Taking a bathroom break during my drive from Dayton to Indianapolis via the northern suburbs of Cincinnati. The drive was quite an easy one besides some brief but heavy downpours of rain.

Curious little tree growing out of a rock...apparently been there since the 1800's.

We stopped here on our way to Burning Man in 2004, and decided to stop again this time.

What a great place to wake up! See the mountain view and the scenic little pond.

The Polk County Safety Rest Area on US-59, about 100 miles from where I started in Sugar Land. US-59 is now mostly 4-lane through this area and has been made limited access. It is a pretty nice spot, renovated in 2007.

Switzerland, SC- I-95 N Bound encounters a parking area for Trucks Only in 1 mile. Cars must use the rest area in 34 miles as only commercial vehicles allowed at this stop.

People who are from this part of the country tell me that they love it, so I spent a little time at this Rest Area, trying to appreciate the beauty specific to this area.

They are constructed with eight concrete poles each weighing 6½ tons and are rectilinear in form. The poles are spaced equidistantly and

attached at the top with steel plates. The circumference of the tipi’s base is 35 feet. There is a

three-foot opening where the lodgepoles converge. The tipis are 56 feet tall. Sioux Falls

architect Ward Whitwam designed the tipis for the state rest areas. Constructed in 1977 and listed on the NRHP. This one is located at the first I 90 rest area eastbound near Spearfish SD.
