Why are loons eyes red? The red is caused by a pigment in the retina that filters light when loons dive beneath the waters surface and allows for sight.

From yesterday’s morning session. That red eye is amazing. It was close to shore and I managed to use the reflection of a green canoe and a yellow laser.

From Wikipedia:

The Great Northern Loon, Great Northern Diver, or Common Loon (Gavia immer), is a large member of the loon, or diver, family of birds. The species is known as a Common Loon in North America and the Great Northern Diver in Eurasia

Breeding adults have a black head, white underparts, and a checkered black-and-white mantle. Male and female loons have identical plumage. Non-breeding plumage is brownish, with the chin and foreneck white. The bill is black-blue and held horizontally. The bill colour and angle distinguish this species from the similar Yellow-billed Loon.

I really love this dress, I have quite a few pictures from the same shoot. I think this shows the heels very nicely. I am a huge fan of Mary Jane style heels.

Red Lacewing(Cethosia biblis) butterfly. This is one of the rarest butterflies which look more colorful and impressive when viewed from the rear. That is to say, the full opened wings are not that impressive in comparison. Here it is, captured from three different angles.

TGIF and it is time to relax and "TAKE IT EASY" and hum along.

I used my 500mm lens because I like the effect, but you don't need a lens like that... see below.... sorry Nigel I couldn't resist!

Call me slow, but I've only just realised you can comment on a picture without actually opening it......... definitely a backwards step IMO... I had been wondering how faves and comments appeared without any views! Now they've changed the way views are counted as well, apparently guessing that we wanted to see something, though it may have just been one of many pictures on a page in a group etc. Definitely dodgy......And those people doing that won't even see that I've written this, or any other explanation that goes with a picture, so they won't even know that I've explained that this is NOT A WILD SQUIRREL.

The Hispano HA-1112-M4L “Buchon” is essentially a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine Messerschmitt Bf109. The Luftwaffe-manned Condor Legion upon its return to Germany in 1939, left around 40 Bf109B/E’s for the Spanish Air Force to use. In 1943 the Spanish government agreed to licence production with Messerschmitt to produce 200 Bf109G’s. As the war worsened, Germany was unable to supply the remaining components for the airframes. Improving relations between the Spanish government and the West from 1952, saw the powerful Rolls Royce Merlin engine sourced from Britain fitted to the airframe. The combination of ex-German airframe and British power plant was successful.

G-AWHC is the sole surviving two seat variant built by Hispano Aviacion in Saville in 1954. This aircraft was one of 27 purchased at auction from the Spanish Air Force by Spitfire Productions for use in the making of the 1968 movie “The Battle of Britain”. Luftwaffe Ace Adolf Galland flew G-AWHC during the movie. The aircraft was moved to Texas after filming and lay in storage there until being moved by Air Leasing LTD to the UK for restoration.

This Red Tail has been hanging around our pasture eating mice and voles since we cut our hay last week. This rock, just high enough to give him commanding view of the pasture, is his favorite perch. When he spots something moving in the pasture he goes airborne, as shown in the next image.

A Red Panda, seen in the Birmingham Nature Centre, England.

The red panda is dwarfed by the black-and-white giant that shares its name. These pandas typically grow to the size of a house cat, though their big, bushy tails add an additional 18 inches (46 centimeters). The pandas use their ringed tails as wraparound blankets in the chilly mountain heights.

The red panda shares the giant panda's rainy, high-altitude forest habitat, but has a wider range. Red pandas live in the mountains of Nepal and northern Myanmar (Burma), as well as in central China.

These animals spend most of their lives in trees and even sleep aloft. When foraging, they are most active at night as well as in the gloaming hours of dusk and dawn.

Red pandas have a taste for bamboo but, unlike their larger relatives, they eat many other foods as well—fruit, acorns, roots, and eggs. Like giant pandas, they have an extended wrist bone that functions almost like a thumb and greatly aids their grip.

They are shy and solitary except when mating. Females give birth in the spring and summer, typically to one to four young. Young red pandas remain in their nests for about 90 days, during which time their mother cares for them. (Males take little or no interest in their offspring.)

Red pandas are endangered, victims of deforestation. Their natural space is shrinking as more and more forests are destroyed by logging and the spread of agriculture.

Red Dead Redemption 2_20181029121049

I liked how the tiny red ladybug still caught my attention in this sea of green.

Took hundreds of grouse pics yesterday and found flaws in most of them. These included: cluttered backgrounds, grouse not paying attention (lol), over exposed/underexposed grouse, soft grouse (i think due to slowish shutter speed 1/200 sec). Some of these cant be helped and are part of wildlife photography fun.

The light was good and I used spot metering to expose the grouse. At times this worked well but it has been pointed out (by my photography coach and 4th favorite uncle) that on occasions the white feet of grouse can burn out due to over exposure. This was the case in a number of my pictures.

Could anyone tell me whether on shoots like this they would use spot metering or evaluative? I have left my camera on spot metering since i bought it. Any tips would be appreciated...

The "Land of no Rain" aka Samburu National Park, has abundant Red-billed Hornbill's. We saw numerous of these lovely birds during the recent three day trip there but very few of the other Hornbill species found in the region.

It has been over 6 months since I posted a Red Kite despite the fact I can take shots of them most weekends or the similar Black Kite. Time to do one from a day less gloomy than at present.

Red kites disappeared in England by the end of the nineteenth

century because of human actions. They were killed in the belief

that they attacked lambs and gamebirds (e.g. pheasants).

In fact, they pose no threat to sheep farming or game rearing, although

they will eat dead lambs and pheasants.

A few pairs survived in Wales. In 1989 a plan to bring the red kite

back to England and Scotland was begun. Between 1989 and 1993,

chicks from Spain and Sweden were released at specially protected

sites and allowed to fly free.
