Captured on a Sunday morning, September 2019

September 2011.

All over the capital, the Arirang adverts (« Grand mass gymnastic and artistic performance », « Welcome to Pyongyang » and so on) warn the profane…Between August and October, takes place one of the biggest and most impressive performances in the world. The tone is set : even the Beijing Olympics ceremony can’t compete with the mass games organized by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). The show is held several times a week and welcomes tourists from all over the World, including the US, in one of the most isolated and despised country on earth. The well-called « mass games » are designed to emphasize group dynamics rather than individual performances as the supreme emblem of communism. Prepared by hundred of thousands performers all along the year, after their classes for the youngest of them, they are entirely dedicated to the NK’s leader Kim Jong Il and his deceased father Kim Il Sung, considered as the « Eternal president » and « sun of the 21st century »…

In the surroundings of Pyongyang's May Day giant Stadium, two girls are running to perform for the Arirang show. They are already dressed in their gymnastic outfits, as well as some 100,000 others who participate to the performance. They all come to honour their self-proclaimed « dear leader » Kim Jong Il, after a very hard and gruelling training, since their earliest age. Yet, it has been many years that Kim Jong Il has not shown up, formally for business reasons. But officials now admit the western medias’ assertions of illness. Anyways, Kim Jong Il or not, the mass games are held every year in Pyongyang, as a means for the regime to show to the entire world the country’s strength and good shape. To reach this sole purpose, not less than 100,000 people are involved in a choreographed show of simultaneous dancing and gymnastics. Many symbols are displayed by thousands of trained athlets, whether they are adults or even children. Hand over their heart, the young pupils sing in chorus "We are the happiest children in the world", one of the famous propaganda songs in North Korea. Many dancers make movements either with ribbons or colourful flowers named « kimjonglias » after the leader Kim Jong Il. All along the show, a live band plays a ceremonious music.

On the background, some 20,000 young koreans sit on the terraces, facing the spectators. They flip coloured cards at a high speed to form a fresco of animated and detailed images, changing from one to another. Each time they turn the page to create a new giant picture, they cry out. It creates a awe-inspiring atmosphere, as the shout is mixed with the noise of thousands of pages turned at the same moment. The figures are stunning : to compose these images, 2000 children are needed to make only one soldier, 20,000 for a north korean flag. Hiding a much more grim reality, the panels represent Pyongyang enlightened by night, wheat fields ready for harvest, scientists at work, atoms as symbols of the nuclear bomb and others for the reunification of two Koreas. One of the North Korea’s myths (history according to them) is recounted by the means of a huge image made by thousands of children. It represents the two pistols reportedly used by Kim Il Sung, when he founded the Anti-Japanese People’s Guerrilla Army in 1932. When the pistols appear, the audience applauses loudly. Among them, many soldiers attend the show as the ultimate award after years of good and faithful service. The thousands and thousands of boys and girls involved create a giant mass movement in the stadium which leaves the public stunned. These talented performers are used to that kind of performance: in North Korea they have to dance, sing, jump and spin around as many times as there are celebrations, always in praise of their leaders.

The show continues in the same way for one hour. Thereafter, the thousands of people present vanish in the dark and silent streets of Pyongyang, which contrast with the flood of lights and music in the stadium. Within the space of a few hours, it gives us a a strange feeling, between the real and unreal, of another universe both terrifying and fantastic.

September 2011- What a strange feeling this time at the DMZ: we had to queue to visit the DMZ, with hundreds of (cool) malaysian and chinese tourists who came thru north korean charters.

I really felt like in a Disneyland. But when you look in the binoculars, you can see that the 2 koreas are still well separated by barb wires!

In September/October 1981, Ipswich Borough Transport ran trials with this MAN articulated bus which caused a great deal of interest when it appeared on the Chantry service. Although another British built articulated bus was also tried out soon afterwards, Ipswich did not pursue the idea. At this time articulated buses were very rare in the U.K.

This vehicle was the first of five supplied to South Yorkshire, which later ended up with Midland Red North. It was later broken up to provide spares for its four sisters which were eventually exported.

Of nostalgic interest is the very smartly turned out Bus Inspector (a far cry from Blakey!) walking towards the camera. Can't remember the last time I saw an inspector in Ipswich (nor the last time I had my ticket or pass checked) but it was many, many years ago.

Hamburg, September 2016

On 29 September 2021, after seeing how fast the yellow leaves were falling from the trees, I decided to drive S and SW of Calgary to take a few more autumn photos before it was too late. Five days earlier, the fall colours had been more vibrant - if only this season could last much longer each year.

My morning started off with a visit to the Saskatoon Farm for a late breakfast/early lunch. They now have a take-out menu, as well as their usual patio area, which works well. I ordered a delicious chicken Quesadilla with yam fries and sat in my car in the parking lot to enjoy it.

Feeling full, I continued my drive further south. I wasn't sure exactly where I wanted to go, though a short stop to photograph an old grain elevator was on my mental list. Nothing spectacular when seen close, but I have always loved seeing it in the distance from the next road over, far across the fields. This day, the colours were different, with a large area of deep red. I'm not sure if this was Glasswort, as it was too far from where I was stopped to tell. The red patches were growing side by side with the white of dry salt. Made for a beautiful sight.

Making my way westwards, I eventually reached the other highway that goes N to S. I ended up right by the Bar U Ranch and took several photos looking down on the ranch from the gravel road above. As usual, whenever I am driving in that area, the wind was strong.

Much closer to home, I couldn't resist a very quick stop to take a photo or two of a favourite old, white barn. It is eye-catching and it appears to be in great shape. I still remember how it took my breath away when I came across it the very first time, but seen from the opposite side.

It was a good day to be out of the city!

Melbourne September 8, 2013 Australia. We spent the day walking around the city with a friend from Flickr and it was most enjoyable. For sure we would have never seen so much except for our wonderful guild.

Melbourne is the capital and most populous city in the state of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia.

Melbourne is the common name for the urban agglomeration area and Census statistical division of the greater metropolis. The city developed around the large natural bay of Port Phillip with its metropolitan hub, the Melbourne City Centre, located at the northernmost point of the bay - near the estuary of the Yarra River. The metropolitan area extends south from the City Centre, along the eastern and western shorelines of Port Phillip, and expands into the hinterland. The City Centre is situated in the municipality known as the City of Melbourne, and the metropolitan area consists of a further 30 municipalities. The metropolis has a population of 4.25 million, growing the fastest in numerical terms and fifth fastest in percentage terms since the previous year. Inhabitants of Melbourne are called Melburnians.

Melbourne was founded in 1835 (47 years after the European settlement of Australia), in what was then the Colony of New South Wales, by settlers from Launceston in Van Diemen's Land. It was named by Governor of New South Wales Sir Richard Bourke in 1837, in honour of the British Prime Minister of the day, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne. Melbourne was officially declared a city by Queen Victoria in 1847. In 1851, it became the capital city of the newly created Colony of Victoria. During the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s, it was transformed into one of the world's largest and wealthiest cities.

01 September, 2017, Somali Region, Ethiopia - IFAD/WB supported Pastoral Community Development Programme (PCDP III) – Human and Animal Health Post.

The heads of the three UN food agencies are visiting Ethiopia to highlight the critical food and nutrition security situation. Consecutive climate shocks have resulted in back-to-back droughts, which have caused hunger to soar and malnutrition rates to rise to alarming levels. The agency chiefs will discuss how best to strengthen their support to the Government and its systems so that Ethiopia can continue meeting its development goals while simultaneously addressing humanitarian challenges along the way. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Director-General José Graziano da Silva, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) President Gilbert F. Houngbo and the World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director David Beasley are in Ethiopia from 1-4 September. In the worst-affected parts of the country, in the south and south-east, rains have failed for the third consecutive year. More than 8.5 million people require food assistance in the second half of 2017. The response led by the Government has begun to stabilize the situation, however additional efforts and support is urgently needed to prevent the situation deteriorating further. The agency heads will witness first-hand the scale of the crisis during a field mission to Somali region where the drought has killed many heads of livestock, causing a breakdown in pastoral livelihoods and a jump in malnutrition. The trio will meet drought-affected people who are receiving food rations, visit nutrition centres treating malnourished children and see distributions of essential support to keep the remaining livestock alive. The current food security and nutrition crisis cannot be resolved by emergency assistance alone. The longer-term solution lies in building communitiesâ resilience to better withstand shocks and avoid being plunged back into crisis. In Tigray region, the agency chiefs will see the dividends of investing in resilience. They will visit communities where the agencies' complementary projects have boosted productivity, strengthened livelihoods and improved nutrition. In Addis Ababa, the three representatives will hold high-level discussions with Government representatives, and UN and other partner organizations, on the life-saving response and the need for greater collaboration and investment in resilience.

In September 2017 the transformer of 92016 was found to have been cracked and the locomotive dragged away for storage. When working from the overhead wires the 25 kV AC power must be converted to 1370 volt AC so that it can be used by a class 92 locomotives traction motors. This is done by the transformer which is positioned underneath the locomotive towards the cab 2 end of the common zone but much of it is obscured by the batteries and transformer tank filled with oil used for cooling and insulation.

September 29, 2012: Tall Ship Kajama - Toronto, Canada

The mast of a sailing vessel is a tall, vertical or near vertical spar, or arrangement of spars, which supports the sails. Large ships have several masts, with the size and configuration depending on the style of ship. Nearly all sailing masts are guyed masts. A guyed mast is a tall thin vertical structure that receives support from guy lines.

a one directional view

The Tall Ship Kajama traded under sail for nearly 70 years. She was a familiar ship in ports from Northwest Spain, through western Europe, and as far north as Norway and Russia. In 1999, Kajama was delivered transatlantic by Great Lakes Schooner Company and restored to her original profile. Today, the 164' three-masted gaff-rigged schooner can comfortably accommodate parties of up to 225 people in the 1,600 sq ft dining room while cruising Toronto Harbour. Kajama was used on the television series The Amazing Race.

This last September, during a long weekend , I visited Oostende with my dog, , Agape !!! It was an Indian Summer here in Belgium, having passed the real Summer under a lot of rain and sober grey weather…

So!!We were very very lucky!! Experiencing lovely, sunny, warm days by the sea!!! And the Oostende sea, has a unique personality, with its huge sandy beaches and the afternoon tides, when the water leaves the naked sand by the sea full of adorable shapes and shadows, especially during its famous sunsets!! Just look at one, right here !! I was mesmerized those moments, while these captures are taken!! Really!!

In September 1936, a British Military Mission visited the Soviet Army’s manoeuvres with BT7 medium tanks. The Soviets had evolved all BT tanks from a single Christie M1930 that they had imported from a private American supplier - Walter Christie, of New Jersey.

Colonel Giffard Le Quesne Martel (the Deputy Director of Mechanisation) arranged with William R Morris (Lord Nuffield), a car manufacturer, to import Christie's last M1930 in October 1936 using War Office financing. The turret-less hull arrived on 17 November 1936, and was delivered to the Mechanisation Experimental Establishment at Farnborough for preliminary trials, where it was designated A13E1. The Mechanisation Board chose to design a superior derivative.

The Mechanisation Board and Morris developed the M1930 into the A13E2, which was larger and faster than alternative projects, but no more lethal or survivable. The turret, although starting off as an evolution of the A12’s, was more like the turret on the earlier A9.

On 23 December 1937, the General Staff agreed to order at least 50 Cruiser IIIs in January 1938 to equip one of the three tank battalions in the Tank Brigade. On 22 January 1938, the War Office contracted for 65 Cruiser IIIs, after which production would switch to a version with better protection (A13 Mark IIs, also known as Cruiser IVs).

In December 1938, 11 months after the contract, Nuffield delivered the first production Cruiser III for running trials, although without armaments. Once complete, it was issued to the Army on 20 March 1939. By the start of WWII 43 Cruiser IIIs had been delivered. Production ended on 13 November 1939, after 65 deliveries (67, counting the pilot tanks).

In June 1940, 40 of these landed in France with 1st Armoured Division, where most of them stayed when the personnel were evacuated. A few served in North Africa into 1941.

The above vehicle was apparently retained to prove the attachment of armour plates on the turret in fulfilment of the Cruiser IV’s armour specification (30mm), which is the configuration in which it survives. It was held by the School of Tank Technology until 1949, when it transferred to the Tank Museum.

It is painted to represent a vehicle commanded by Ron Huggins (who later volunteered at the Tank Museum) of 10th Royal Hussars – a part of 1st Armoured Division, which served in western France in June 1940.

The above details were taken from the museum's website. Seen in the Tank Museum at Bovington, Dorset, the image has been processed in Lightroom and Photoshop.
