibit at the USS Intrepid Air, Sea, and Space Museum on the Hudson River in Manhattan.

The Space Shuttle orbiter has just released an unmanned satellite into earth orbit. Payloads such as this satellite are carried in the orbiter's payload cargo bay, which is 60 feet long and 15 feet in diameter.

Obviously based on the NASA space shuttle, this is what I believe a near- or far-future one would look like, with big powerful engines capable of leaving orbit without rocket assistance.

I could have made it more sleek by omitting the giant tailfin, but it just looks so iconic and "right" with it. If there is a single vehicle that embodies the true spirit and success of humanity better than the space shuttle, I don't know what it is.

Looked lovely but plenty of rust fails in it's 76,000 miles.

25 years ago this month I watched Space Shuttle Columbia being ferried to Florida on top of a 747 after being refurbished in California. These images were shot from Florida. Was using a 500mm fixed focal length lens hand held without a tripod. And with ISO 100 film. Therefore, using slower shutter speeds than I would have liked. But managed to get a couple of shots without too much motion blur.
