Vista Verde Memorial Park, Rio Rancho, New Mexico, September 11, 2019.

For the 10th year in a row, Rio Rancho showed it will never forget the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. There were 2,996 American flags, each commemorating a life lost that day were planted the morning of September 6th, 2019, and were fluttering in a gentle breeze Wednesday evening when Vista Verde Memorial Park conducted its memorial service. “We aren’t gonna forget,” Vista Verde Memorial Park General Manager Eric Moen told the gathering, explaining that another 2,996 white flags in a circle each had the name of a 9/11 victim on it.

Several hundred people turned out for the hour-long service. There was flag-raising by members of the Cleveland High JROTC, Girl Scouts from Troop 7135 leading the pledge of allegiance, Christina Kotila singing the national anthem, an invocation by Rio Rancho Police Chaplain Allen Sutton and opening remarks — and a proclamation — from Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull. “It’s been 18 years — our children need to be reminded of what happened and their children need to be reminded,” Hull said. “Others gave so I may enjoy this freedom.”

A classic example of the roughly built turf, stone and timber fishermans cottage, once common on the Reykjanes peninsula and other coastal areas

of Iceland, Stekkjarkot was opened to the public in 1993 by Iceland's president Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, following a year of restorations. Stekkjarkot

provides a telling insight into how cottages of this type looked like. Its history as a domestic dwelling is patchy, it was first built during the years

1855-1857 and occcupied for 30 years later when it was abandoned. More at: www.visitreykjanes.is/WhattoSeeDo/ViewAttraction/stekkjarkot

September is a beautiful time to visit Yuraygir National Park. Many flowers are in full bloom including the native Flannel Flower. I often see them covered in these beetles and bull ants attacking the beetles looking for an easy meal.

As late Summer leaks into Autumn the quality of the light adds a certain extra lift to scenes of this nature.

Name: Lillian Tibbs

Arrested for: not given

Arrested at: North Shields Police Station

Arrested on: 12 September 1914

Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-250-Lillian Tibbs

The Shields Daily News for 14 September 1914 reports:

“PETTY LARCENY. BLYTH WOMAN IN TROUBLE AT NORTH SHIELDS.

Today at North Shields, Lillian Tibbs (21), Blyth, was charged with stealing a blue voile dress, value £1, the property of Mrs A.G. Colledge, 19 Rippon Terrace, between the 1st and 2nd inst. The prosecutrix stated that eight weeks ago the prisoner engaged a combined room at her house, representing herself as a married woman. Witness afterwards found that she was not married and had given the wrong name and she ordered her to leave. On the day after she had gone witness missed the dress. Det. Mason said he received the accused into custody at Blyth where she had been apprehended on the information of the Shields police. She was wearing the dress when arrested.

Accused admitted taking the dress but said she thought there was no harm in doing so; she had given Mrs Colledge half a dozen aprons and an overcoat. Mrs Colledge said that the accused supposed husband got the overcoat but the aprons were still there.

Accused’s mother said that her daughter had been in a situation at Monkseaton and she (the mother) was not aware of the kind of life she had been leaving. She would promise to look after the girl if the magistrates would be lenient with her. She had given no trouble previously.

It was stated that the accused had said she had gone to live with the man in question out of spite against his wife. The man had now gone away to the Front. Accused promised to amend her life and was bound over in the sum of £5 to be of good behaviour for six months".

These images are taken from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 (TWAM ref. DX1388/1). This set is our selection of the best mugshots taken during the First World War. They have been chosen because of the sharpness and general quality of the images. The album doesn’t record the details of each prisoner’s crimes, just their names and dates of arrest.

In order to discover the stories behind the mugshots, staff from Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums visited North Shields Local Studies Library where they carefully searched through microfilm copies of the ‘Shields Daily News’ looking for newspaper reports of the court cases. The newspaper reports have been transcribed and added below each mugshot.

Combining these two separate records gives us a fascinating insight into life on the Home Front during the First World War. These images document the lives of people of different ages and backgrounds, both civilians and soldiers. Our purpose here is not to judge them but simply to reflect the realities of their time.

September 1 is considered springday, 3 weeks ahead of the earth reaching its spring position with respect to the sun.

The trees also cannot wait for that and start to open their buds and roll out their leaves.

On 07 September 2024, a very photogenic train passed through the Altmühltal valley. BayernBahn's 139 314, which had only been freshly overhauled for a few days when the photo was taken, was hauling the DGS 95474 tank wagon train from Karlsruhe to Vohburg. It was well lit between Dollnstein and Breitenfurt and was awaited by several photographers. The locomotive, built in 1964 by Krauss-Maffei in Allach, was restored to its early Era IV condition with chrome dioxide green paint. At that time, it was initially stationed at Hagen-Eckesey depot, and from 1975 in Offenburg. The locomotive was then given the ocean blue-beige colour scheme in 1977. The former Bundesbahn locomotive has now found its final home at BayernBahn and can be seen in front of long-distance goods trains as well as special services.

At the hotel ready to head out again.

I don't have a favourite drinking glass as I mostly use a mug or thermos as I like things hot or cold..LOL! So noticed when I was emptying the dishwasher the other night, the light shining through the glasses when I had them on the counter...so went with that, did a bit of a flip and converted to a B/W...
