The Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9 is the top-of-the-line version of the W116 model S-Class luxury saloon. It was built by Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart, and based on the LWB version of the W116 chassis. It featured the largest engine of any non-American production car post WW2. The 6.9 was first shown to the motoring press at the Geneva Motor Show in 1974, and produced between 1975 and 1981. The 6.9 is among the first vehicles ever produced with electronically controlled anti-lock brakes, first introduced by Mercedes and Bosch in 1978. Only 7.380 examples left the factory. This example was previously owned by the French pop star Claude François.

'Nobody who viewed or evaluated the W140 when it first appeared was in any doubt that Stuttgart's engineers had excelled themselves once again: the car was a technological tour de force, which had been designed with typical Mercedes thoroughness and was built to the usual impeccable standards.' – James Taylor, 'Mercedes-Benz Cars of the 1990s'.
To say that the new W140 S-Class bristled with new technology would be a gross understatement, for at the time of their introduction in October 1991 there was no denying that these were the most advanced passenger cars in the world. With production of the saloon models getting underway, Mercedes announced the planned upmarket coupés at the Detroit Motor Show in January 1992. Built on a shorter wheelbase, they were available at first with only two alternative engines: a 5.0-litre V8 or 6.0-litre V12, and shared their mechanical underpinnings with the W140 saloons. Starting life as the 500 SEC and 600 SEC respectively, they were renamed S 500 and S 600 in 1993, and CL 500 and CL 600 in 1996.
This magnificent Mercedes-Benz CL 500 was ordered new by the current owner and delivered by via the Belgian dealership, Vereenooghe. Every four years the owner would buy a brand new Mercedes, and he always returned his current car to the dealership; with this car, he just could not part with it! Boasting every conceivable option, including overnight heating and a sunroof, this car cost a fortune when new - four million Belgian francs - which is the equivalent of € 100.000 today. Having covered only 47.000 kilometres from new, the car is presented in excellent condition throughout, with an interior that still smells like new. Finished in possibly the best colour combination for the model, it comes with Belgian registration papers and all the original books.

"The Mercedes 220 SE coupé is a very fine engineering achievement. Not only does it provide fast and economical transports for four and their luggage, but outstanding roadholding and riding qualities make this a car which is a pleasure to drive hard, and one in which it is safe and comfortable to do so. Furthermore, it has superb brakes and a high standard of mechanical refinement." – Autocar.
Mercedes-Benz debuted four new models at the Frankfurt Show in 1959 - the 220 SEb among them - all of which shared the same basic unitary-construction bodyshell and all-round independent suspension. This new 220 family moved Mercedes-Benz's styling into the modern era; longer than their predecessors, these elegant newcomers featured a wider radiator shell, wrap-around windscreen, enlarged rear window and vertically stacked twin headlamps. The new 220 SEb retained the fuel-injected, single-overhead-camshaft engine of the previous 220 SE, though maximum power of the 2,195cc six was increased by five horsepower to 120bhp (DIN). Top speed was now 172km/h with 100km/h attainable in under 14 seconds.
Coupé and Cabriolet models appeared in 1960 and 1961 respectively, minus the already dated-looking tail fins of the saloon. More modern in style, the luxurious 220 SEb Coupé and Cabriolet were better appointed too, being equipped as standard with a rev counter, leather upholstery, and four-speed automatic transmission with floor-mounted gearchange lever. Girling servo-assisted front disc brakes were fitted from the start of production, a benefit not enjoyed by the saloon until 1962. By the time production ceased in October 1965, fewer than 17,000 220 SEb Coupé and Cabriolet models had been manufactured, of which only 2,729 were Cabriolets, and today these stylish and luxuriously equipped Grand Tourers are highly prized.
This superbly restored Mercedes-Benz 220 SEb Cabriolet was delivered new in Germany. A matching-numbers example equipped with the desirable manual 'floor shift' gearbox, the Mercedes was sold new to a member of the United States' armed forces, who, it is presumed, took the car to the USA.
The present owner discovered this 220 SEb Cabriolet while searching for rare spare parts for his Mercedes-Benz 300 Adenauer Cabriolet D. Visiting the classic car fair in Stuttgart in March 2015, he became enchanted by this Mercedes 220 SEb cabriolet, which he considered to be the most perfectly restored vehicle on show. Delivered new in Germany, retaining matching numbers, and restored to concours standard, it met all of the perfectionist owner's exacting criteria and duly became part of his private collection on 1st March 2016. Since then, some 1,000 kilometres have been covered, including a recent trip to the Coppa Classic Concours in Belgium where it won the award for 'Best Restored Car'. Finished in the attractive colour combination of Burgundy with tan interior, and guaranteed to turn heads wherever it goes, this quite exceptional soft-top 4-seat Mercedes is well-documented and offered with all its original books; M-B Datakart; a selection of restoration photographs; and Belgian registration documents.
The Mercedes-Benz W140 is a series of flagship vehicles that were manufactured by the German automotive company Mercedes-Benz from 1991 to 1998.
As with each generation of S-Class, a plethora of innovations in technology, climate protection, and creature comfort was introduced. Those innovations later trickled down to smaller C-Class and E-Class models over time.
The three body types are carried over from the W126: four-door sedan/saloon in two wheelbase lengths and one two-door coupé. The model types are assigned as W140 for standard wheelbase, V140 for long wheelbase, and C140 for coupé. In 1996, S-Class coupé was renamed as CL-Class and spun off from S-Class. A longer Pullman version with 4140 mm wheelbase was introduced in 1995 with two engine choices (S 500 Pullman and S 600 Pullman). The S 600 Pullman could be ordered with armour package.
Shown here is the second-lowest selling version of the W140 range, the short wheelbase 600 SE (later known as S600). This featured the shorter of the two saloon bodystyles, paired with the largest (standard engine), the new to Mercedes-Benz, M120 6.0 L V12. This engine featured 4 valves per cylinder and DOHC, producing a mighty 600 kW.
As an early series W140 car, it can be identified by the amber turn signals.
Though somewhat brutal looking, the W140 once again cemented Mercedes' claim to build the best car in the world.
The W140 range, would later go on to provide the basis for the reintroduction of the Maybach marque in 2002.
I was fortunate enough to attend the public launch of the W140 range in Sydney in 1991 - a spectacular affair, thousands of people, food, drink and entertainment.

Mercedes-Benz' new 3.5-litre V8 engine debuted at the 1969 Frankfurt Show in the 280 SE coupé and convertible, and the 300 SEL saloon. An over-square design featuring a cast-iron block and aluminium-alloy cylinder heads, each equipped with a single overhead camshaft, this all-new, state-of-the-art M116 power unit produced 200bhp (DIN) at 5,800rpm courtesy of Bosch electronic fuel injection and transistorised ignition. This was some 40 horsepower more than those models' existing 2.8-litre six, so performance was greatly increased.
From 1971 the new V8 was available in the 280 SE saloon, the marriage resulting in a fast and well equipped 'gentleman's express' combining 200km/h performance with considerable luxury. Running gear was pretty much state-of-the-art from the time, consisting of independent suspension all round and four-wheel dual-circuit disc brakes.
The 3.5-litre version of the 280 SE saloon typifies the resurgence of larger-engined Mercedes-Benz models that began in the late 1960s and early 1970s when the progressive easing of fiscal constraints, which had dissuaded customers from buying cars with large capacity engines, encouraged the German manufacturer to offer bigger, more potent power units. One of the rarer mass-produced Mercedes-Benz saloons - a little over 11,000 being built between March 1971 and September 1972 - the 280 SE 3.5 is today much sought-after by collectors.
This floor-shift automatic transmission 280 SE 3.5 saloon is equipped to an enviable specification, boasting a sunroof and a gorgeous Pullman interior. Owned for many years by a passionate German collector, the car was purchased in Germany by the current Belgian owner some 7 years ago. At the time of purchase the previous owner was told that the car was used by the Mercedes-Benz Factory as a demonstrator during the Munich Olympic Games in 1972 to convey the athletes. Described by the vendor as in excellent restored condition, and in full working order, this rare and supremely elegant modern-era Mercedes-Benz is offered with German registration papers.
