With the 300 SD of 1978, Mercedes introduced the first diesel car to the luxury class. A turbodiesel engine, used for the first time in a production car, ensured adequate output. At the same time the 300 SD was economical enough to improve the corporate average fuel economy of all Mercedes cars in the USA and meet the stringent American regulations.

The Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9 is the top-of-the-line version of the W116 model S-Class luxury saloon. It was built by Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart, and based on the LWB version of the W116 chassis. It featured the largest engine of any non-American production car post WW2. The 6.9 was first shown to the motoring press at the Geneva Motor Show in 1974, and produced between 1975 and 1981. The 6.9 is among the first vehicles ever produced with electronically controlled anti-lock brakes, first introduced by Mercedes and Bosch in 1978. Only 7.380 examples left the factory. This example was previously owned by the French pop star Claude François.

'Nobody who viewed or evaluated the W140 when it first appeared was in any doubt that Stuttgart's engineers had excelled themselves once again: the car was a technological tour de force, which had been designed with typical Mercedes thoroughness and was built to the usual impeccable standards.' – James Taylor, 'Mercedes-Benz Cars of the 1990s'.
To say that the new W140 S-Class bristled with new technology would be a gross understatement, for at the time of their introduction in October 1991 there was no denying that these were the most advanced passenger cars in the world. With production of the saloon models getting underway, Mercedes announced the planned upmarket coupés at the Detroit Motor Show in January 1992. Built on a shorter wheelbase, they were available at first with only two alternative engines: a 5.0-litre V8 or 6.0-litre V12, and shared their mechanical underpinnings with the W140 saloons. Starting life as the 500 SEC and 600 SEC respectively, they were renamed S 500 and S 600 in 1993, and CL 500 and CL 600 in 1996.
This magnificent Mercedes-Benz CL 500 was ordered new by the current owner and delivered by via the Belgian dealership, Vereenooghe. Every four years the owner would buy a brand new Mercedes, and he always returned his current car to the dealership; with this car, he just could not part with it! Boasting every conceivable option, including overnight heating and a sunroof, this car cost a fortune when new - four million Belgian francs - which is the equivalent of € 100.000 today. Having covered only 47.000 kilometres from new, the car is presented in excellent condition throughout, with an interior that still smells like new. Finished in possibly the best colour combination for the model, it comes with Belgian registration papers and all the original books.
