The Red-winged Blackbird,an abundant permanent resident of Florida, breeds in
wetlands throughout most of the continent south of the tundra. Of the 14 recognized
subspecies in North America, 4 breed in Florida.
Inland, Red-winged Blackbirds occur around freshwater ponds and marshes in natural, agricultural,
and suburban settings. Along the coast and in the Keys,
they breed in salt marshes, mangroves, and buttonwoods. Their food consists of the
seeds of weeds and grasses, various grains, and insects and other invertebrates'
The common name for the Red-winged Blackbird is taken from the mainly black adult male's distinctive red shoulder patches, or "epaulets", which are visible when the bird is flying or displaying. At rest, the male also shows a pale yellow wingbar. The female is blackish-brown and paler below. The female is considerably smaller than the male.
I found this male at Joe Overstreet landing at Lake Kissimmee.
Osceola County, Florida.
** EXPLORE May 21, 2009 # 317 Thank you my friends! **
The tiny red heart shape image on the stamen of this azalea flower.
There must be a treasure trove of bugs for these Red-bellied Woodpeckers somewhere close. They're returning about every 10 minutes to feed the little ones.
Named for the large red band and thread-like tails on the hind wing. Smaller than the diameter of my pinky finger, it landed on a leaf and was rubbing its wings together, like I rub my hands together.
I have not seen many Red-tailed Hawks this fall compared to other years. I came across this one at Willband Creek Park.
Red Wattlebird resting.....thanks to Wayne d for my Xmas gift, a book on Australian birds which means I can now identify them correctly....!!
Some people just look good all the time don't they! Even when they are a'bloody'sleep! I kick and talk, not so pretty here, hahahaha.
Anyway, this is a candid shot from the same back yard festival. Rosie, as you guys have seen in several of my other shots, (the two from Dartmoor), is rather photogenic. I love her hair! x

as much as I appreciate 'fantastic portrait' thingys, please no copy and paste stamps.
I'm not sure what captured this hawk's attention but it stayed put allowing me to take several good shots of it. Usually red-tailed hawks are very skittish with me.
No estoy seguro de lo que captaba la atención de este gavilán pero quedó muy quieto permitiendo que tomara unas fotos buenas de él. Usualmente, los gavilanes colirrojos son muy asustadizos cuando me acerco.
My favorite color is red, so the moment I saw this door I couldn't resist taking a photo .. what can I do ,, I really like everything in red :p
They are spreading color all around through those lovely soft antennas.
