The company was founded in 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach and his son, originally a subsidiary of Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH and was itself known as Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau GmbH until 1912. In 1960 Maybach was acquired by Daimler-Benz and remains nowadays as a luxury car brand of Mercedes-Benz that is owned by Daimler AG. Daimler currently produces an ultra luxury edition of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class under the Maybach brand.

I'm taking a watercolor class with some friends - this was my preliminary sketch before painting.I think I like it better than the finished work.

Southern Shorthaul Railroad's broad gauge (5'3") units S317/S302 are Melbourne bound through Teddywaddy, Victoria, with #9198 loaded wheat from Sea Lake on 17 April 2018.
SSR started these operations towards the end of 2017 and four years later these ageing Streamliners are still active on these trains, making two to three return trips a week over the Victorian broad gauge network.
It is thought that the name Teddywaddy is derived from an Aboriginal expression meaning muddy water.

Entering the thermosphere, the layer of a planets atmosphere directly above the mesosphere and directly below the exosphere, the lobster claw of an exotic S-Class squid creeps towards the A-Class 34 slot freighter and its nineteen strong frigate fleet..

After a lengthy delay at Bathurst due to problems with the railset, Victorian Railways duo T357 and S303 from SRHC to SSR charge through Georges Plains with 8M41. The consist was BQAYs and BQIX bound for Melbourne for spoil workings.

The buck moon rises over an illuminated series of office blocks in south Dublin. Capturing multiple light sources is always tricky but the Nikon Z6 has clever firmware that permits you to navigate around these issues (if you are so technically inclined).

Looking great in fresh paint, veteran S317 leads container train 1845 through Lithgow past the last-built member of the 81 class, 8184, in October 2015.
Streamlined bulldog and good looker S317 was about to turn 54 years old, while functional 8184, the newest of its class, was a youngish 24. The first of each class entered service in 1957 and 1982 respectively. 8184 was one of four additional 81 class built several years after the rest.
A far cry from a current S-Class.
Difficult to know whether it's been here from new. It's RHD and DVLA have it first registered in 1981, but maybe it was untaxed for a while and didn't immediately get transferred onto the computer system? That might explain it being listed as "not taxed for road use".
Former Victorian Railways Clyde/EMD locos B65 and S302 line up at Streamliners 2016, held at the Goulburn Rail Heritage Centre, New South Wales on 1 October 2016..
Built for the VR in 1952 and 1957 respectively, ownership of both post-privatisation eventually passed to Southern Shorthaul Railroad. Unfortunately, as the result of major engine failures and other issues, both were scrapped in June 2025.

Minor historic moment today 4 January 2023, with Southern
Shorthaul Railroad for the first time loading two grain trains at the same time on the broad gauge in Victoria. Up until now a single 34 wagon train has been the max, but recently SSR has transferred more BGKF hoppers from standard to broad gauge.
Today two 21 hopper trains have been loaded, at Woorinen for Emerald Grain, and at Charlton, for Allied Pinnacle.
In the the early days of SSR's broad gauge operations in Victoria, former Victorian Railways S317/S302 head #9198 loaded grain from Sea Lake to Kensington (Melbourne), near Charlton.

Very nice, looking just right in that blue shade typical of the period. I prefer the look of these single-piece headlights to the double-lens and chrome surround arrangement seen on the next one along.
Appears to have been a UK car from new, and if it's still on the original plate then it would seem to have only crossed the border from Cambs since new.
Appears to be an import, first registered here in 2003. DVLA lists it with an engine size of 3000cc.

S300 and S311 display rare good timing as they roll through a gloomy Mascot with T280 freight from Yennora to Port Botany. An arriving Qantas plane helps set the scene overhead.
S300 and S311 were on hire to P&O Trans Australia to supplement the companies own 44 Class. With both 4471 and 4477 out of service on this particular day, it was a stroke of good luck to see a pair of ex-VR streamliners taking over the running of T280 instead.
EDIT: Thanks to Dean for some information on the plane. The plane was called "Yananyi Dreaming", and was repainted out of that livery in September 2014.
