1979 - 1991

The streamlined S-Class locomotives are finally finished (unless we modify them further)! I have been helping Teunis with them for the last couple of months. Teunis has built two locos (301 and 302) and I have built a third (303) to go with the non-streamlined S that I built last year.

Here S 302 Edward Henty is posed next to unstreamlined S 300.

Four S Class locomotives express passenger locomotives were built by the Victorian Railways, entering service in 1928. With the introduction of the new Spirit of Progress service in 1937 (providing the Victorian leg of the Melbourne to Sydney express), the locomotives were streamlined and received a new blue and gold livery and larger tenders for the express run from Melbourne to Albury on the New South Wales border.

Espee Rail Service empty scrap metal train from Port Botany to Canberra sweeps into Goulburn behind double ex-Victorian S class bulldogs. The S class double were required as both the trailing VLs were facing the wrong way, and it was also a means to utilise the bulldogs while getting them back home to Canberra.

S301 crosses the Barry road level crossing at Somerton. My notes show that 301 was on standard gauge on this day. 4-3-1986

Owned at the time by CFCLA, S311 is stabled at the Islington Workshops on 18-9-14 . The Two CFCLA S class locos had been in South Australia for a while working on hire to Qube working ballast trains and also Balco workings between Bowmans and Outer Harbor.

Not sure if the rope is doing a lot of good holding the exhaust up....

I presume that being badged just 'S' means this has carb(s) rather than injection?

Clouds race by overhead as we find ourselves standing in the mud admiring S303 and T357 in the loop at Camperdown waiting for a cross with the down Warrnambool passenger train. The green glow of the LED signal behind the train is perhaps the only modern touch in this scene.
