On a walk around Mona Vale Christchurch September 2, 2016 New Zealand.

Mona Vale, with its homestead formerly known as Karewa, is a public park of 4 ha in the Christchurch suburb of Fendalton. The homestead and gate house are both listed as heritage buildings with Heritage New Zealand (NZHPT). The fernery and the rose garden, and pavilion with the setting of the park along the Avon River, add to the attractiveness of the property. It is one of the major tourist attractions of Christchurch.

Pictures of the beautiful New Dungeness Lighthouse taken on our way northward after leaving Seattle. This stunning lighthouse looks like it rises out of the Strait of Juan de Fuca on the narrowest track of land you could imagine. Luckily for us on the port side of the ship, we were able to see this beautiful light on our way northbound. With the dusk approaching, the pictures took an ethereal quality to them. Took 855 pictures and selected my favorites from there. Taken during our cruise on board the Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas for the seven night Alaska Experience Cruise (September 2nd through 9th, 2022). The cruise embarks from Seattle, Washington and the itinerary includes stops in Juneau (AK), Skagway (AK), Sitka (AK) and Victoria (British Columbia, Canada) before heading back to Seattle.

On September 9th, 2017, there were test runs on the old WLE line between Münster and Sendenhorst with Cologne's "Vareo" LINT 622 004. It is seen here standing on track 21 in Münster Central Station, where you can see rarely any trains. The reason for this rare happening is the planned reactivation for passenger trains until 2028 (initial plans by 2017 used to expect 2025).

Our storm season is coming to an end, I wasn't about to miss out on one of Mother Natures last showing of Electrical Theater...in South Central Nebraska.

First round of storms hit about 5am. Sound asleep, my wife was shaking me, get up, get up.. I was prepared in case the storms erupted. There was so much lightning, it illuminated everything in the room. Grabbed my essential gear, headed out of the house, opened garage door and the 45mph wind gust made the rain go horizontal. Pea sized hail was ferociously coming down, I wasn't going anywhere.....

I was honestly disappointed, thinking that I had probably missed my last good opportunity for some incredible nighttime storm captures. Storms were supposed to fire in the early overnight not early morning.....

Hence living in Nebraska, patience has to be a virtue for every storm enthusiast. I went out after the first storms pushed through. I was about to capture some of my best of storm snaps of 2013. I was in luck, as strong thunderstorm redevelopment just off to the southwest....

The 2nd round of storms were producing some incredible Cloud to Cloud, and tons of Cloud to Ground Lighting. I couldn't have asked for a better photo opportunity!

I was hoping that these won't be the last shots of 2013, the were not.... Definitely worth my time catching them that early morning! Eye Candy for the Storm Chaser in Mind!

Last September I took a series of pictures of a fairly new wall installation down at a local piece of beach. I originally thought it quite ugly but, upon closer inspection and as the evening sunlight hit its surface, I realized there was something much more abstract and artistic to be enjoyed in its slow transformation thanks to the natural elements of sand, sea, tide and time. I went back again today and have a completely different set of images to enjoy.

William Brodie (28 September 1741 – 1 October 1788), more commonly known by his prestigious title of Deacon Brodie, was a Scottish cabinet-maker, deacon of the trades guild and Edinburgh city councillor, who maintained a secret life as a burglar, partly for the thrill, and partly to fund his gambling.

By day, Brodie was a respectable businessman, member of the burgh council and deacon (or president) of the Incorporation of Wrights and Masons. Part of his job in building cabinets was to install and repair their locks and other security mechanisms and repair door locks. He also served on a jury. He socialised with the gentry of Edinburgh, meeting poet Robert Burns and the painter Sir Henry Raeburn. He was also a member of The Edinburgh Cape Club.

At night, however, Brodie became a burglar and thief. He used his daytime job as a way to gain knowledge about the security mechanisms of his clients and to copy their keys using wax impressions. As the foremost wright of the city, Brodie was asked to work in the homes of many of the richest members of Edinburgh society. He used the illicit money to maintain his second life, including five children, two mistresses who did not know of each other, and a gambling habit. He reputedly began his criminal career around 1768 when he copied keys to a bank door and stole £800. In 1786 he recruited a gang of three thieves, Brown, Smith and Ainslie.

The case that lead to Brodie's downfall began later in 1786 when he organised an armed raid on an Excise office in Chessel's Court on the Canongate. Brodie's plan failed and Ainslie was captured. Ainslie agreed to turn King's evidence, to avoid transportation, and informed on the rest of the gang. Brodie escaped to the Netherlands intending to flee to the United States but was arrested in Amsterdam and shipped back to Edinburgh for trial.

The trial started on 27 August 1788. At first there was no hard evidence against Brodie before the tools of his criminal trade were found in his house; copied keys, a disguise and pistols. The jury found Brodie and his henchman George Smith, a grocer, guilty. Smith was an English locksmith responsible for a number of thefts, even stealing the silver mace from the University of Edinburgh.

Brodie and Smith were hanged at the Tolbooth on 1 October 1788, using a gallows Brodie had designed and funded the year before. According to one tale, Brodie wore a steel collar and silver tube to prevent the hanging from being fatal. It was said that he had bribed the hangman to ignore it and arranged for his body to be removed quickly in the hope that he could later be revived. If so, the plan failed. Brodie was buried in an unmarked grave at the Parish Church in Buccleuch. However rumours of his being seen in Paris circulated later and gave the story of his scheme to evade death further publicity.

Popular myth holds that Deacon Brodie built the first gallows in Edinburgh and was also its first victim. Of this William Roughead in Classic Crimes states that after research he was sure that although the Deacon may have had some hand in the design "...it was certainly not of his construction, nor was he the first to benefit by its ingenuity".

The dichotomy between Brodie's respectable façade, and his real nature inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Stevenson's father had furniture made by Brodie.

Deacon Brodie is commemorated by a pub of that name on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, on the corner between the Lawnmarket and Bank Street which leads down to The Mound, and a close (or alleyway) off the Royal Mile has been named after him. There is also a pub in Ward Road, Dundee named after him. A pub in New York City carrying his name sits on the south side of the famous west side 46th Street Restaurant Row between 8th Avenue and 9th Avenue, closer to 9th Avenue.

In 1975 publisher Hamish Hamilton published a book by Forbes Bramble about his life: The Strange Case of Deacon Brodie.

In 1997 a TV movie of the same name was made starring Billy Connolly.

September 22nd 1990, to be precise.

During a bioblitz on September 9, 2018, I collected this active male jumping spider, figuring it was a Habronattus species. Brought him home for these photos and posted them, only to find out it is in the genus Pellenes, and quite likely an undescribed species. Meanwhile, I had released the spider back at Corral Bluffs Open Space, east of Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA.

On the 26th of September 2017 Lokomotion's 193 774 hauled freight train DGS 41856 from Trieste in Italy to Munich East shunting yard. In the meantime these Vectron-Engines are most common in front of this so-called "ekol" train. By the way - the highest mountain in the background is called "Kampenwand" and has an altitude of 1669 meters. On the left you may catch a glimpse of Grosskarolinenfeld's maypole....
