The Red-Legged Honeycreeper in the Lowlands of Costa Rica. I especially like this image with him excited and the feathers in the head standing up.

Who would think a rose so sweet Would dry and crumble at the feet And blooms that scent the night and day Would steal a heart, then fade away

Missing the flowers of summer - already!

Red Grouse chilling in the heather on the northumberland moors.

Red-browed Finch snacking on grass seeds. I had to crawl on my stomach ever so slowly towards this little guy and was able to get reasonably close enough to get this shot.

MIND The EDGE - look close and you will see some nasty ice spikes on the white crater wall- wind blown spikes of ice rather than soft snow !

Red Crater and Mt Ngauruhoe are the most recently formed features on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing with Red Crater formed about 3000 years ago. It lies within a scoria cone which rests on top of the older Tongariro lava flows. The red colour is due to the presence of oxidised iron in the rock. The volcanic activity from Red Crater was reported between 1855 and 1890. The dike on the Southern Wall has been exposed by erosion; lava would have flowed through this dike and poured into the Oturere Valley.

Red-necked Grebe's apparently starting a nesting project. I did not know that they will build a floating nest of rotting plant material, continuously adding material to it.
