A surprise red panda birth at China's Taiyuan Zoo started on a sad note, but ultimately led to a happy ending.
An expectant mom gave birth to two babies in front of crowds at the zoo on June 25 without any warning – in fact, according to the U.K.'s Times Online, caretakers didn't even know she was pregnant due to her "plump body and bushy hair." She was so spooked by the crowd present during the birth, the mother immediately rejected her cubs, forcing zookeepers to scramble for a surrogate. They found one in a lactating mixed-breed dog belonging to a local farmer, who took in the cubs as her own.
Now nearly a month old – and both 8 inches long – the unnamed cubs stay with their "mom" constantly, just as they would in the wild. They have missed important milestones, like opening their eyes at around 18 days, but caretakers continue to watch them for important vital signs. Red panda cubs generally stay with their mom for 90 days after birth, though it's not yet known if their surrogate will take care of them for that long. But for now, the cubs are getting the nutrition – and love – that they need.
Sadly, the dog, who had just given birth to a baby of her own, rejected her own puppy after taking over as mom to the red pandas. Thankfully, zoo employees stepped in to help raise the little one.

The title is a little play on words - spotted this red dragonfly and it reminded me of the Red Baron - so decided on the title above!

This seems strange that on a holiday, you would go to a cemetery... twice. But this was to photograph the Red Squirrels that are resident there and wild. They are apparently becoming more and more tame... these came to within a few metres.
