Grass Lake Rest Area California

This is a view of the bay was taken in the picnic table area at a highway rest stop in Clearwater, Florida. You would think that this would be a wonderful spot to take a break from driving. However, the strong odor of the red tide, which is harmful algae bloom in the water, along with dozens of large dead fish rotting on the shoreline because of the bloom, forcefully diminishes one's enjoyment of the beautiful vistas of the bay.

This was taken at the scenic view point on the West bound side of I-84, about 50 miles East of Biggs Oregon. (Just a guess on the miles)

The sun was maybe an hour from setting, and mostly obscured by clouds to the left of this shot, well out of frame.

Almost forgot to mention, that's the Columbia River, Washington State on the other side, and Oregon where I was.

The tugboat and barge were why I'd stopped, then after taking a few pictures I saw three young men, collage age, one flying a drone. It was a small one, and much quieter than I'd expected. Talked to them for about 5 minutes as the one continued flying. I've been considering getting one, now it's a definite. So many places I'd like to get pictures from, and a drone is the only way.

So that's my next gift to myself. Sometimes I think I've spoiled myself.

In Boise Idaho tonight and heading to Phoenix to get my truck serviced at our terminal there.

Have a safe weekend friends.

Here's a link to a selfie taken back in 2010 I believe.

Frankreich, Rastplatz, Mai 2018

I was driving home and I pulled over at a random Rest Area on the site of I-85 to get my 365. I didn't know where I was going to take it at, all I knew was that I had a good feeling about where my intuition was telling me to go.

The area I found was amazing, and so serene.

Story of my life right now.

Dear friends, I'm going to be out of full access to Flickr next 7 days, so do not expect from me much attention to your works during these days ;) . Will see you soon ... have fun ..

Route 97 - Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway - Grass Lake Rest Area

It's always nice to pull over for a while anywhere in the Riverland area. This is the carpark alongside the Walker Flat ferry crossing over the Murray River. It is lined with wonderful low cliffs for many miles. The little township is full of riverside shacks and homes and is very popular with travellers coming up from Adelaide which is around an hour's drive to the west.

This portion of the trail is Post 11 - Tamarack and interpretive Station rest area that allows visitors to enjoy the surroundings in the tamarack tree'd area. The tamarack is a conifer but one that sheds it's needle in the fall. The needles turn from a green shade to a brilliant yellow before falling to the ground. The photo shows the tamarack needles covering the trail in yellow.

High energy ruby-throated hummingbird stops to take a break in the humid summer weather.

Glenwood Canyon formed by the Colorado River, this is I-70 passing through a narrow canyon known for rock slides and weather issues. This section of the interstate highway is an engineering marvel due to all the obstacles that required consideration to complete. Artistically it’s an unusual but attractive addition to a landscape thanks to the double deck, banking, curvature created by the construction used in order to preserve the natural formations while satisfying the structural requirements of highway safety.

Arizona Sunset. I was driving south on Interstate 10 and saw these clouds. I stopped at a rest area and snapped this image before I lost all of the light. So for hand held and rushed set up up, not too awfully bad.

Took this picture from my truck just before leaving the Jefferson Rest Area in Oregon. It's about 15 miles South of Salem, Oregon. I talked with this gentleman for a few minutes prior to getting into my truck. Very friendly. The shot was a spur of the moment thing and I only had time for one picture because he got up right after I snapped this shot. I was attempting to change my spot focus area because I noticed I'd chopped off one foot, but wasn't fast enough, he was heading back to his car. A little annoying, but I like the picture anyway. Please pretend I composed it this way on purpose, artistic license right!

Oh if you want to see what he is looking at, I've included a link. We had been talking about the scene just before I headed back to my truck.

The Missouri Route 66 Welcome Center rest area is at mile marker 109 on I-44 in both directions.

Whether you need to stop or not, you MUST stop at this rest area! Behind the building is a set of picnic tables set up as attractions along Route 66.

It makes a nice break to stretch your legs and admire the different storefronts at each picnic table.

While at a rest area pullout along I-40 as I headed west on my drive to Joshua Tree National Park. The view is looking to the north-northwest to the New York Mountains. Using the peakbagger site, I was able to identify a few of the peaks, but Table Top was the most identifiable one and in the image center. My thought on composing this image was to zoom in to this one section of the mountain range and center it while keeping my Nikon SLR camera more or less leveled-on. The idea would be to have the sage brush another plant-life heading off to the horizon, and the blue skies and clouds above to balance that.

Another "drive by" photo taken from the car window as we traveled I-65 through the state of Alabama on our way north to Ohio and Michigan.

South Canol Road Yukon Territory

English on the next photo.

Old pay phone box at a rest area; no phone in there- just the box as a relic

This is an 8-exposure panoramic image. I didn't have a tripod handy so I used the camera's built in spirit level in a freehand attempt to keep the horizon level while moving over the landscape from left to right. The resulting image was stitched together on my laptop using Adobe Lightroom Classic. I think the end result worked out pretty nicely. The original photos were taken at a rest stop off the highway east of Nipigon Ontario. We were tired and just decided to pull off for a rest only to discover that this was an amazing spot for a view of Nipigon Bay on Lake Superior.

Cities and towns I've been to since December 24th. In Lakeville right now, and heading to Minooka IL tomorrow, then back to Minnesota and then hopefully home... we'll see.

It's been awhile since I've been to this part of the country, and even traveled on a couple of roads I'd never been on. Nice to revisit areas, and even nicer to see a few new ones. New Orleans, a first, but just a passing through the edges. Same with most large cities, don't need big tractor trailers in the middle of the city. I think Miami is the only larger more famous city I haven't skirted through with a big truck. Only a few small bits of Interstate highway I haven't driven on. Like the song, I've been everywhere man.

Photography wise, I've been taking pictures when I can, like the one you're seeing now. This was local nature preserve in Iowa off I-35 next to a very nice rest area/visitors center. Walked a couple of miles and took a dozen or so pictures. Was surprised temperature was in the low 50's. Most of the ice on the lake had melted and all the snow was gone.

In Minnesota now, just South of Minneapolis and not much snow on the ground, temperatures in the 20's and the lakes are still frozen. Very windy. No picture's today, but hopefully something tomorrow or when I return in a couple of days. Maybe get lucky in Illinois or Wisconsin, just never know, but I'm prepared and ready, eyes constantly on the look out for something interesting.

Got a few hours of free time now, so I'll post this and like always do as many visits on Flickr as time permits. Hope everyone is off to a great new year, be safe, watch out for the big trucks.

Route 97 - Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway - Grass Lake Rest Area - California

So much color in one place

It's interesting to see how the 'lower half" looks like...haha!

Actually, there are some portions of US 1 that are two lanes only so there's no place to put up rest areas. In this particular spot, you have to exit the interstate and drive under it to relieve yourself (in the proper rest rooms, of course). It doesn't hurt, either, that there are drinking bars, restaurants and beach resorts around those rest rooms! :P

.

August 1st I found myself racing up I-17 for some storm action and shot a few nice bolts around sunset west of Camp Verde. I ended up back in town and had to decide east or north, so I went north up the 17 and got really hosed on places to pull over and shoot with any good view. So the popular rest area north of town was the best place I could find, and I wandered over near the freeway to shoot back down I-17 to see what happened. Nice color in the sky and actually got a decent strike!

The Praia dos Pescadores viewpoint, located in Ericeira, a fishing village on the west coast of Portugal, offers a privileged view of the Atlantic Ocean and the region's rocky cliffs. With a minimalist design, including tables and benches in shades of orange and white, this space is ideal for relaxing and observing the landscape. Ericeira, recognized as a World Surfing Reserve since 2011 and famous for its importance in Portuguese maritime history, combines historical heritage and natural beauty. This viewpoint is also a place of historical importance, being the starting point of King Manuel II's flight into exile in 1910, during the Implantation of the Republic, and offers a unique perspective on the beach, where fishing boats gather and the waves attract surfers.
