The streamlined S-Class locomotives are finally finished (unless we modify them further)! I have been helping Teunis with them for the last couple of months. Teunis has built two locos (301 and 302) and I have built a third (303) to go with the non-streamlined S that I built last year.

The design of the boiler, cab, streamlining and tender are all Teunis’s. I designed the running gear including the 3D-printed rods, redesigned the nose, added details such as handrails, and made the stickers (gold vinyl).

The VR crest and lettering were hand drawn based on scanned photographs. Thanks Mike for the loan of the vinyl cutter. Where possible, Teunis has used chromed tiles on his locos. The gold on mine is all vinyl.

The locos are fitted with custom led lights powered by 4xAAA batteries inside the boiler. They are currently unpowered – they will be pushed by motors under the carriages. I may try to power mine through the tender in the future.

Four S Class locomotives were built by the Victorian Railways as express passenger locomotives in 1928. They were streamlined in 1937 with the introduction of the new Spirit of Progress between Melbourne and Albury on the New South Wales border.

Then freshly painted in new livery, S317 leads fellow veterans S302, GM22 and 44206 wrong road past Lithgow yard with train 1845.

In service dates of the four vary from 1957 (S302) to 1971 (44206)!

The design work for the coupé began immediately after the approval of the sedan. Special attention was given to improved aerodynamics, with a drag coefficient of 0,34. The SEC luxury coupé was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1982. The 560 followed 3 years later as the most powerful model, with a new V8 engine producing 300 hp. At the time, the S-Class belonged to the very best available on the car market, especially with this engine. This coupé also had no competition in its market segment. But it came with a hefty price tag - it was more expensive than a Ferrari Testarossa.

Only found these due to stopping for the BX, one of my passengers noticed these at an overgrown, derelict house/farm beside the road.

I think the Mercedes is an S-Class rather than a W114/115? No clue as to its engine size.

This 500 SEC was the coupe version of the second generation Mercedes S-Class, which wears the internal code W126.

This series was on top of the Mercedes range, and had all comfort and safety options which were available in the late 1970s.

The W126 sedan version was designed during 1975-76 by Bruno Sacco (It, 1933-2024) and Werner Breitschwerdt. The C126 coupe version was developed by the same design team two years later in 1977.

This W126 series S-Class was much more aerodynamic than its predecessor W116 series.

The face-lifted W126/C126 series was presented in September 1985.

The C126 had a pillarless coupe body with no pillar between the front and rear side window.

Repainted into the Pacific National Blue and Yellow scheme, S307 combines with preserved C501 in the Blue and Gold Victorian Railways scheme as the pull into Heywood station on a day trip special working from Portland to Hamilton and return on 15-7-23

Freshly painted for the event, B61 poses on the turntable, slowly being rotated for all to admire!

Some initial photos from Streamliners 2016 - a one-off special event, organised by train driver (engineer) and GM streamliner tragic Bernie Baker and held in Goulburn, NSW. It brought together Clyde-GM/EMD and Goodwin-Alco streamlined locomotives originally from three different Australian state railway systems on two different gauges, now from a plethora of owners and operators. While many are now preserved or even withdrawn (with uncertain futures), some still see commercial freight train work!

*colloquialisms - "bullring" was used for tracks around a turntable without a roundhouse building, "bulldogs" is used for GM/EMD streamlined nose locomotives!

S301 departs Mildura with the 1st shuttle of the day bound for Red Cliffs.

S301 and S313 hauled shuttles on the Sunday between Red Cliffs and Merbein, stopping at Mildura in the middle. To date this was the last heritage train (excluding RM58) to visit Mildura.
