VPG's Vishay Foil Resistors brand (VFR) has released a new video that compares the stability and accuracy of three different current sense precision resistor technologies used in solar panels: thick film, metal band, and next-generation Bulk Metal® Z-Foil. So I had this integrated circuit for a VU meter lying around and I wanted to see if I could make it work. So I built this circuit, but I didn't have any way on hand to connect it to music. So I created a voltage divider with two resistors except one is a photo-resistor. Now the voltage (and the reading on the VU meter) should be dependent on the amount of light the photoresistor sees. So with a finger over the end of the wand, all the LEDs are dark. Point it at a light bulb and the LEDs light up :-) Not all that exciting but it works, so mission accomplished! :-)
In this picture, it's in dot mode and the ambient light is enough to light the third LED. If you point the light wand thing at the lit-up LED, it freaks out a bit :-)

Hidden behind the lens is a resistor, but you can see the wires which connect the selenium cell to the lens barrel. The dead meter in fact came mostly back to life while unscrewing the retaining ring, so probably a dirty connection somewhere.
