Its only when a famous type which used to be around in vast numbers has gone and time instills a mental buffer zone that you notice characteristics you'd forgotten about until presented with another example later in life. So it was with a Class 50 Diesel locomotive a few weeks ago, but more recently the Leopard in the picture.
Plaxton Supreme IV bodied Leyland Leopard KAD 359V was strutting its stuff around Southport last weekend in anything but a discreet manner. I don't think it could have done otherwise if it had tried. The beautifully presented ex Black & White Motorways coach wearing National White made its presence known to anyone within a half mile radius. The crisp clattery engine note when pulling away gave way to a deep bellow as each gearchange approached. These were the sound effects I recall from my youth, not the apologetic hushed whirrings of the modern Diesel bus where the fan noise often drowns out the shoe box size engine. An environmental vandal to some, but what a great sound track for the discerning!

Preserved Leyland PS2 with Burlingham bodywork at Cley-Next-the-Sea Norfolk July 2013 during a running day event held in association with the heritage North Norfolk Railway. New to Bournemouth Corporation in 1949 as fleet number 45.
1951 Bedford OB in the livery of Kenzie's, now owned by Dews coaches, has a run out to Rippingale and is seen heading back to Bourne during the Delaine Heritage running day.
This rather splendid Bristol VR with Eastern Coachworks body is now a resident in the North East Derbyshire area. Apparently in the hands of Clair’s of Clay Cross, it began its life during April 1981 and ran with SMS until sold to Brighton&Hove in 1986. It was operated by them until 2000 during which time it was re-engined with a Gardner 6LXB. The bus then passed through the hands of a number of different ownerships until August 2024 when it joined Portsmouth City Coaches for further preservation.
Then barely a couple of weeks ago it migrated north and made its maiden local voyage last Sunday (25th) on the annual ‘Jolly Boys Day Out’ running day organised by the Chesterfield 123 and Riding with Rodoeste preservation groups.
And for its age it appears to be in pretty damn good condition, its Gardner lump pulling like a train.
Nearside aspect during one of the photo stops above Fernilee between Buxton and Whalley Bridge during the over 100-miles of fault free running through South West Derbyshire and Staffordshire.
Catch it if you can, it’s a beauty.

Catch it if you can, it’s a beauty. And the electrics certainly work okay.

Dinnington, Bus Station, 10/09/1994.
The Southampton & District Transport Heritage Trust provided today's entertainment in the form of a Farewell to Southampton's Red Buses running day. With the busy hub in Pound Tree Road, there were 3 routes to sample using 10 preserved former Southampton buses ranging from a 1951 Guy Arab III to a 1999 Dennis Dart. A great day out and a chance to catch up with a great many people!!
The 9th Alton Classic Bus & Country Pub Running Day took place in and around Alton in Hampshire on Saturday 14th July 2018. The annual event is organised by the Hants & Surrey 'Bristol RE' Group who run 4 different routes serving 20 local pubs.
My shots this year were taken in Alton, Chawton, East Worldham, Hawkley, Holybourne, Selbourne and Upper & Lower Farringdon.
I should have been there today. Damn it, we should ALL have been there today. Ah well, here's to next year. Stay safe.
Preserved Strathtay Scottish SL43 (XSS 43Y). Kirkby Stephen, 20/04/2019, posted 11/04/2020.
Preserved 1950 Bristol LL6B with Eastern Coachworks body in Wimborne Dorset April 1989 during a bus and coach running day based on Poole. During 1961 it was rebuilt from a Portsmouth Aviation bodied L6G and the seating designation changed from C28F to FB39F.
I didn't notice until posting that the passing Merc features a cherished registration from a Routemaster - RM1058, now 204 UXJ.
