With the 300 SD of 1978, Mercedes introduced the first diesel car to the luxury class. A turbodiesel engine, used for the first time in a production car, ensured adequate output. At the same time the 300 SD was economical enough to improve the corporate average fuel economy of all Mercedes cars in the USA and meet the stringent American regulations.

Mercedes-Benz' new 3.5-litre V8 engine debuted at the 1969 Frankfurt Show in the 280 SE coupé and convertible, and the 300 SEL saloon. An over-square design featuring a cast-iron block and aluminium-alloy cylinder heads, each equipped with a single overhead camshaft, this all-new, state-of-the-art M116 power unit produced 200bhp (DIN) at 5,800rpm courtesy of Bosch electronic fuel injection and transistorised ignition. This was some 40 horsepower more than those models' existing 2.8-litre six, so performance was greatly increased.

From 1971 the new V8 was available in the 280 SE saloon, the marriage resulting in a fast and well equipped 'gentleman's express' combining 200km/h performance with considerable luxury. Running gear was pretty much state-of-the-art from the time, consisting of independent suspension all round and four-wheel dual-circuit disc brakes.

The 3.5-litre version of the 280 SE saloon typifies the resurgence of larger-engined Mercedes-Benz models that began in the late 1960s and early 1970s when the progressive easing of fiscal constraints, which had dissuaded customers from buying cars with large capacity engines, encouraged the German manufacturer to offer bigger, more potent power units. One of the rarer mass-produced Mercedes-Benz saloons - a little over 11,000 being built between March 1971 and September 1972 - the 280 SE 3.5 is today much sought-after by collectors.

This floor-shift automatic transmission 280 SE 3.5 saloon is equipped to an enviable specification, boasting a sunroof and a gorgeous Pullman interior. Owned for many years by a passionate German collector, the car was purchased in Germany by the current Belgian owner some 7 years ago. At the time of purchase the previous owner was told that the car was used by the Mercedes-Benz Factory as a demonstrator during the Munich Olympic Games in 1972 to convey the athletes. Described by the vendor as in excellent restored condition, and in full working order, this rare and supremely elegant modern-era Mercedes-Benz is offered with German registration papers.

When I was younger, I quite fancied the idea of having a W108/109. Not just any, but the rather nice, 280 SE 3.5 with a 200 hp V8.

At the time, they were worth about $6,000. Which was, unfortunately, about $6,000 more than I had. I had also been cautioned, that running a 25 year old Mercedes-Benz, low-volume V8 was probably pretty expensive as well. Having just looked them up, they are now worth about $35,000, though they are now an additional 30 years old and have probably cost a lot of money to keep them running that long.

Still, lovely. The range launched in 1965, initially with a 2.5 L inline-six, producing 130 PS in the carburettor 250S, of 150 PS in the injected 250 SE. A larger engined 3.0L was fitted to the W109 300SE/SEL, which used air suspension. In this application, the engine produced 170 PS.

In 1967 the 2.8L replaced the 2.5L lifting power to 140 PS and 160 PS for the 280 S and 280 SE respectively, while the 3.5L v8 also joined the range at this time.

Those crazy people who wanted a lot more go, could, from 1966, buy the limited volume 300 SEL 6.3, with the 250 PS / 500 Nm V8 from the flagship W100 600 model. These are probably worth most of $100 K these days.

Key appeal to this kind of car isn't the speed, but the style. 5.0m long, wide, glassy cabins, leather and wood, plenty of space, and plenty of class. There was one down the road from my house even, a pale blue 250 S, which gracefully glided down the street.

The Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9 is the top-of-the-line version of the W116 model S-Class luxury saloon. It was built by Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart, and based on the LWB version of the W116 chassis. It featured the largest engine of any non-American production car post WW2. The 6.9 was first shown to the motoring press at the Geneva Motor Show in 1974, and produced between 1975 and 1981. The 6.9 is among the first vehicles ever produced with electronically controlled anti-lock brakes, first introduced by Mercedes and Bosch in 1978. Only 7.380 examples left the factory. This example was previously owned by the French pop star Claude François.
